Jenim, I have been to New York several times. In fact, just a couple of weeks before disaster hit, I drove to the vicinity of the World Trade Centre but never visited it. (Incidentally, I was at the Pentagon just 5 minutes after the crash on 9-11 and saw the burning fuselage.)
I've been to Paris twice but both visits were very brief. I was there in December last year, spending most of the time attending a conference. My hotel was located in swanky Place Vendome and I found some time to shop at the Galerie Lafayettes nearby. I also managed to walk through the St Germain de Pres region, which is the Latin quarter. It's quite charming, with plenty of cafes. I did do some of the more touristy stuff some years ago during my first visit but going up the Eifel Tower wasn't fun with the crowds. Besides, I was down with the flu and the trip was not very memorable as a result.
During my trip last year, I was taken to the little village of Menton in the south. It's about an hour from Paris by air. It's a very charming village, known for its lemon festival. I visited the campus of Science-Po university, which has a breathtaking view of the Riviera.
Do visit the Middle East -- it's safer than you think. I'd also recommend historic Petra in Jordan.
