TV shows go the filmi way

Amrita Mulchandani, TNN | Jun 15, 2012, 12.00AM IST

Filmy titles and screenplay adaptations apart, there's something interesting cooking in the small screen as famous film scenes are finding many takers in shows to gain more TRPs.

Picture this. Lead couple Barun Sobti and Sanaya Irani have their intimate encounters in
Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon? which takes you back to an Aamir Khan and Madhuri Dixit scene in Dil. This is followed by a love scene similar to the one in Blackmail where Dharmendra and Rakhee hide in a box. In Parichay - Nayee Zindagi Kay Sapno Ka, Sameer Soni's wife Keerti Nagpure fights a court case for her husband just like Kareena Kapoor did in Aitraaz for Akshay Kumar; in Kya Huaa Tera Vaada Mona Singh sends her kids to stay with her husband's girlfriend Mouli Ganguly just like Karisma Kapoor did to Sushmita Sen in Biwi No 1.

In Main Lakshmi Tere Aangan Ki, Nisha Rawal who loves Sudeep Sahir tries to buy him from his wife (played Shraddha Arya) just like Urmila Matondkar in Judaai who offers money to Sridevi to sell her husband. The most common sequence seems to be from the film Babul where Amitabh Bachchan gets his widowed daughter-in-law Rani Mukerji remarried " Balika Vadhu - Kacchi Umar ke Pakke Rishte, Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha, Punar Vivah " Zindagi Milegi Dobara and Byaah Hamari Bahoo Ka, the lead girls' in-laws want to get them remarried. While in Madhubala " Ek Ishq Ek Junoon a Ganpati sequence is 'inspired' by Agneepath.

Showmakers stress that filmy tracks are just reference points and not replicated as it is. Director Sumeet Mittal o
f Punar Vivah and Main lakshmi Tere Aangan Ki says, "We do not copy films to make serials. Some film tracks are used to enhance the drama," says Sumeet.

Agrees Prashant Bhatt, fiction head of a GEC when he says, "Films are inspired from real life and we from them " it is just about how we identify the pulse of the audience. In a TV show, reel life is closer to real life. Recreating a film scene on a TV show is a calculated risk for us."

Some show makers feel filmi tracks should be incorporated in TV shows only if there is a need for them. Producer Sudhir Sharma of
Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha, says, "When Bollywood sequences are incorporated in TV shows they surely attract attention, but they should fit the story line. The cost of these sequences depends upon the nature of sequence. Popular Bollywood scenes have high recall value, but the 'inspired' scene should look authentic."

Actor Kratika Sengar says, "Whatever is shown in a TV show is a reflection of society. I feel great to be doing a show like (
Punar Vivah) because the concept of widow remarriage has a feel good factor about it, even if it is inspired by Babul."

Special episodes also have special budgets. A lot goes into it from real locations, extra cast, costumes, lights, etc. Approximately how much does the budget rise while shooting for such these episodes? "Budgets rise between 10% and 50%. It depends on the number of cast and extra props that we use for the special episode," says Prashant.

For the viewer the filmi 'inspiration' can only spice up the drama quotient in a prime time show, which in turn can whip up impressive TRPs, because nothing matters more than the right figures on the viewership charts!

Aitraaz was a good film and Siddhi -Kunal's court case has been a bit different.
