Chapter 12
"Thakur ? ha ha ha Tha..ta ,Thakur !" Sugni was laughing so hard she was doubled over on the bed, tears running out of her eyes.
"Hey it's not THAT funny" Vickram said, he almost felt embarrassed.
"I am sorry I can't help it...I am having visions of fat men with handlebar mustaches wearing dhoties walking around with a cane!. Passing orders around to their royal subjects!!" Again she double over laughing.
"I think you are mixing up thakurs with kings,"
"Same thing naa...both have people at their beck and call, both of them have egos the size of football feilds , both feel they own the world...Am I right Thakur Malick?" She asked giving him a mock bow.
It was a Sunday and the diner was closed, Sugni was doing her laundry offering to do his, while turning out his pockets his wallet fell out. Curiousity took over and she decided to see as she put him "made him who he was". Suddenly she burst out laughing when she caught sight of his Id Card that declared his legal name to be Thakur Vickram Singh!
"Ha..ha.. very funny" he said... he couln't help but smile at her childishness.
"It's true!" she said seriously, nodding her head matter of factly.
"Fine! then here is an order for you , madam," Vickram said
"Ohhh?"
"Hmmm hmmm...come here'
"Why?"
"Cause I said so! come here" He said again, with a mock glare making a come hither motion with his index finger.
Scooting around until she was sitting side by side with him .."Yes?.'
Wrapping his arms around her, he sighed ..."Much better" he watched as the most adorable blush covered her cheeks.
"Ummm where was I?" she asked ,finally relaxing in his arms , she turned back to investigate the rest of his wallet.
"hmmm, your drivers permit is about to expire" She announced
"hmmhmm" he mumbled closing his eyes resting his head against the head board of the bed, leaving her to her investigations.
"Whats' this?" she asked,
Opening his eyes he saw her indicating one of the plastic sleeves inside had an old coin, that he had in his possession since he was five years old. He smiled recalling the story
"When I turned five my dad gave it to me, told me it was a special coin, made just for me. I remember running around all day thinking I was the luckist boy on earth."
"where's you dad now?' she asked
"He passed away when I was 15" He said
"I'm sorry" she said
"A few years after I got it, I was having this argument with my big brother and I found out that he also got one of the special coins, so did my sister. I was mad thinking what's so special about it? I did'nt want it any more. My father saw me upset, he said ..."you know son, their is something special about that coin, but you won't see it until you are ready...you have to appreciate what you have not for face value but for what was behind it. You are all special to me, because you are all my kids and I love you the same." ...I did not really pay mind to what he said then...but later on after he passed on I found the coin laying around in my room. ..." Taking the coin out of the sleeve, he placed it in her hand..."As I really looked at it I found what made it special"
ON closer inspection , she saw that although it looked like a normal dollar coin on turning it onto the back she saw what made it special...in very tiny script instead of the declaration of currency there was "To Vickram, may God forever watch over you, love dad!."
"Wow...he sounded like a wonderful dad!' She said replacing the coin back into the compartment. She continued flipping through.
"Hmmm he was very special!" He smiled, recalling his child hood.
'What's this...Hmmm ? She asked. Removing a worn piece of paper , hidden behind the paper, an old photo also fell out onto her lap. She picked it up staring at the couple staring back at her. A photo that was taken on his wedding day; twelve years ago. Straightening out of his arms she stared at the photo then at him, silently asking for answers to the unasked questions swimming in her eyes.
Looking at the picture, he forgot was in there... and that letter he read so much he knew every word by heart. From his light- hearted child hood memories; he was confronted with his horrible past, the time had come he guessed'but he had no idea how he should start, he needed time to gather his thoughts and courage. Taking the wallet, letter and photo from her hands.
"I think the machine stopped" he said. Placing the contents back inside the wallet. Indicated her exploration was done.
Looking visibly hurt by his sudden off handedness.
She slowly got up collecting the small pile of laundry she walked towards the door, turning back to look at him she said
"You know, it's really hard to move forward if you can't let go of the past. What ever happened to you I know it had to be horrible for you to leave everything behind. I'm not going to ask what happened but , it would be nice if you trusted me to a little, like I trusted you." With that she left. Leaving him staring after her.
He know this day would come, when he would have to tell her all about his past. She was right she trusted him with her problems, her heart. He owed her this much. But now that the time had come he felt scared. He was scared of her reaction, afraid of seeing that look of disappointment, disgust or horror in her eyes.
He just began living again. He also knew that keeping this truth form her was not a possibility. He could not be that unfair to her. He loved her , and he should trust in that love and in her. Fate had never been kind to him , but even fate had to give up sometime . Do or die Vickram, the time time had come. Taking a deep breath for courage, he removed the photo and the letter, he made his way to the living room.
That is where she found him a little while later.. He was sitting in the sofa, evidence of his past in his hands.
"Sugni" he called as she entered the room.
"Come...have a seat." He said patting the cushion next to him. She did. Taking her hand , he placed the photo. Silently she stared at it then at him waitng.
"This picture was taken on my wedding day twelve years ago. That's Reva my ex-wife."
"She, shes very beautiful"
"Yeah, on the outside." He said ruefully.
"We got divorced a year ago, but the marriage was over long befor that..." He said
"But you still love her?" She asked
"No..what I felt for her was never really love, I know that now , it was more of a physical attraction thing and I stopped feeling that a long time ago," he said
" You still carry around old love letters." She was looking at the letter in his hand.
"NO..this letter...I received from my nephew Adi...two days after his funeral, one week after I killed him." He said. He did not have to look at her to see the look of shock on her face'
