Chapter 18 - Tum Ho - Part I [Karan, Laurie, Purvi, Arjun]
Bollywood Boudoir - London - (Week 4) Sunday - 1:30 am. GMT
Purvi was still trying to get a hold of herself when the door bell rang. She had felt a little off and wanted to take a few minutes to compose herself before she went back up to the party to meet Karan and their respective clients. She looked at the timer in the kitchen and realized that she had been standing in the same position for almost thirty minutes.
'Oh my god, K.D. is going to be furious with me! I need to get back up to the party' Purvi scolded herself as she quickly got a paper towel, ran it under some cold water and quickly pressed it against her face and neck. The sensation perked her up somewhat.
The door bell rang again startling Purvi. She quickly got rid of the wet towel, regained her composure and went to answer the door. She opened it to find Laurie standing there with a concerned expression on her face.
"Is everything ok? I came back from dropping off Tej at your sister's and Karan said you had been in your flat since we left. Are you alright?"
"I'm fine... I think. My head feels a little fuzzy but I'm very happy" Purvi said with a huge grin on her face.
"You just might have a buzz, little Purvi. What did you have to drink? Wine? Champagne?" Laurie folded her arms across her chest.
"Nope. None of the above - just juice and ginger ale." Purvi put her hands behind her back and swayed from side to side like a little girl.
'Uh-oh' Laurie thought as she carefully considered Purvi.
"Can you make it back upstairs? And more importantly, are you able to help Karan with this pitch?"
"Yes, I can do it."
"Alrighty, then. Let's go"
Laurie linked her arm with Purvi's as she rightly guessed that Purvi was indeed a little tipsy and needed some assistance getting upstairs. The two carefully made their way out of Purvi's flat and back up to the party.
Arjun was irritated and in need some air. 'This party is never ending! Don't these people want to go home?'
He excused himself from Karan and the group of clients and went out on to the veranda to clear his mind. He just needed to get Karan alone for a few minutes to question him about Purvi and to find out when she was coming to London so he could prepare for his flower.
'My flower' he thought as a handsome smile crossed his face. He guessed that he would forever be in amazement of the effect she had on him.
Just one smile from her could turn his entire world upside down and make him an utterly flabbergasted fool. He chuckled at that thought. What a complete turnabout! This slip of a girl had transformed him from a no nonsense, workaholic, khadoos boss to a sentimental, impassioned, besotted lover.
He was attracted to the enigma that she was - a bleeding heart encompassed by a fiery spirit. They were like magnets and the pull between them was unavoidable. He was the Majnun to her Laila.
In the cool of the milky twilight, Arjun felt uncomfortably warm. He took off his jacket and set it on the little bench next to him and rolled up the sleeves of his shirt to his elbows. He stuck his hands in his pockets, looked out on the water and felt a kinship to the majestic Tower Bridge that dominated his view.
'Strong and solitary. Yup, that's what we are.'
Purvi and Laurie had made their way back to Karan just as one of the men left the group to go out onto the veranda.
Purvi seemed to be in better control of her faculties when the discussion started and she propped herself against a chair for support. She also carefully enunciated her words to make sure she got them just right. For all appearances, she was perfect. Laurie stood off to the side to watch the show.
'She's quite a resourceful girl. She pulled through in a clutch situation. Very much like her brother' Laurie mused proudly as she observed the duo weaving their magic over the unsuspecting clients.
They worked in flawless tandem as they supported each other throughout the entire presentation. He was offense and she was defense and the two of them covered the entire field effortlessly.
'They look as though they've been doing this together for years' Laurie teared up as she thought about the last couple months and what Karan had been through trying to find Purvi. 'Get a grip girl. You know he has a homing beacon on your tears.'
As soon as the thought crossed her mind, Karan looked over to her mid sentence, met her eyes and a slight frown appeared on his face. Laurie smiled at him and dipped her head slightly to let him know she was alright.
With Purvi following his lead, Karan swiftly made his proposal and within a few minutes Karma Industries had received the verbal agreement from the new clients with a follow up appointment on Monday to seal the deal.
