We don't need no education

< content=10/24/2007 name=date>
Balaji Telefilms is full of adolescents who have exchanged books for saris and sindoor. They are more than willing to become another brick in the Virani wall

Shweta Teotia

Ekta Kapoor, Neha Bamb, Prachi Desai, Krystle D'souza

Move over patriarchy, biased social structures and cultural impediments. A recent trend shows that er… Ekta Kapoor is fast emerging as a sizeable threat to women's education in urban India.

The list of young girls mugging copious dialogue, instead of exam notes, includes Prachi Desai, most of the latest generation of Kasautii Zindagi Kay, recent ex-Balaji Neha Bamb and now Krystle D'souza. These are just a few prominent faces of the small screen. The sum total of below-18 people working as actors would be exhaustive enough to make 'baa' gasp with disbelief.

Not that we expect saas-bahu soaps to be even remotely hinged around education, but it's bothersome that 16-year-olds seem the perfect material for that bechari, sacrificing daughter-in-law on screen. When these school/ college dropouts don the sari and sindoor, the idea of education simply recedes, and comfortably at that, into the background. Prachi Desai, we hear, enrolled in Mithibai College. A year later, although Prachi did not have her degree, she had ample reasons explaining why she could not attend college even for a single day. Her attendance on the sets, however, was an exemplary 100 per cent.

The loyal Balaji workforce is always on the lookout for fresh talent. Their favourite places for bahu-hunting are coffee bars, pubs, college hangouts, etc. Recently, Ekta Kapoor's latest discovery, Krystle D'souza, a standard XII student of St Xavier's college, admitted, "I was just hanging around college when a person from Balaji told me that I had a great face. Would I want to audition? At first I thought she was fooling around. When I made it, I couldn't believe my luck." It's not surprising then that a large number of conniving bahus in Ekta's Balaji-produced shows were, until they were spotted, just ingenuous adolescents bunking junior college lectures.

We don't intend to lambast the production house alone, for these kids are quite willing to make that extra buck and more. They have full support from ambitious parents, and thrilled teachers. Prachi Desai, in another attempt to take her HSC exam, ended up scribbling autographs, instead, in an examination hall in Pune.

Another cardinal, almost sacrosanct rule at Balaji is that come what may, no leave is granted for such trivial purposes (read taking exams). They believe that if exams are so important, simply quit the show. Megha Gupta aka Disha of Kkavyanjali did the same. A student of BMM at Wilson College, Megha was warned by her college to improve her attendance. "I could not even attend my Culture Studies examination due to the show. Now I will appear for the same subject as a KT," rued Megha few months ago.

Whether these soaps are a pasquinade mocking the education system here, or a great landmark in popular culture is a question open to interpretation. These young girls, who have gladly traded college canteens for rasoi ki garmi, may not feel the need for further education. What they need to know is that they are headed to become another brick in the Virani wall.

The article is a bit harsh. But it does have a point. I was a little surprised myself when I read about Krystle. She may express a desire to complete her education in the near future, but it's going to be extremely difficult getting back to studies.

I don't think the article is harsh at all... the article is completley true.. wat is a person without a d ecent education... i think these people are very wrong in choosing such acting opportuinities over the education.... at least coming from my perspective... i would n ever make such a sacrifice...

these girls dont realize that someday when their acting careers are at a low... the only thing that will s tand by them is their education...

anyways.... it's their lives... and it's not only these girls... I'm sure bunch of the guys don't have proper education either...look at Iqbal... he too dropped out of school to pursue a career...

I think they shouldn't have made it gender specific... but anyways...

the point is... u should have at least a minimal degree.. even sports players are required to complete a certain degree...

I just hope someday they realize the importance of a proper education!

totally agree with u Manna....a person is nothing without education in my opinion as well.....and yeah some people drop out of college to make their career in acting and sometimes the audience doesn't like them and their acting so they dont become popular and dont get offers for shows and then the only thing that can help u is ur education to make a Plan B for ur career....well atleast im gonna get my Education and not drop out...😆 and yeah i do agree they shouldnt have made it gender specific cuz aaj kal both guys and girls drop out and dont complete their education....but u know as some ppl say its more important for guys to complete their education kyunki larkiyan ki shaadi tho bina education ho ja thi hai but nobody marries a guy that has no education...😆 well those were the old times...now girls dont like to be house wives and just stay home....they also like to make their own status and not depend on others...anyways Manna u will or have completed ur education rite? i hope u dont drop out too...😆 OMG i luv ur siggys....they are just HOTT HOTT HOTT!!!! well what else can u expect from AK? 😆😍

Neha did B.Com in private from Poddar College in Mumbai....so she doesnt fall into this category exactly. I dont know if she graduated but she did continue her studies.

Why do we always think some degrees are going 2 give us success...even if these girls dont have acting career later they can open a boutique, or do interior decoration or some kind of business which doesnt require a college degree.

Indians have got to think out of the box....theres tons of possibilties out there.
Here in the west hardly 70% of High School grads go to college...they go on to trade schools or professions straight away.

And Manna....u r right on target...Iqbal is also a college dropout....if his acting career fails, what will he do? At least the girls here can get married and be housewives... 😉 😆

I think u should be certified to have a baby... soo i do strongly believe that u need education for even jobs as such

I mean if that's wat u want to do great... but if that's jus an alternative.. nothin to be proud of.... and I don't think becomnig open minded is going to college or tradeschool as an alternative... open-mindedness is accepting all careers and choosing plumbing/carpentry as ur future career ...

And Manna....u r right on target...Iqbal is also a college dropout....if his acting career fails, what will he do? At least the girls here can get married and be housewives... 😉 😆 ahhahahhaa but dude that's not the rite way to think man... i don't wanna be some servant LOL... i mean i hate ppl who are housewives... makes me feel as if they haven't accomplished anything in life... and I know that for a fact... a few of my aunts always tell me how they feel like they haven't accomplished anything esp sitting at home all the time... and how they're really angry at themselves.. soo yeah i think education's really imp
