Chapter29 Silly games of love

Finally Mini and Arya were settled in Newyork. At first it was difficult for them to adjust in new surroundings in altogether new country but they become habituated to it. Arya was recovering fast, everyday brought new hope for her as she heard from Mickey how Neil and Mini spent their day at work and what did Mickey did to bring them close. Nothing was working as such but still both Arya and Mickey had hope that soon the ice of misunderstandings between them will melt and make way for warmth of their love.

On the other hand everyday brought new challenge for Mini. She was struggling to avoid Neil as much as possible. She used to leave her home with a resolution that she will not interact or cross path with Neil until its very important but somehow she was ending up seeing him, working around him most of her time. Sometimes she doubted Mickey was setting all this up but she had no proof to establish this fact. So she was giving benefit of doubt to Mickey.

Much to her surprise, Mini had really started liking her work as PR person. At first she used to be so confused and perplexed but she slowly started easing in the new role once she established rapport with the whole team and personnels.

The gossip about her being a ‘new girl’ in rockstar Neil’s life was still doing rounds in the tabloids and internet but nothing as such happened after that to fuel the fire of this gossip. Till now Mini had gained the knowledge of how everything works regarding the music band and she was nervous as finally her efficiency as PR would be put to test as band was coming with its latest album and live performances. Publicity campaign was to be launched for the same. Mini had done her best but still was praying to God so that everything will go fine. As a part of campaign band was to make special appearance in few public places and media was invited to give full coverage to it.

Neil was finding it difficult to maintain straight face in front of Mini. He was either angry or frustrated whenever she was in close vicinity. And then there was those awkward moments when they would be alone for some odd reasons, Neil doubted it was all staged by Mickey but every time he asked from Mickey he just made fun of Neil for being such a coward who was afraid to face his ex alone. On one hand Neil was confused how to feel, what to feel when he was with Mini but on other hand he waited for those awkward moments because that was the only time he could be near her. Even though he fight with her, taunt her in that time but it was “their” time and he hated to accept the fact that he actually longed to have those moments with her.

Music band was at the press conference when after few questions regarding the music album media started to fish out new gossip or reestablish the old one.

“We have heard you got new your longtime friend to take responsibility of the PR. Who is this girl? Is there any connection between Neil and her? Why he came back to take her out of the airport? Did he become chivalrous overnight?” one of the media asked and others laughed at his questions.

Mickey didn’t know for few seconds what to answer. Neil was about to grab the mike to answer in his own way and shut them up, which media also wanted to start new controversy but Mini interfered to handle the situation.

“I think the questions are about me then I should be answering that. Yes, its me, Mini Singh working as their PR. I am from India as well and some of the band members knew me personally so yes there is a connection, a connection which friends share with each other nothing else. You wont get any words for your headlines, sorry.” Mini answered smartly and some nodded in appreciation while few even laughed for politically correct answer.

“And about Neil being chivalrous overnight, I would like to say; didn’t you all want him to be a good boy? Now don’t tell me that you like him for his short temper and cocky answers and not his talent because if that’s the case then you all have really bad taste.” Mini added and now almost all of them clapped for her smart mouth and ability to handle difficult situations.

But media being the media couldn’t rest until they poke someone to bleed. So going for their favourite question to irk rockstar Neil Oberoi, one person just caught the opportunity to ask last question, “Ms. Mini, if you are their old friend you must know about the girl in Neil’s life and whose name he hides in his tattoo?”

Mickey closed his eyes in defeat as now no one could stop Neil from breaking one or two items here and cussing the reporter. Mini was shocked for a moment as she didn’t expect a question about her past that too related to one of their most fond memory. For few seconds she couldn’t respond as she was processing the question. Firstly it scratched her wounds. Secondly, she understood that Neil still had that tattoo and thirdly, it was a raw nerve for Neil too that’s why the reporter had asked this question.

Neil clenched his fist then banged it on the table and was about to stand up to answer back when Mini held his wrist. He tried to free it from her hold but she didn’t let go. He turned to look at her. His nostrils flared in anger, he looked like a tiger that can attack anytime. But Mini was no less than a ring master.

“Sit down” She whispered.

Neil narrowed his eyes in warning. As always this questions stung in his heart because it reminded him of his stupidity, his blind trust and love which he placed in Mini and she broke it mercilessly. But right now it made his heart bleed because the reason behind his pain was sitting beside her and the question posed a risk of showing his vulnerability to that same girl. It was the last thing he wanted. So he grunted and released his hand from her hold.

Mini was also determined to not accept defeat. “Sit down, I said, Neil Oberoi. Don’t ruin this. Let me handle.” She said sternly with such confidence that Neil had to agree.

