Chapter 13

Priya as back in her scooty riding through the familiar streets of Chennai. She was going to shanthi's house after office. The whole day she was restless and tortured. Indhu who was playing outside with her dog greeted priya, she had grown so much! On hearing the noise….SHanthi and Karthik come out. They are totally surprised seeing priya. But Shanthi has an angry llok on her face…Engadi vantha, neenga chennaya vittu ponathu sari….oru phone…..oru thagaval nee enga ponennu sollittu poirukalam illa? Anni, neenga nenaikra maathiri illa….ennanamo nadanthu pochu. She explained to them about how her had her threatened her and hurriedly they left for Coimbatore. She also told everything about herself, her dad's mellowed attitude, Kathir and Uma. Both Karthik and shanthi were very happy to hear about Uma.

Shanthi goes in to make some coffee…Karthik slowly started the topic about Durai. Sipping shanthi's coffee…she told him that he met him briefly outside the bookstore. Avar eppadi irukkar anni…..? It was a party day at L&P enterprises with many VIP's attending. Charu had invited DCP since he had helped Abirami. Just as the function was going to end.,….Abirami picked up her microphone and …Hello everyone, I am so happy to be here after enduring a painful jail time and other events that had happened in my life…having met my real mother was the best thing God had given me…..and being the heir to L & P enterprises….nothing could be better". Abirami was proudly continuing…today I want to give a special surprise for my mom and DCP sir….. Now Durai was puzzled, he had never liked Abirami ever…..but he did have a respect for the love she had for Shyam and Ramya. When I was in jail, DCP sir had helped me a lot and I have great respect for him. I have gained a deep affection for him and I would like us to have a relationship lifelong. DCP sir….hope you understand, I would like you to marry me. Charu was shocked and so was DCP. She quietly chided to ABirami….Abhi, this is not the place to talk about this. Nope, Durai was upset and embarrassed. He gave a look at Abirami and Charu …can we talk in private after this function? The people around were puzzled…..they dispersed, it was going to the gossip of the town now. Will DCP say yes or no to Abirami……
Most thought that DCP will accept since Charu is so rich and well established….but some sensible thought otherwise, they felt that Abirami acted haughtily in this matter.
Charu's office room, Durai started talking.."Mrs. Abirami, before I talk any further I would like to say that I am not making decision because you are a divorcee.. First, I had never had any of such feelings towards you and I have never acted in such a way, second I did not expect nor like the way you gloated your feelings in front of a big crowd especially since you didn't know what I was thinking, third..by doing what you did today..you have proved that you an arrogant rich woman ..and a person like you would never suit me…and above all there is one important reason…..someone has already filled in my soul….and I haven my heart to her…..whatever I told in this room, I could have told in front of that crowd….but I am not as indecent as you are and I don't want anyone embarrassed because of me….. ….

Abirami was fuming with anger and embarrassment…she did not expect this, she had beauty, money ..wealth what more dad this man want. Her thoughts suddenly went to the facelss girl……DCP sir, yaar antha ponnunnu sollunga, I will talk to her….and I will bed her and plead her…Durai interrupted…..Madam, neenga eppadi plead pannuveengannu enakku theriyum……intha vishayatha ippadiye vittuteenganna ungalukku nallathu....He looked at Charu..sorry madam….i had to talk this way, I had no choice…..and he left the bungalow. DCP sir sonnathu sari thaan….enakku avar mela entha varuthamum illa…..nee unna konjam maathikka…she left the room leaving Abirami even more angry and mad.
Durai had promptly informed Karthik about all this and asked them not to belive any rumours floating the air.

She didn't have the courage to face DCP alone…she wanted Shanthi's help….Karthik promised….ok ok, nalla pillayai…..rendu naal wait pannuviyam, PM visit mudiyara varaikkum he cant spare time……apram naane unga meeting arrange panren pothuma? Thanks anna, anni…..she jumped with joy….took leave of them and went home.

Priya's dad was waiting for an auto in front of Gandhi statue when a police car passed by….he saw a familiar face, Durai. The car stopped and out came Durai looking surprised. Uncle nalla irukeengala? He enquired. Priya's dad did not expect that Durai would be nice to him….he was ashamed to face him even. Etho irukken pa….oru heart attack….eppadiyo thapichutten. Veetla ellarum nalla irukkangala……Nalla irukanga uncle…there was silence. Priya's dad had also heard about Abirami rumours….he couldn't bear that priya was not going to get the life she wanted. On the other hand, Durai had come to a conclusion that Priya was married by now….so he didn't find it appropriate to ask about Priya….He abruptly took leave of Priya's dad and got into the car. "Kadavule….en ponnoda vazhkaya veenaduchuttene", Priya;s dad said to himself with a sense of guilt.

Priya came home and saw her dad lying down on the sofa with a disturbed look. Appa, udambu seriyillaya? Illama naan nalla thaan irukken. Durai thambiya paarthen….konjam kooda kobam illama evlo nalla pesinaru theriyuma, avar munndai nikkave enakku thaguthiye illai…Priya smiled at her dad's positive opinion about Durai. She sat down next to her dad, lifted his chin….appa, antha abirami vishayam ellam vathanthi…shanthi anni, Karthik annava paarthen…avanga thaan sonnanga. She narrated every bit that shanthi had told her. Her dad's heart was filled with happiness…kadavule intha kozhanthaingala sethu vachuduppa….Appa, naanum anniyu avara parka nalaikku porom…..polama appa? Inime yenkitta ethukkuma ketkara…..unakku irukra pakkuvam enakku illama than antha thambikitta appadi nadanthukitten…paarthu pesittu vamma.


