Poor Karthik, he was puzzled by R's behavior, now he is devastated by his parents decision about his future, what an unforgettable birthday it is for him! It is surprising that Sumi, who senses that there is something between KR, is just not bothered about it and as you've rightly explained, it is her character. R feeling that she could have helped Karthik avoid this situation was perfect too, but our madam is a little slow to react on such important matters and that is her character. Too eager to see how K manages to get out of this situation successfully.
