"I am dying to do theatre...."

She has done serials like Gharana, Asha Ki Kiran, Kittie Party and now she is the face of Sahara One's primetime show Prratima. Jyoti Mukherjee may have thus far been known more as Rani Mukherjee's sister in law and producer Raja Mukherjee's wife, but is now keen to strike out on her own. She took time off on the sets of Prratima to chat with Sapana Patil.

Jyoti Mukherjee: the dusky beauty

Are you surprised that Prratima is doing well, in spite of the fact that other Sahara One shows like mega starrers Kamini Damini, Karishma- A Miracle of Destiny and Sahib Bibi aur Gulam flopped?
Yes, I am surprised! Prratima didn't get the kind of publicity that these serials did. Actually speaking, it didn't get any publicity at all. There weren't any hoardings or billboards. Sahara Manoranjan was becoming Sahara One at the time of the serial's launch. They (Sahara) wanted to publicise their new image. In all this exercise, Prratima could not portray its image.

You have a sweet voice. Didn't you think of taking up singing?
(laughs) My mother didn't' think of it. She put me in a dance academy. I am a trained Kathak dancer.

Are you a trained actor too or did you learn acting on the sets?
Most of my shows have been with Anurag Basu. (director of Koshish Ek Asha). I have learnt a lot from him.

What else do you like to do?
I design clothes for the cast of Prratima.

Are you considering taking up designing garments on a full time basis?
Yes maybe, sometime later in life when I decide to take a break from acting. But you know, it is difficult for an actor to be away from acting for a long time. He will definitely come back to acting.

Jyoti talks about her aspirations to work in theatre

Are you coming up with any new shows?
Yes, we are considering ideas for new shows, but they are still in the planning stages....

Will you act in them?
(laughs) It's difficult to both produce a serial and act in it. In fact, when I am not shooting for Prratima, everyone comes to me for small things to be set right with costumes. So it keeps me very busy.

Have you thought of doing theatre?
Gosh! I am dying to do theatre. I call up my friends and ask them if they know of any roles. I am willing to work for free if I get to work in theatre!

What about acting in films?
Films are a no-no right now. Probably, it's beyond my comfort zone.

Do you have any dream role in particular that you want to do?
No, I don't have any dream role. Never thought of one in fact.

How do you balance home, acting and costume designing?
Ours is a joint family. Initially, my family members got wild with the erratic schedules that I had to follow. But they come from a filmi background. We have got used to each other now and so things are taken care of.