'What a performance' Laurie gave them a mental round of applause and went over to congratulate them as the clients meandered away to get some refreshments. Karan waited until they were a respectable distance away before he high-fived Purvi for a job well done.
Purvi surprised them both by pulling him into a quick hug. Karan's eyes shot up in shock and he looked over to Laurie who was teary eyed all over again.
Purvi pulled away and laughed nervously. "S-sorry, I just got a little excited. This was my first experience cracking a deal like this. What a rush!" Purvi glanced at Laurie who was smiling at both of them.
"Yes" Karan agreed "We make a great team, P.D." He turned to Laurie "She's quite the package, isn't she?"
"Yes, just like her br..." Karan cleared his throat. "Ahem, I mean just like her boss" Laurie caught herself before she blurted out Karan's secret. A relieved Karan exhaled a quick breath.
"Where did you learn those effective negotiating skills Purvi?" Karan asked casually.
"From Arjun" was Purvi's immediate reply. Her eyes went wide and her cheeks flushed neon red with embarrassment. "I-I mean, from Mr. Kirloskar, my previous employer." She looked down at her feet.
Laurie caught Karan's eye and he smiled at her in acknowledgement. Karan looked around the room for the person in question but didn't see him.
'He's been following me around all night like a lost puppy. I know he was waiting for me so he couldn't have left yet, could he? I wonder where he headed off to?' Karan mused.
"I'll be right back" Karan excused himself and went off to look for Arjun. Laurie stayed with Purvi and flagged down a waiter with some snacks so Purvi could get something in her stomach.
Arjun's phone buzzed with an incoming email and he was pulled out of his reverie. He took out his phone to check the message and was shocked that so much time had passed. He had been out here for at least thirty minutes.
He breathed a sigh of relief as the party was still going strong for he knew that Karan would not leave the venue until the last watered and fatted guest had been ushered out the door.
Arjun picked up his jacket from the bench and something fell to the floor. He bent down to retrieve it. Someone had forgotten their phone outside.
He picked it up and was about to take it inside when his finger hit the display button.
His heart skipped a beat and then a few more as he looked down at the phone's display. It wasn't the brightness of the screen that caused his panic but rather the words splayed across the screen.
Do Not Disturb!
Arjun stood rooted to the spot he was standing in and whispered disbelievingly into the night. "Purvi?"
"Yes?" Purvi turned around to answer the person that called out to her.
"Hmm?" Laurie looked up at her questioningly.
"I thought I heard someone call me? Strange" Purvi was still feeling the effects of whatever is was she consumed but now she was a little sturdier thanks to the hors d'oeuvres she scarfed down just a few minutes ago.
"Oh my gosh! Sweetie, I'm so sorry I forgot. Tej asked me to have you ring her up when you had a few minutes to see when you wanted to meet up tomorrow."
Purvi's smile faltered a bit but she kept up appearances. "That's ok, it's fine. I'll call her now. She should still be up I think." She reached for her phone but found it missing. "Where's my phone?" She checked again.
"Did you leave it in your flat?"
"No, I had it when Tej went to talk to Ovi on the veranda and I put it next to me on the bench before you guys came in and.." Purvi gently slapped a hand to her head. "I left it on the bench on the veranda."
"Do you want me to go get it for you?"
"No, I'll go. I need to get some fresh air anyway."
"Ok, I'll be right here when you get back."
Purvi waded through the still boisterous crowd and made her way out to the veranda. The flaps had been closed down for noise control and she welcomed the reprieve from the pulsating beats of the lively music.
She closed her eyes as her head swam again. She grabbed on to the railing and took in a few deep breaths to revive herself. She stood there for a few minutes until Karan's perfume drifted over to her from around the little corner.
'Gotcha!' Purvi smiled mischievously as she decided to scare Karan out of his wits. 'Come out here to hide, had he?'
She slowly eased up the little walkway and peaked around the corner.
She could not believe her eyes.
She blinked.
And blinked.
And blinked again.
'No! It couldn't be...could it?'
There, next to the little bench, in a captivating blood red shirt that matched her saree blouse, holding her phone, stood... 'Arjun?'
