Shuddh Desi Romance (3 Days) First Weekend Collection At Box Office Posted by: Shekhar Updated: Monday, September 9, 2013, 21:26 [IST]

Among two new Hindi releases, Shuddh Desi Romance has turned out to be the biggest winner at the Indian Box Office race in the first weekend. The Sushant Singh Rajput and Parineeti Chopra starrer has done superb collection in three days and topped the domestic business chart, beating its rival Zanjeer starring South Indian Superstar Ram Charan Teja and Priyanka Chopra in the leads. Shuddh Desi Romance, which was one of the most-hyped and highly-promoted films from YRF, released with a limited screen count (1,050) on September 6. The movie opened to an average response in the morning shows on Friday, but it went from strength to strength in the later shows. The film did record breaking collection at the Indian Box Office on first day, becoming the biggest opener for Sushant and Parineeti. SDR 3 Days Collection At Box Office The business of Shuddh Desi Romance went up by 20% on Saturday and it continued to climb the ladder of success on Sunday. The Sushant Singh Rajput and Parineeti Chopra starrer has collected Rs 23.27 crores nett at the Indian Box Office in the first weekend. Its breakup is Rs 6.45 cr on Fri, Rs 7.90 cr on Sat and Rs 8.92 cr on Sun. Trade analysts feel that it is a fantastic business for a film with less known stars. Shuddh Desi Romance is a youth-centric movie. It was rejected out-right by the film critics for its mindless content and performances. But the flick was successful in impressing the film goers, who spread a positive word of mouth, making it a grand success. It should be mentioned here that the maximum portion of its viewers were aged between 20 and 25 years.

Not As Brave As His Film:

Sushant Singh Rajput, who stars in Shuddh Desi Romance, was reportedly miffed at mediapersons earlier this week when they quizzed him about his relationship with girlfriend (and television actress) Ankita Lokhande. While promoting the movie, in which his character Raghu is in a live-in relationship with Parineeti Chopra's Gayatri, journos asked Sushant about the parallels between reel and real life, given that Ankita and he have been living together for some years now. The actor muttered an unconvincing response, then quickly asked a publicist to intervene and ensure that similar questions didn't come up again in subsequent interviews.

Leading up to the film's release and as part of a promotional strategy to push the movie, Sushant and Parineeti have been talking about changing attitudes towards pre-marital sex and relationships in India, but Sushant in particular seemed uncomfortable when the queries became more personal. In fact, in some interviews, he clarified that Ankita and he were planning to wed in the year ahead. Chicken!

It's probably not really Masand, it is more likely Somen Mishra (aka @cilemasnob on twitter), who works under Masand on the same channel. His tweets from his personal account:

somen mishra @somenm

So I met these three actors who have done a film that tackles changing relationship scenario - love, sex and all that. But when I asked +

+them 2 pick yes or no 4 pre-marital sex,live in relationship,same sex marriage n such,they r so scared 2 endorse. How do I buy the film thn

Interestingly the lead actor is in a live-in relationship in real life too n that's cool. So why be shy. Sm1 shld tell the kids how 2 talk.

Funniest part is d makers hv bn promoting the film with their research stats on such subjects. Such irony. Arre get ur actors on d same page

---

I like how in this piece Sushant became "miffed", when really he just doesn't answer those questions that make him uncomfortable. I think it takes courage to say you are in a live-in relationship, while others are single until married. Some journalists have issues with everything.

Unless something very good comes out between now and December, "Shuddh Desi Romance" will be the best romantic comedy made anywhere in the world for 2013. It's another fine entry in director Maneesh Sharma's resume, following the splendid "Band Baaja Baraat" and "Ladies vs. Ricky Bahl." Jaideep Sahni's script is sharp and the whole cast is splendid. The film plays with romantic comedy genre elements in an interesting way, but first and foremost is concerned with being romantic and being funny, and succeeds nearly perfectly on both counts.

Protagonist Raghu (Sushant Singh Rajput) is a young man in Jaipur who makes extra cash working for a wedding planner (Rishi Kapoor) as a hired wedding guest, so"for instance"a groom who needs a few more reasonably presentable friends and/or family members would engage his services. The story opens with Raghu himself about to get married, to a woman he barely knows (Vaani Kapoor). On the way to the wedding, he meets and falls head over heels for Gayatri (Parineeti Chopra), another hired guest. Then, right in the middle of the wedding ceremony itself, Raghu panics and runs away.

From that starting point, though, the story consistently resists the predictable choice. The three leads are all superb, with Sushant Singh Rajput managing to make a potentially difficult character, with all his indecision and passivity, sympathetic: the movie hinges on the audience wanting Raghu to eventually grow up and find true love. Here, it helps that the movie doesn't ask us to sympathize too much with Raghu; it's made blatantly clear that he does indeed need to grow up. Rajput's charm as an actor"it's amazing that this is only his second film; he was equally good in "Kai Po Che!" earlier this year"keeps Raghu from ever wearing the audience's patience too thin. Rajput, barring any unforeseen obstacles, should be a major star in years to come.

Even more impressive, though, are the two female leads, both of whom have more agency as characters than one usually sees in modern romantic comedy, and both terrifically played by the respective actresses. Gayatri is the more overtly "modern" of the two, at first: she's assertive and sexually independent, but still haunted by a past that's seen its share of pain. Parineeti Chopra shines in the role, playing it with an elegant ease that defies her relative youth. Even more impressively, Vaani Kapoor does the same as Tara, the jilted bride. Her reappearance in Raghu's life comes at a point whose particulars shouldn't be spoiled, as they're both inevitable and surprising somehow, much like the movie as a whole. Rather than wither away in shame after her ill-fated wedding, Tara takes control of both her life and, ultimately, the narrative of the film. The 21-year-old Kapoor, in her debut, has the poise of a veteran and the charisma and talent to become one.

An elder (unrelated) Kapoor, Rishi, does his best work in years as the wedding planner, who in spite of the potentially cynical nature of the work he does, still has a rather sweetly old-fashioned romanticized belief in the power of marriage. That the movie still portrays him fondly despite being a bit more skeptical about matrimony and all its trappings is the key to its balance: there's no meanness to "Shuddh Desi Romance," though there is a sharp intelligence to it.

If there's any quibble to be had with the film, it's that the pace flags slightly in places. That it does, though, is more due to Maneesh Sharma's direction trusting that the audience will find genuine moments between people compelling. There are certainly enough of those moments to make "Shuddh Desi Romance" not only engaging, but delightful. The songs are terrific, blending local folk music with modern pop, and choreographed smartly.

The best part about "Shuddh Desi Romance" is that it's not reinventing the wheel. It's merely a testament to how much fun a romantic comedy can be by simply hitting all the right notes and letting the characters drive the story rather than perceived obligation to genre fidelity. "Shuddh Desi Romance" is an immensely satisfying night at the movies, and, until further notice, the year's standard bearer for romantic comedy.

Happy for Sushant! He deserves all the success. 👏

Masand's gossip is just that. Gossip. He writes stuff based on hearsay with very little truth and tries to malign some actors. He does that with Shahid a lot too. 😡 If Sushant was tired of answering same questions again and again, I don't blame him. Parineeti is already pissed off that Ankita is stealing her thunder. 😆 Its only right that Sushant doesn't want to make her more uncomfortable. He wasn't avoiding questions about Ankita he just didn't feel like answering them 1000th time. Why don't the reporters take his answers about his relationship from other reporters who already asked him about it? 😆
