Chapter 19 SARS in second year
Sam went to Anju's house on a few Sundays. He got along with everyone in the house. One Sunday Sam was feeling homesick and he wanted to go to her house, but he was hesitating for some reason. Finally his heart won and he went to Anju's house directly from church. He was surprised to see many vegetarian dishes on that Sunday as he had always relished non-veg on Sundays in their house.
Anju's mom saw the surprise in his face and said,
Mom: I knew you would fast on these lent days. You are coming here on alternate Sundays. I expected you today.
Sam was surprised and he felt very much at home.
Anju or her dad did not seem to be surprised. Later he realised that they are thoughtful about all their family friends. This gesture reminded his mom to him. His mom also respects different practices of different people. Now he understood why he felt at home.
During this period, Sam's feelings towards Anju increased considerably. She was surprised to see that she is the same both in college and at home. She was non-stop non-sense at home too. He wanted to change Anju's nature at college. He felt still Anju was more comfortable with Rohit and Sophy than Sam. So she would definitely not change her nature if he says that.
Their final exams in first year were nearing. They all bought CUG mobile connection. All the four talked to each other everyday.
They did their final exams very well. Sam's parents,bro had come to India during their vacation. Sam took his parents to Rohit and Anju's house. They liked both the families. But Sam's mom and Anju's mom were of more or less same nature. So both the families gelled very well.
Their vacation was over; they were waiting for their first day in second year. Anju was delighted to go to her new department. Sam felt very bad that he will not be able to meet Anju often.
All the four decided to have lunch together and meet in the evening before leaving for home/hostel.
All the four were able to meet in the evenings regularly, in the initial few months. Every evening Anju was the only one to talk about that day. The rest listened or sometimes gave her some suggestions.
Each one except Anju sometimes skipped the evening meet, whenever they were busy in their labs/class.
Anyway atleast any two met everyday. One day Anju was waiting for nearly 20 minutes, no one turned up. She was in a bad mood that day. Her unit mate had irritated her and she wanted to share that to her friends. But no one turned. She felt very bad and continued to wait for another 20 minutes and left that place with anger and tears.
Anju expected her friends to call her and ask about her day. She was very much disappointed. The rest 3 were not aware that Anju was waiting for a long time.
Anju lost her patience and called Rohit first, His phone was continuously ringing and no response.
She next tried Sophy her phone was engaged.
Finally she tried Sam. He picked and said a sweet "Hi"
Anju was very much upset and she was wild with all her friends.
She wanted to shout at him, but tears came first.
Sam understood that something is wrong with Anju.
Sam: What happened Anju?
Anju: I was waiting for one hour in our usual place and no one turned up. You people are not my true friends.
Sam just then realised about evening meet and he tried to explain his situation.
Anju: I don't want any explanation. I expected a call atleast. Even now it was me who called.
Sam apologised imm and asked her about that day. He sensed that there should be something else bothering her.
Anju calmed down, as Sam understood that her day was not pleasant.
Then she narrated all the petty fights with her unit mate. She then became normal. Sam promised her that he would meet her in the evening at any cost and if he is unable to he would definitely inform her in advance.
That made Anju even more normal. She had forgotten her anger over Rohit and Sophy.
So next when she received calls from Rohit and Sophy seeing her missed calls, she did not have much to complain. She narrated the incidents in a plain tone. So Rohit and Sophy were not aware of her out burst and normalcy.