She shook her head to clear her vision but his image never waved. She pinched herself to make sure she was awake but still didn't believe it.
Her head felt fuzzier and she thought, 'This must be another dream. There's no way Arjun would ever be here. Here of all places? And holding my phone? This isn't real This can't be real. I must be dreaming!'
How she missed him! She relished the hard outline of his handsome face and felt her knees buckle a little. Her gaze hungrily raked all over from his tense shoulders, perfectly outlined by this obviously tailored shirt, all the way down to his shoes.
He was lost in thought as she debated, 'Well if it's just a dream, why can't I have a little fun?'
Purvi's pulse raced as adrenaline shot through her system. 'No reservations this time!'
She gathered her wits about her, fluffed her hair, stepped out from around the corner and stood in the middle of the walkway with a hand on her hip.
Her eyes took on a wicked gleam as she said in a sultry voice, "Have you been waiting long, Mr. Kirloskar?"
Chapter 18 - Tum Ho - Part II [Karan, Laurie, Purvi, Arjun]
Bollywood Boudoir - London - (Week 4) Sunday - 2:00 am. GMT
Arjun heard the voice of an angel and froze. 'Am I hearing things?'
"Ahem. Earth to Arjun! Arjun, are you there?"
'It can't be her, can it?' Arjun spun around lightning fast with the phone still firmly grasped in his hand and when he saw her he swore all time had stopped.
Standing there, nonchalantly, in front of him was the woman of his dreams.
The woman that consumed his days and nights.
The woman he had been pining for.
The woman that owned his soul.
'Purvi?' her name dripped from his lips in reverence and he thought he saw her shudder upon hearing it.
The heart that was calm as the Thames River a few minutes ago started pulsing at record breaking speeds as his brain registered that she was right in front of him.
His flower! His Purvi!
She was like a beacon of light shining through the darkness and Arjun was helpless to the pull of her beauty. His eyes greedily drank in the sight of her like a parched man who had his first drink of water after being stranded in the desert for days.
Her hair was unbound and hung in tempting waves around her face. She was radiant in a silver shimmer saree that hugged all the right places. Arjun's eyes traveled down to the blood red saree blouse that matched his shirt and his body lurched in response. 'Down boy!' he reprimanded himself.
His eyes continued their slow, deliberate inspection of her all the way down to her feet and then back up to her face. He noted that she had on some expensive jewelry and made a mental note to ask her about that later. Her make-up was subdued, just as he liked it, but her lips - they were a tantalizing shade of red that complimented her blouse.
He unconsciously licked his own lips and brought himself to look her directly in the eye.
Thunder clapped in the distance heralding the storm that was on its way but Arjun wasn't ready to go. He would never be ready to let her out of his sight.
In her glossy eyes, he saw everything he had been yearning for in the past few months.
He saw her attraction, her caring, her trust and, most importantly, her love for him.
In that moment, in her eyes, he saw the rest of his life with her.
'Mine!' he thoughtfully claimed to the universe.
While Arjun had been cataloguing her image for his Purvi files, Purvi had been doing the same thing with Arjun.
'These dreams just keep getting better and better' she told herself. Purvi could tell that Arjun had just gotten a haircut today and his face was clean shaven. He was standing with his legs slightly apart and his arms hung loosely at his sides. She spotted her phone in one hand while the other was curled up into a nervous fist.
He was mesmerizing in his form fitting blood red shirt, which Purvi had to admit, was quite a view! She could tell he was leaner and more muscular - he had obviously been working out since their last encounter. Her eyes roamed unabashedly and ravenously down his chest, his legs and back up to his face.
And what a face it was!
She wanted to reach out and run her finger tips across the strong, hard line of his jaw and when her gaze lingered for a few seconds on his mouth she felt a shiver run through her entire body.
That little mole just above his lips would be the death of her!
She finally brought herself to look into his eyes and all coherent thought slipped away.
Pure, raw and uninhibited emotion poured from depths of him. She could feel his desire, his concern, his possessiveness and his love for her crashing into her like tumultuous waves against the shore.
'Mine!' she too claimed silently to the universe and thunder clapped again as if in agreement.
