Me being a mallu is not exactly sure about daayan. In Kerala we don't have them. Of course we have our own set of supernatural creatures like the Yakshi, who is a female undead dead who lives on top of palm trees and likes to lure lonely travellers to feast on their blood.
Then there is our fav Kuttichathan who is kind of a naughty boy who can be enslaved to make him do your bidding. He doesn't actually like to harm anyone but just acts according to his master's command. He likes to throw stones at houses.
There is Maadan, a huge creature who walks in the night. He keeps off busy streets. In old times it was said he liked to stalk lonely travellers who would know about it from the sound of the chains he was bound with. One was not supposed to look back when followed by this being
We have Prethams,(ghost) who are just the souls which have not found salvation. They could be evil or good.
Another supernatural being is Gandarvans, who are those who serve 'madira' in swargalog.. Kind of Indra's and other devas' waiters and court musicians. They are deported to earth when the devas are displeased with them. They are handsome hunks who on coming to earth ensnares beautiful women. Their presence is notified by the fragrance of some specific flowers.
Apart from these supernatural beings we have stories on sorcerers.
Oye... I kind of forgot what I started the post about. So Forumwasis what do you know about a Daayan? How does she come into existence? What evil deeds does she do? Plz share your views?