Priya was excited, exuberant….feeling like a teenager again! She was dreaming about her meet with Durai…she imagined every kind of dialogue she would have with him. She ran to her room and switched on the tv. There he was….on the TV briefing security arrangements….smart as ever with the same kadu kadu face. Priya sat near the TV and gazed at him as they zoomed in and out….she grazed her fingers on the tv and drifted to a dreamy world…when….priya, enna panra ma…..uma walked in on a dreamy priya. She had just heard from her mama about Durai and priya and was happy for her.

Next morning, Priya came out of her room in a blue salwar….anni naan kelambaren…..Uma staring at priya's regular look….disparaged her dress sense and pulled her into the room. She opened Priya's closet and picked a beautiful red and black embroidered saree….selected simple matching jewellery . Priya re-dressed herself and looked at the mirror…something was not right….anni came in and asked priya to ubraid her hair…she neatly blow dried her straight hair, put a small clip with stones….and let it fall beautifully….Now priya was happy…She thanked anni, "Anni enakku oru promise pannanum….neenga kathira parkarappa….ithe maathiri dress pannitu poganum okva? Uma blushed with happiness.
SHanthi came into the house and she enquired about Uma and priya's dad. Priya's dad thanked her for all the help….She finished her coffee and she left with Priya to go to Durai;s house.

Priya was very very nervous..her hands were cold…it was as if she was going to meet Durai for the first time..Hey priya, relax ma….kai pesancu pesanchu…tholellam urinjida poguthu..shanthi teased. Shanthi parked her car in front of the complex…from where they could see Durais balcony. Now priya was truly shivering….priya nee inga iru…naan poi Durai kitta pesittu..naan un cella koopidaren…apram va. Priya shook her head like a robot.

With a smile..shanthi went to durai's house and rang the bell. He opened…..was dressed in a casual jeans and a black cotton shirt. Vaana shanthi…eppadi irukeenga, indhu kutti varalaya? Shanthi questioned himUnga appa amma romba kavalapadranga…..Durai let out a big breath and …enna shanthi ellam therinja neengale ketkareenga, ennala vera yaarayum manasula nenaikka mudiyumnu thonala….sari enna saapidareenga, coffee tea…..?
Aiyo Durai sir, okkarunga….tea coffee kedakkuthu….ungaluku pidichamaathiri ponnu oruthi irukka, enakku relation maathiri…..nichiyama ungalukku pidikkum. Ippove mudivu solla vendam…nithanama yosichu sollunga….Car la thaan irukka…naan ippo koopidaren.,….Durai was standing with an irritated look on his face….he liked shanthi..but didn't expect she would intrude in his life this way…Shanthi, I am not ready to talk to anyone….please understand, his voice was showing out his irritation now. No, you first meet this person and then I will talk about this tomorrow…She went to the balcony and called priya on her cell phone…Durai was standing in his living room with an exasperated look. He could hear shanthi…asking the girl to come up. Just as he walked towards the balcony….the bell rang.

Durai rubbed his fingers on his forehead and opened the door and was spellbound looking at the beautiful and familiar woman in front of him. His eyes widened…..he looked back at shanthi who was coming out of the balcony..she was smiling. He looked back at the beautiful woman staring at him…..yenna ulla vara solla matteengala? The voice pierced straight through the heart into his ribcage…..she didn't talk in front of the bookstore…he was hearing the voice after 3 years. Uh..priya..va…ulla va..he showed her inside…he held the door and created a distance….Priya bent her head and walked in….she was little disappointed, she had thought that the moment he saw her….he could come running, carry her, hug her and kiss her…but he seemed to be acting a bit distant.

There was uncomfortable silence in the room…Shanthi broke the silence….Naan indhuva classlendhu pick up pannaum, Priyava neenga drop pannidungalen please! Shanthi went towards the door…..put on her sandals , looked back at a confused Durai…..innum puriyalaya, nama ellarum nenacha maathiri …priya kalyanam pannikkala..ungala nenache thaan vazhinthirukka……shanthi;s voice died in a surge of emotion…As she said this, Durai looked back at priya in shock ....priya had burst into tears. SHanthi quickly left closing the door behind her…It took few seconds for Durai to realize what was happening…

After 3 years …after the day he proposed to her in his house….this is the first time….they were together alone! He cursed himself for concluding that priya was married…without proper investigation…..what kind of an officer am i? Durai couldn't believe that his life was getting back in shape…he rubbed his teary eyes…and walked towards priya. ..To his disbelief his hands were cold, he slowly raised his hand to touch priya's shoulder…..Priya realizing Durai was near her shrugged her shoulders….and moved farther from him…"Pesatheenga, en kitta pesatheenga….athu eppadi naan vera oruthura kalyanam pannipennu ungalala nenachu parka mudinchithu…" she questioned him childishly….she couldn't meet his eyes,….athu illa priya……as he started to explain himself…..Priya fell into his arms, Durai hugged her so tight that blood would have oozed through her veins….he relaxed his grip on her and they were in the embrace for a very very long time. Priya was totally knocked out…..when she felt durai's fingers grazing her face….he held her chin up and looked straight into her eyes…He gently removed her hair clip to let her hair fall on her face.

Priya thanked her anni for unbraiding her hair…There was very minimal gap between their faces and she could feel his perfume and his breath…a bit nervous she started walking backwards….Durai moved with her, all the time staring at her and playing with her hair……Priya stopped, she had to stop she had almost hit the wall, now she couldn't move any further, but Durai continued moving…..he continued bridging the gap between them…priya could feel her toes touching his, both her hands were pressed aginst the wall, so was her head….Their eyes were locked and Durai slowly bended his head and ….both their lips met, priya closed her eyes. Their lips were locked, god knows how long they had been kissing..one single tear drop ran thorugh her cheek…….when durai released his lips and pulled her into a warm hug. I love you priya, I wont let go of you…ever!