'Where was I? Oh, yeah right...' Purvi cleared her throat.
"In the flesh. Were you expecting someone else?" she winked at him.
"N-no. Purvi?" He repeated not trusting his eyes, who were clearly playing tricks on him.
"Yes, it's me" Purvi smiled wickedly and turned about slowly to show off her saree. "See?"
Arjun wanted her to keep doing THAT forever too! 'Just wow'
"What do you think?"
"Beautiful!" came the instant, awed reply.
Purvi's spirit soared into the heavens. She had never felt so desired in all her life and it was a very heady feeling. She came closer to him as he continued to stare unmovingly at her.
He looked like a tiger ready to pounce if she made any sudden movements to escape. She wasn't going anywhere.
"Purvi, how are you here?"
"Simple, I work for Karma Industries."
"Purvi, I mean, how are you here?"
"You mean in London?
"Yes"
"I've been living and working here for the past three weeks or so"
"WHAT?"
"No need to shout. I'm standing right here."
"Y-you've been here in London?"
"Yeeesss. That's what I said. Are you ok?"
"I-I don't know."
"You need to loosen up a bit Arjun. You are way too tense." Purvi's brain started to get a little more hazy and as a side effect, she was becoming more brazen.
She cupped his face with her hand and little tremors shook them both.
Arjun's brain completely stopped working. He stuck her phone in his pocket and reached up to take her hand that was resting on his face.
Purvi relished the feel of his strong, determined hand on hers. Her smile widened at his touch and he exhaled as if he has been holding his breath.
"All I've thought about for the past few months is seeing you in front of me."
Purvi's brows furrowed for a second. "Are you forgetting all our secret rendezvous?"
Arjun looked at her quizzically and was about to ask her what she meant when he blurted out. "I'm not engaged to Ovi anymore. I broke it off when I left India. We are not together."
"I know. I remember you told me."
"I told you? Where? When?"
"When we were on the beach silly. You told me 'There is no Ovi - only Purvi' Remember?"
'On the beach? What she talking abou...'
Thunder clapped again, this time so much closer to them. He went still as the wind picked up and blew some of her hair in his face. He brought his free hand up to touch her soft tresses and inhaled its intoxicating fragrance.
He closed his eyes for a second and the memory of that dream washed over him. 'She had the same dream? Was it real? It couldn't be! How could we both have the same dream? Impossible! I need to have my head examined'
"And then the other time we danced to your mum's favorite song in the rain. Remember that?"
'How did she..? How could she...? What on earth was going on?' Arjun could not comprehend what was happening but he didn't want to interrupt for fear that it WAS all just a dream.
Someone must have adjusted the flap on the marquee for soft music now filtered out into the night. Purvi stepped in a little closer to him.
"I know there's no Ovi here. It's just you and me and I love that. Do you know how much you mean to me, Arjun? I can't even begin to tell you how much you've filled my heart and made me feel complete. I am nothing without you." Her eyes glistened and a few hot tears rolled down her cheeks. He tenderly brushed them away with his thumb.
Tears burned Arjun's own eyes as she confessed her inner most feelings to him. "You the only one for me Purvi. You are my whole world and I am never letting you go." A single tear escape and rolled down his cheek.
She reached up and wiped his tear away too. "Look how sappy we've become." She gave a soft laugh. "Will you dance with me?"
"I will do anything for you Purvi"
He took her hand in his and spun her around before catching her again in a waltz pose. She threw her head back and laughed.
Arjun had never seen Purvi so happy and confident in herself. 'How did this transformation happen? When did it happen? Who was responsible for it?'
She caught his eye and lowered her gaze while she blushed prettily. Arjun forgot everything else but her.
'What is taking Purvi so long?' Laurie mused as she looked around. Guests were starting to leave and she was worried for Purvi in her condition. Laurie had a sudden fear that Purvi could have fallen over the railing and she rushed out on to the veranda.
As Laurie turned the corner, she came to an abrupt halt at the sight before her.
Purvi was in Arjun's arms tenderly swaying to the music!
