"One can be a buffoon with a male anchor, not with a female anchor" - Rithvik Dhanjani

In conversation with the heartthrob of Indian television..

He is loved by not only his millions of fans; but also by his numerous friends in the telly world. He is none other than Rithvik Dhanjani.

The man who has proven his mark as an established host in reality shows; is all set to host the upcoming dance reality show, 'So You Think You Can Dance-Ab India Ki Baari' with actress,Mouni Roy.

In a vis-a-vis conversation, Rithvik tells us how is it hosting with Mouni, doing an array of reality shows and his comeback to acting in fiction...

You are already guns blazing in the comic front while Mouni seems to be the serious one in the hosting department. So do you think she would be having a tough time hosting it?
I am sure, anybody would have a tough time as she is hosting a show for the first time. I, myself had a very difficult period when I hosted my first show. I don't blame her for that at all, a bit more time and she will be amazing the way she already is. On sets, she is fantastic and is emerging as a beautiful host gradually! With a couple of shoots more, things will get much more eased up! And I am very happy that it is Mouni doing this, as I know her very well; she is a dear friend.
So Rithvik, how is this show different from the array of shows you have hosted so far?
This show in itself is very different to be totally honest. When it comes to hosting a dance reality show, the space is pretty much the same. However, the essence of every show I host is always very different. For eg- the last show I hosted was India's Best Dramebaaz' where the essence was kids as there is an innocence and honesty that they bring to the stage. Whereas, here things are totally different, because here, the dance prowess and technique you get to see on stage is what to carry the show forward. So, I think, this is totally different from all of that. And So You Think You Can Dance' is a show that all of us have grown up watching and loving the videos and performances. And now it has finally come to India. So, it is a great honour!
Do you think TV actors' dancing and other skills are underutilized when it comes to portraying them on the shows they work in?
Yes! Absolutely! In the story formats of our serials, there is very little scope of dancing and songs as there are highly montaged sequences! But, I think that has changed in the recent times, where there are storylines developing around dance, example Dil Dosti Dance'.
How different is it working with a female co-anchor rather than a male co-anchor?
Oh, its totally different! The past two shows I have done are with male anchors! And with male anchors, its totally different as you can be the buffoons and the monkey that you are. But, with a female anchor, you cannot be that, and if you become that, you are the only one who is that! With a female anchor, it's a different dynamic and it demands you to keep the energy levels high!
Rithvik, you have been off the fiction space for a long time now? Do you see a good show happening anytime soon or is it a conscious effort to stay off it?
No, it isn't a conscious effort at all. I think if there is a fantastic script which comes knocking at my door, I will be more than happy to work on it. I have been getting several offers till now, where some of them I thought of giving a pass and some I really wanted to work on, but some things didn't materialize! I am hoping things get better soon.

Well, we hope so too!

Rithvik Dhanjani on anchoring reality shows, his B-town debut and more

Rithvik Dhanjani is certainly not someone who minces his words when he has to voice his opinions.

He admits that while he loves dancing, he equally enjoys hosting a dance show. Rithvik returns on TV with another anchoring stint in 'So You Think You Can Dance - Ab India Ki Baari'. Excerpts from a chat:

Why have you only stuck to anchoring reality shows lately?

I enjoy anchoring reality shows. Plus, I haven't come across any scripts which challenge me as an actor. Also I've been always clear that I wouldn't do TV soaps just for the sake of doing them. I would rather wait and work on projects which enable me to make an impact.

Having won a dance reality show, how are you planning to help the participants in this dance show?

One of the major things in any dance based reality show is how smartly you can impress the audience and keep your cool throughout the show. As an anchor, I will guide participants on how to be more camera friendly and create a rapport with the audience and judges.

What kind of reality shows would you never do?

'Bigg Boss' is one show that I can never be a part of. I am very restless as a person, so keeping me locked won't be a good idea.

Do you think prime time soaps on Hindi GECs are getting regressive by the day?

Whether the shows are regressive or not doesn't matter. We have to accept the fact that these shows, irrespective of their content, are gaining popularity, so the audience is obviously liking the content.

A lot of your contemporaries are now doing web series and on celluloid. Any plans to take that route?

I will be making a formal announcement about my Bollywood debut very soon. As for doing a web show, I have a few projects lined up which will soon release online. I believe that a web series allows actors the freedom to express their views. Besides the web-episodes also have a huge viewership, which is a positive thing for us.
