This is an OS that I've wanted to write from a long time. It's in Nemichand Ganghwal's point of view. The setting is Umesh - Amanpreet wedding and Nisha's change. I don't know if I've done justice to the characters or if it is worth reading. I just wrote it because it was occupying too much space in my brain 😛
"Arre kaha gaye sab log? Dekho Registrar sahab bhi aa gaye hai." I shouted on the top of my voice. When my eldest daughter - in - law rushed out, adjusting her pallu, I asked her, "Kyu bhai Vimla, tere bete ko ab shaadi nahi karni kya? Kaha hai sab??"
"Babuji, woh Umesh ko Ramesh aur Suketu tayar kar rahe hai. Aur Aman --. Dekhiye, aa gayi." Vimla smiled at her soon-to-be-daughter-in-law. I satisfied with the love in her eyes for the girl. It was surprising, the change in her attitude, after she saw how smart Aman was while Virendra was in danger. I looked at Aman, who dressed in a heavy red Saari with an unmatched dupatta on her head. She looked beautiful. My lovely grand daughters, Kirti and Dolly both walked beside her. Slowly everyone started arriving.
The Registrar looked amused at the bickering between Mohan and Rupan, Kirti's unending makeup, Saurav, Bunty and Suketu pulling her leg, Umesh and Amanpreet sharing shy glances, Jwala correcting Dolly's English. I hated the way Leelaji was laughing at Dolly after that, but I couldn't say anything. She was Dolly's mother - in - law and a guest. I decided to ignore her thereafter. Almost everyone was here, except the head of my vanar sena and her beloved Dadi. Looking at the anxious looks that Laxmi and Ramesh were giving to the rest of the family, I understood that my most badmash grand daughter had definitely done something.
Suddenly, Saroj rushed to my side, looking as beautiful as she always did. She gave me a broad smile and waited. Now only two people were awaited. I looked again at the doorway to see Virendra entering. I then heard almost all the others gasp in shock. Virendra looked confused. He asked, looking at Mohan, "Arre kya hua bhai, sab mujhe aise kyu dekh rahe ho? Accha nahi dikh raha hu kya??" How typical of Virendra - demanding all that attention but very innocently. When no one answered him, he shook his head at me and walked in. It was then that I saw the sight that had amazed everyone.
Nisha Ganghwal - my grand daughter Nisha - stood there, looking very uncertain, wearing a girl's ethnic dress, something of the kind Dolly wore before her marriage. She looked like a girl! I felt numb with joy, realising that she had decided to leave her past behind.
I had been very very upset from the time when I came to know what the little girl had faced. I felt like I had failed, failed to understand, to protect her. All her cousins and Saroj rushed to her, Mohan - Rupan, Vimla and Virendra, who had just turned, stared and stared at the beauty of innocence in front of them. They were all exclaiming in surprise, amazement and wonder. Ramesh was smiling inwardly.
I felt numb. Joy, love, peace, satisfaction flooded my mind. Unable to stand, I fell backwards on the chair behind me. And true to her nature, it was Nisha who ran to me first. Helping me sit up properly, she looked for a sign of discomfort, pain or unease. Yet, all that I could show her were tears.
Tears of sheer joy and happiness. I gave her a faint smile through the tears which I couldn't control and she hugged me tight. I held her close and asked God to bless her, to protect and guide her where I couldn't be with her. When everyone was assured that I was okay, they had smiles on their faces. No one had seen me cry out of joy before, except my wife. She was the only one who had maintained her composure when I fell, knowing exactly what I was feeling. Oh Saroj, what would I do without you? Though I took the credit, it was Saroj who truly kept the family glued together.
When I had settled down, Nisha bent to touch my feet. I blessed her for eternity. Laxmi was watching us with tears in her own eyes. One glance at her told me it was the happiest day of her life. Though I may have gone wrong many times before, I sure had taken a few correct decisions too. Allowing Ramesh to marry Laxmi, allowing Nisha to pursue her career and accepting Amanpreet were definitely some of them. After looking around, I asked them, "Ab shaadi bhi karni hai ya sirf meri taraf dekh kar hi khush ho jaoge??" He
Everyone laughed and the registrarstarted with his process. Suddenly, Rupan taunted Vimla, "Did, aapka bahu toh bohot ziddi nikli! Mere itne kehne ke baad bhi usne woh dupatta nahi utara. Ab Dekho na, kitna ajeeb dikh raha hai."
Laxmi spoke up, "Didi, woh Aman ki Ma ke shaadi ka dupatta hai. Uske Ma ki aakhri iccha thi ki Aman ye apne shaadi me pehne." Rupan gave her a disdainful look. I wanted to interrupt them, but Saroj held my hand and stopped me. She silently shook her head. I stopped because I realized this wasn't the time and place.
"Hame shayad aane me der ho gayi," Viraj, who was standing in the doorway with a big gift in his hand, said a little sadly. Amanpreet rushed to him and brought him in. When he had smiled and greeted everyone, he turned to Nisha and stopped in his tracks. When he was staring at her, Ramesh cleared his throat impatiently. Viraj and Nisha, who had shared an eye lock looked away awkwardly. I felt amused. I was supposed to be angry that a man was looking at my grand daughter, yet I felt good. I looked around to see Saroj smiling at me. She had again understood what amused me and for her happiness, I did not question all that had happened. In the meanwhile, only Vimla looked troubled about something. Soon, the registrar declared Umesh and Aman married and issued the marraige certificate.
The couple came to their Dadaji - Dadi first and we both blessed them together. When they went to Virendra and Vimla, he was very enthusiastic and blessed them heartily. Vimla was happy yet hesitant. Ramesh noticed that and asked, "Kyu bhabi, ab Umesh sirf aapki baat nahi sunega isliye maayus ho kya?" and all laughed at that. Vimla, unable to hold herself any longer, asked Amanpreet, "Aman, tum ne mujhe bataya nahi ki woh tumhari Ma ke shaadi ka joda hai. Agar mujhe pata hota toh mai tumhe kabhi nahi kehti ye pehne ko..." she trailed off.
"Ma, yeh Naniji iccha thi ki Umesh ki patni ye pehne. Unki marzi kaise taal sakti hu mai? Aur rahi baat Ma ki, toh unka dupatta bhi toh hai! Aise me Ma bhi khush aur Naniji bhi!" Amanpreet answered. Before Vimla could reply, I turned to Nisha, "Bhai Nisha, aaj mujhe tujhe thank you bolna padega...ye ladki toh sirf Ganghwal parivaar ke liye hi bani ho sakti hai. Accha hua ki tune mujhe jaldi mana liya. Itni samajhdar bahu kaise chodta?"
Everyone had to smile at that. Except Rupan of course. How could she be happy when others were?? Khair...that would also change someday. Hopefully.
Right now, what was more important was the look that Nisha was giving Viraj Singh Rathor, while he hugged Aman and Umesh. Hmm...does that mean Nisha is ready for crossing another milestone in her life? I hadn't missed the admiration in Viraj's eyes when he first saw my Nisha looking so beautiful, either. Whether he was the man for her or not, whether there was a future to this, I did not know. I just knew that I had a lot to thank Viraj for. He brought back my little girl from wherever she was lost. It was the ushering - in of many new events. But that would all come later.
Today, my family was happy, successful and together. What else could I ask God for?