Laurie could not believe her eyes. They both looked like two pieces that were made to fit each other. They were oblivious to the rest of the world as they only had eyes for each other. She had never seen this look of elation on either of their faces.
Laurie could feel the static electricity rolling off them in waves and it gave her goosebumps. It was like standing next to a powder keg and they were giving off some major sparks.
Laurie blushed and backed away. She went back inside and stood right at the opening of the marquee just as Karan came up to her.
"I couldn't find Arjun. It's the strangest thing. I swore he wanted to talk to me but he left without saying anything. I just don't get it - why would he just leave?"
Laurie shook her head and smiled. "He's on the veranda."
"Ah good, let's get this show on the road then." Karan looked around. "Where's P.D.?"
Laurie's smiled softened. "She's on the veranda too."
All the color drained from Karan's face.
"What?" He started towards the veranda when Laurie caught his arm.
"Easy Jani. She's fine. I just checked on her. Give them a few minutes will you?" Laurie's touch calmed Karan down greatly but he still looked agitated.
"She's a big girl sweetie."
Karan grunted his acquiesce yet kept his eyes trained on the flaps leading out to the veranda.
"It was such a lovely party but you haven't asked me to dance yet. I'm beginning to think that you're bored of me." Laurie batted her chocolatey brown eyes at Karan.
He promptly looked contrite and gave Laurie his full attention. "My dear, that will never happen in this lifetime or the next six lifetimes."
Karan held out his hand and Laurie slipped her hand in his. Karan held her close as they swayed to the music. The current song came to an end and the D.J. said, "The last song is dedicated to all the true loves here tonight. Enjoy"
Mohit Chauhan's sultry voice filled the speakers as Laurie closed her eyes and laid her head on Karan's shoulder.
Outside, Purvi and Arjun had never stopped moving. The temperature had dipped and the wind had slightly picked up but neither of them noticed. They were lost in their own world.
Tum ho {You Are}
As the song started, Arjun had pulled Purvi in so close that their breath was hot on each other's faces.
Tum ho, paas mere {You are, near me}
Saath mere, ho tum yoon {With me, you are}
Jitna mehsoos karoon tumko {So much I feel you}
Utna hi paa bhi loon {As much I get you too}
He held one of her hands in his own and put her free hand around his neck to bring her closer to him.
Their bodies just naturally flowed together as if they had done this in many lifetimes before.
Tum ho, mere liye {You are, for me}
Mere liye, ho tum yoon {For me, in such a way you are}
Khud ko main haar gaya tum ko {that I lost myself to you}
Tumko main jeeta hoon {and I have won you too}
His free hand had found its home at the base of her bare back and they both shivered at the contact of skin on skin.
Lightning flashed and the thunder railed again but this time, they were oblivious to the raging storm around them.
Tum ho {You Are}
The wind swirled around them as their fused bodies swayed ever so slowly to the music.
It tried to distract them with its cool prodding fingers but the couple refused to be interrupted.
Kahin se kahin ko bhi {From anywhere to anywhere}
Aao bewajah chalen {Let's go for no reason}
Poochhe bina kisi se {Without asking anyone}
Hum milen {We should meet}
Bandishen na rahi koi baaki tum ho {There are no barriers remaining because you are}
Tum ho, paas mere {You are, near me}
Saath mere, ho tum yoon {With me, you are}
Jitna mehsoos karoon tumko {So much I feel you}
Utna hi paa bhi loon {As much I get you too}
His thumb unconsciously made slow circles where it rested on her bare back and he was unaware of how hypnotizing this little action was to her.
Her skin warmed deliciously under his ministrations and heat crept up her cheeks.
Touching her skin and being in this close proximity to her was wreaking havoc on his self control but he wasn't about to let her go.
Kis tarah, chheenega {How the world will snatch}
Mujhse ye jahaan tumhe {You away from me}
Tum bhi ho hai {Now you are there}
Kya fikar ab humein {What worry do I have?}
Never breaking contact with her hand, he held her aloft, spun her around and brought her right back up against him.
Their eyes locked and they were again lost their own world.
Purvi then sighed, laid one hand on Arjun's chest over his heart and wrapped her free arm around his waist.