“ I don’t know if he loved any girl in the past or not. But even if I knew I wouldn’t have shared the personal detail because unlike you sir, I am here to focus on their professional details. And I request you to be sincere to your profession also and don’t lose dignity.” Mini answered back and there was a silence in the room as nobody else wanted a lecture from her on morals. They understood, this new girl is really good in her job.

“Mini, that was awesome yaar. Tumne to band baja di press conference mein sabki. Pehli bar bechare koi controversy nahi bana paye.” Mickey praised and hi fived Mini.

“Mickey, sach kahu to pehle mujhe bilkul theek nahi lag raha tha ki tumne Mini ko ye job offer kiya after knowing their history, you know, but now I feel it was the best decision.” Jazz commented.

“Sach mein yaar! Kamaal kar diya tumne. Nahi to aaj phir Neil ke haath se koi maar khata and phir koi naya case.” Bobby shared his opinion.

Mini just smiled at them. She remembered those initial few days of her work when everyone including band members were skeptical about her because of the past she shared with Neil. Jazz had even commented that Mickey is making mistake but now everyone was praising her. Looks like she had made her place after all in this new setting.

Involuntarily Mini’s eyes searched through the room to find Neil. LIke everyone's praise was not enough and she wanted some sort of validation from him but he was nowhere to be seen. She immediately scolded herself for thinking about him and diverted her mind elsewhere.

When Mini was about to leave after a tiring day at work, she felt someone grabbed her from the waist and pushed her against the nearby wall.

“What do you think of yourself? Just because your witty answers impressed everyone don’t think that you can go on ordering me around.” Neil said with gritted teeth.

Mini tried to free her wrist from his hold but he was holding it too tightly. “Leave me you idiot. You are hurting me.”

“Oh really? Is it paining too much? More than the pain you caused me?” Neil taunted.

“Stop dragging the past in our present. If you think that you can discourage me, hurt me using our past then let me tell you very clearly, I had moved on long ago.Its you who is hanging on to it.” Mini also taunted him.

“Huh!In your dreams. I too had moved on long ago.” Neil was quick to answer back.

“Then why do you still have that tattoo? Why do you react so strongly when someone ask about it?” Mini hit the raw nerve again. first she protected him from getting hurt but this time she wanted to hurt him herself. For few moments, Neil was distracted by the question. He didn’t expect the direct attack from Mini. This gave Mini chance to free her wrist and have a last word.

“Grow up Neil. Keeping the tattoo of your ex and getting irritated on its mention….not cool or are you still that old emotional fool?.” Mini said and left after enjoying that defeated expressions on Neil’s face.

“A crew member was hovering over Neil to fix the mike; another was working on his hair as he was all set to make his entry on the stage for his performance.Other members were also getting ready. Mini was giving last minute instructions to the team. She was about to leave when she noticed a girl almost threw herself on Neil.

“Darling! Good to see you after a long time. Missed you baby.” The girl said and was about to kiss Neil when Mini interrupted.

“Ma’am, you are not allowed here. This is only for band members and personnels. Others are not allowed.” Mini politely asked the girl to leave.

“Others! Miss…whoever you are, I am not some commoner. My father has organized this event and I am very close to Neil….right Neil baby? Tell this girl, who am I and how closely we know each other.” Girl asked as she ran her finger on Neil’s jaw then to his neck.

Neil kept looking at the girl with blank expressions. He heard from her mouth that she is the daughter of producer of the event; apart from that he had no idea who she was. He didn’t even remember her name or seeing her anywhere. But, by her way of talking, he could guess that he might have spent some time with her when he was high. Anyways, he didn’t give a damn about her. He was already irritated by the way this girl was clinging to him. He was about to push her away when he noticed Mini was staring at them. Her eyes became narrow and her nostrils were flaring in anger meaning that she was really bothered and angry with this girl right now and what makes Mini angry, makes Neil happy.

Neil flirted back, “Ofcourse we know each other very closely, quite literally, how can I ever forget you. You are one hot babe.”

Mini was holding some papers in her hands and she had rolled them now wanting to tear them apart in anger listening Neil’s reply. She had heard a lot about his affairs and hook ups and she thought she was in a way prepared to see it in front of her eyes but when its finally happening, she felt like nothing could have prepared her for it. It was hurting and hurting a lot. She didn’t want to make fool of herself so she turned around to hide her expressions.

“You know what babe, here its too much crowded. Lets go in my vanity and spent some sexy time.” Neil said and pulled the girl with him in to his van.” He knew it was childish to act like that in front of Mini but he just wanted to answer back. He wanted to show that he has really moved on and Mini’s presence didn’t bother him.

