She watched the bustling streets from her vantage point, observing the mundane tasks that her neighbours carried out amidst the gossip they shared. Summer was officially here and that meant that all the ladies in the vicinity would assemble for the next few weeks, once a day usually after finishing all the chores at their own homes, chattering as they worked, making papads, various pickles and drying all the spices that had been freshly picked. Today Nirmala kaki with her daughters in law, Hetvi and Hinal, had invited women familiar to her as the streets of Somnath were, to help in their aangan. The terrace overlooked the space and she knew it wouldn't be long before someone turned on the radio for the mini party to start; as though on cue, she heard the afternoon presenter talking about the latest happenings in Bollywood, followed by one of the classics she had heard her mausapa listen to when she was younger.
Sighing she turned away from the railing, before anyone would notice her, humming along to the faint music, the restless feeling she had woken up with refusing to go away. Maybe she should have just gone into work, instead of taking the day off. Though she had managed to keep herself distracted for most of the day as it neared the evening, her agitation grew. Wiping at the beads of sweat on her nose, she sat on the khat she had dragged upstairs, to fold the clothes that had become crisp in the sun. The songs changed, the gossip increasing before dying down and all she could hear was Bhavin and Ram being called to have dinner as she sat still, folded clothes beside her, not moving an inch, looking into the horizon.
"Raavi! Raavi! Are you coming down to have dinner?"
"Raavi!" she finally turned to face Anita, who huffed from the heat that hit her as she walked out on the terrace. "I know it's hard, but you need to come downstairs to eat. We've all been waiting for you. I'm starving and so is this one." she finished pointing towards the expanding belly that was just visible under the flare of her anarkali.
"Sorry Anita di! Let's go. You shouldn't have come upstairs anyways. I would have come down eventually. You need to be careful after all you are carrying precious cargo and we don't want anything to happen."
"Then maybe you should listen and not daydream when we're trying to get your attention." Anita teased as they climbed downstairs, holding onto the railing with one hand, the other firmly in Raavi's.
Raavi almost missed the last step as she walked towards the table, her heartbeat increasing, but a feeling of calm settling over her. She had waited all day to the point of distraction and now she would have her answer. Sat beside her mausapa was Suman kaki, Gautam and Dhara.
"Raavi, dikri, you took so long. We've all been waiting for you. Sumanben, Dhara and Gautam were just about to leave."
"Wait! What happened? I've been waiting all day. I need to know."
"Nothing."
"What? What do you mean nothing. I'm going to go mad if I don't know soon."
"Sorry Raavi. I tried. So did ma and even Gautam. But… nothing."
Her face fell and the butterflies were back wreaking havoc. Agitated she left Anita's hand, citing that she wasn't hungry she rushed back up to her room, shutting the door, throwing herself on the bed.
"Such a drama queen chipkali?"
Her head shot up and she looked around for the owner of the voice, finding the silhouette lounging near the balcony door. She got up rushing to hug him.
"Nothing. All I got after waiting for a whole day was... NOTHING. Really Shiva?"
"You made me wait three years, yet you couldn't one day?"
"Shiva!" she leant back her hands still on his shoulders.
"I got it. I got the scholarship. Two years and I'll have my masters." he finished pecking her cheek.
"Yes! I knew it! You did it Shiva. I'm soo, happy right now!"
"The next thing I tell you will take you over the moon then…"
She looked at him quizzically,, they hadn't discussed anything else so she didn't know what he was talking about. Pulling her closer, he nuzzled her cheek, "We're getting engaged next week. I told you chipkali, I'd convince Mami."