She placed her head in the crook of his neck and Arjun's eyes slid closed to relish the feel of his beloved in his arms.
They continued to sway ever so slowly to the music.
Tum ho mere liye {You are, for me}
Mere liye, ho tum yoon {for me, in such a way you are}
Khud ko main haar gaya tum ko {that I lost myself to you}
Tumko main jeeta hoon {and I have won you too}
He brushed a warm kiss at the top of her head and wrapped both arms around her.
'You were made for me. This is where I belong.' they both thought simultaneously.
Tum Ho... {You are}
The song ended and they stood still holding on to each other for a few minutes not wanting to let go.
"Purvi? Sweetie, it's time to go."
Purvi felt Arjun tense at the sound of someone's voice and he lifted his head to see who the visitor was. The voice was familiar to Purvi but she couldn't place it just yet.
Arjun cleared his throat and dropped one arm but still kept Purvi firmly in place with the other.
"Purvi?" the voice called again after another minute.
Purvi, with her arm still secured around Arjun's waist, raised her head to see Laurie standing at the corner waiting for her.
'Strange' Purvi thought 'Laurie has never been in my dreams before. That's new'
"The party is over and the guests are leaving"
'THE PARTY?' Arjun felt Purvi stiffen in his arms. Her eyes went wide with shock as she stared up at his with disbelief.
"What's going on Purvi?" Arjun was becoming alarmed by the fright in Purvi's eyes as she was looking at him.
"Y-y-you?"
"H-h-here?"
"Really here?"
"Oh my god!"
"Really here?!?"
Purvi disentangled herself from Arjun and stepped back. She put her hands up to her mouth as if she couldn't believe what she had just done.
Arjun was confused and her actions were beginning to scare him. "Purvi?" He reached out for her but she backed away and ran off towards the entrance.
The thunder bellowed and lighting cackled across the sky as if mocking him.
Arjun started after her but Laurie stopped him. "What happened to Purvi?" Laurie asked in a stern voice.
"I-I don't know." Arjun said quickly wanting to run after Purvi. "I have to go. I have to find her and talk to her." Arjun tried to brush past Laurie but she held him back with the authority in her voice.
"It's pretty late for that tonight. You can speak to her tomorrow."
Purvi ran inside the marquee, through the now empty room and almost made it to the entrance when she crashed into Karan.
Tears were streaming down her cheeks and he was on instant alert.
"P.D.? What's going on? What happened?"
Purvi started hiccupping and babbling hysterically as she was trying to get the story out. Karan could only make out the words Arjun, love, dream, Ovi and betrayed.
His anger piqued as he started to storm out to the veranda. He had only taken a few steps when Purvi called out to him. He turned around to see Purvi grab her head and teeter precariously. The drug in her system had finally caught up with her.
Karan took a few swift strides back to her and caught her just as she passed out. He lifted Purvi in his arms and was just about to take her down to her flat when Arjun came barreling into the marquee with Laurie in tow.
Arjun skidded to a halt and saw Purvi carefully ensconced in Karan's arms. Arjun's face darkened into a deadly menace as did Karan's.
Both looks said, 'I'm going to kill him'
Laurie sent up a silent prayer that there would be no bloodshed tonight.
Karan gave a curt nod to Laurie, who left Arjun's side and came over to him. Two men appeared out of thin air and flanked Karan's sides. One of them was the man standing in front of flat 502.
Laurie turned and made her way to the elevator. Karan gave Arjun another heated look that said, 'I will deal with you later' and followed her with Purvi still cradled in his arms.
Arjun's blood boiled as he saw Purvi in Karan's arms.
'How dare he touch her? Mine!' His primitive protective side came out as he tried to run after Karan.
"Purvi" he shouted.
The two guards blocked his path but didn't say a word. Arjun struggled to get past them but they just held him until he conceded. They stood firmly in his way still not saying a word. He knew they wouldn't hurt him but they weren't letting him follow Karan at the moment.
He pushed off them and ran his hands through his hair. His brain finally kicked in. 'I know where Karan lives. Once I get out of here, I won't spare him'
Arjun clenched his fist in anticipation.
