GEO is trying new things these days. The channel is trying to re-invent itself, and Behkawa is a part of their revolution. This controversial serial isn't topping the charts, and isn't one of the most talked-about serialseither, bu definitely deserved a mention here for various reasons.
This NZ Signatures serial tackles many taboo and controversial issues such as, extra marital affairs, husband-wife issues, and above all lesbianism. Yes, I did use it. It's obvious that it promises to be different and isn't for everyone.
Behkawa tells the story of too many families really. Mainly there are two characters, Adnan Siddiqui plays a casanova in the serial, who has girls loving him and paying for him. He enjoys himself and doesn't care about anyone else.
On the other hand is Maria Wasti's track, who lives with her adopted-brother, who in return is actually in love with her. This doesn't sound tempting on paper to be honest. It isn't the kind of story you would like to watch on-screen, but then screenplay and handling can often change your views.
Directed by S.Mazhar Moein, it is actually a very difficult serial to direct. The director decides to keep the theme dark. It has a spooky look to itself, but I have a problem. Why was the serial promoted as a thriller, and something that revolved around kaala jadoo? Seriously? Poor promotion there. I understand they wanted to keep the real track secret, but then unfortunately the synopsis on the channel's official website gave it all away. Poor planning here.
The director on the other hand does his part well. He is efficient in one word and brings out great performances out of everyone. There are scenes that send chill down your spine. Fasih Bari Khan, the writer, also tries something different. The writing is simple, but works. I do not really have much complain from the screenplay, as I believe this is how they always wanted to present it. The script is strong and holds on its own, but then there are tracks that you just do not like for some reasons. The dialogues are likeable at times.
From the acting point of view - everyone scores. Maria Wasti is likeable in her role. This is among one of her better performance in recent times. Adnan Siddiqui pulls it off like a pro. The guy is excellent. Hina Dilpazeer is an asset; the actress never bores you. Here she plays a different role so beautifully, it is even hard to recognize her. Rubina Ashraf goes over at times with her dialogue delivery, but acts well nevertheless. Anoshay looks pretty and this is it. Rashid Farooqui leaves an impression. The actor who plays Maria Wasti's bro has good screen presence buyt needs to work a little on his talent.
Samina Ahmed actually irritates you with her acting in this one. Both the kids are exceptional. There cannot be another one. This one belongs to t he kids and Hina when it comes to acting.
Over all, it is a dark themed play, and the makers were always clear of it being different. It has a good OST, nice acting, fair screenplay, likeable direction and good editing, but then it has a big flaw... it gets too dark at times.
Not a must watch, but if you're watching it then try finishing it.