Mini, on the other hand was close to tears now. Tears of jealousy, hatred and more of anger were threatening to fall anytime. She hated how she was feeling right now. To hell with Neil and that despo girl. Why the hell on earth its affecting her? Why she felt angry on that girl for flirting with Neil and why she wanted Neil to deny knowing that girl. Why it burnt somewhere in heart on seeing them going inside the vanity. Why she wanted to break the damn door of the van and drag that girl out?

Inside the vanity van the girl started clinging to Neil even more while he just had a smile on his face because he got to settle his score with Mini.

“Hey! What are you doing?” Neil asked from the girl when she tried to remove his jacket.

“Just doing that for which you have brought me here.” The girl gave sexy smile.

“Gosh! Stay away you despo. Don’t lay your hands on me….I feel pukish, give me some space.” Neil pushed her away.

“Huh! What do you mean?” The girl asked perplexed.

“Cut the crap. I don’t know you. Get out of here.” Neil said as he lit his cigarette.

“But we…you and me….we had a great time when…you don’t remember me?” Girl asked in confusion.

“For the last time, I don’t give a damn whoever you are. Get lost or else I’ll throw you out.” Neil warned and girl got upset. She finally left when feeling insulted.

For few minutes Neil too was surprised by his mood. Didnt he used to believe in use and throw girls specially such despo girls. On any other occasion he wouldn't have mind s casual sex. But since this girl came there was only one thing in his mind that is to make show off Mini. Nothing else came to his mind, even the idea of letting that girl come close to him seemed nauseating. What has changed lately, he wondered and the thought that it is because Mini has come back in his life was terrifying. He hated to think like that.

The girl marched towards the exit and bumped into Mini. “Don’t you have eyes?” The girl shouted back and marched forward without waiting for reply. Mini recognized she was the same girl who went with Neil. Jealousy for her and now anger on her attitude, Mini wanted to give befitting reply to that girl so she followed him.

She was about to call that girl when she heard her complaining to her friend.“Don’t know what this Neil thinks of himself. So much attitude.”

“What happened? You were happy when you went in. You were boasting about your hook up with him last summer and how you are gonna repeat that today.” Her friend asked.

“Don’t talk about that moron. He didn’t even remember me. First he took me inside like he really missed me and interested in me but once inside, he just insulted me.Cant believe he didn’t even know my name.” The girl answered and Mini who listened to all this couldn’t stop but laughed at them.

Why Mini laughed? Why she started feeling light all of a sudden? Why she felt the burn in her heart has eased a little? She dreaded to answer these questions.Part of her knew the answer but to acknowledge it was nothing less than a suicide. She was not weak and vulnerable to do that so she will pretend like nothing happened, she decided.

Neil came outside hoping his little game worked and now Mini will not mess with him atleast for today. Whatever has happened, Mini was also not in a mood to entertain those emotions again. It made her feel uneasy.

Band members were about to make an entry on the stage when Neil went to pick his guitar which was placed beside Mini. Neil bent down to pick it and suddenly Mini was startled with his sudden proximity. She dropped some papers which she was holding and hurriedly bent down to pick them up. Neil turned around to move away but then stopped in his tracks. He turned again in Mini’s direction and watched her. She was on the ground, collecting papers, her scarf had fallen on the ground, her hair were tied up in a bun and there just below where her hairline ended, there was his name, NEIL, in bold letters, written in stylish font….the tattoo.

Mini stood up and almost bumped into Neil. “What are you doing here? Go, your performance is about to start.” Mini said and turned to go away when Neil held her hand and pulled with jerk. Her shoulder bumped into his chest from back and she forgot to breathe for sometime. They were close more than her comfort level. She regained her composure somehow and tried to free herself.

“What are you doing Neil? Leave me.” She complained.

Neil removed her scarf which she has placed once again around her neck. Mini’s breath become heavy. She had no clue what Neil was doing, what is about to happen.

“Tattoo….you too have it till now. Now tell me, who is hanging on to the past?” Neil asked. Mini couldn’t miss the sarcastic tone as she finally figured out he has caught her.

“Its…its too expensive to get it removed. I don’t have all the money to waste over it.” Mini uttered nervously trying to sound convincing enough.

“Oh yeah! I forgot for a moment how much money is important to you. For few seconds I thought…may be…just may be…your feelings for me…were true…atleast for few seconds but….you know what…just forget it.

Both of them knew they were being silly. Playing little games just to prove their point but both of them couldnt help it also. They were and still are madly in love with each other but they dont want other to know it. None of them wants to admit that they are still waiting for the other to come and embrace them. Their separation has caused so much pain and hatred that they have forgotten to live peacefully.
