ok on a serious note:

you have to join pics, edit them, give effects.

like we did in YMLH avatar contest. Here is the link of the avatars. you can get some ideas.

hmm, you can use, Adobe, or Arcsoft Photostudio 5.5

here is the tutorial for making banner. but it uses Adobe so it will helps you in avatars too
