PART 1
It was nice cool morning when Sweety Ahluwalia woke up. It wasn't a very early Saturday morning. She looked at the bedside alarm clock which said 07.30 am. She sat up slowly and sleepily, and said a silent prayer. Then she looked at her husband. Lucky Singh Ahluwalia was snoring away as usual. She smiled as she looked at him. She was so fond of his snores, so used to it after nearly twenty years of marriage. Twenty two? She suddenly realized and looked at the calendar on the wall opposite her and smiled, and then glanced at Lucky. Not twenty two, twenty three years!
Sweety got up, gathering her hair into a tiny bun and went to the washroom. She didn't notice Lucky opening his eyes while pretending to snore.
Lucky opened his eyes a little and peeped through his eyelids. When Sweety came out, he again shut his eyes and continued to snore. Not suspecting anything amiss, Sweety went to open the cupboard to take her robes out. She was surprised to see a large gift wrapped object right on her robes. Keeping her hands to her smiling mouth, Sweety took it and turned around slowly and looked up.
Sweety- Luckyji! Aap! Aap uth gaye!
Lucky was standing in front of her, smiling, his hands behind his back. She saw curiously observed that and looked at Lucky.
Lucky- Darlingji! Happy Anniversary!
Sweety- (Putting her hands on his Tshirt collar) To you too, jee! Thank you!
Lucky smiled.
Sweety- Lekin aapka haath mein kya hai?
Lucky brought his arms forward and Sweety saw a smaller gift wrapped object put into her hands. She looked at Lucky shyly.
Sweety- Luckyjee! Main kholke dekhu?
Lucky smiled and took her shoulders and sat her down on the bed.
Lucky- Sweetyjee! Kholke dekhiye na!
Sweety smiled and asked- Kaunsa gift pehle kholoon?
Lucky- Jo bhi! Aapki marzi!
Sweety smiled and was about to open the smaller gift.
Lucky- Sweetyjee aap pehle bada wala kholiye!
Sweety laughed and started to unwrap the bigger gift. It was a beautiful olive green and golden colured silk chiffon sari. She was amazed and Lucky looked at her expression, smiling with a hope.
Sweety- Luckyjee! Arre wah yeh waakeyi itni khoobsurat sari! Mere liye?
Lucky- Kaise baat puch rahi ho jee? Aap ke liye nahi toh kiske liye hoga?
Sweety laughed and put her hand to her husband's face- Thank you jee!
Lucky- Ab aap dusra wala kholiye jee!
Sweety laughingly opened the smaller gift. It was a jewel set of necklace, bangles, earrings and alongside was a small perfume bottle.
Sweety- Luckyjee! Aap Itne saare'! Kya zaroori tha? Mehenga hua hai na!
Luckyjee- Naa jee. Patni ke liye kuch bhi mehenga nahi hai! Khaas jab aaj ek special din hai! (Lucky was in his flirty mood, smiling at his wife)
Sweety laughed, blushing and then looked at him- Thank you Luckyjee! (She looked at her gifts, thought of something and looked at him) Luckyjee! Aap na ek kaam kijiye! Aap ab so jaaye, mein na abhi aati hoon!
Lucky- (Happy ) Theek hai jee! (Looked at her) Sweetyjee, kya mere liye kuch khaas kuch special banaaoge?
Sweety looked at him meaningfully. Lucky turned his face slowly away- Nahin jee. Koi baat nahi.
He didn't see her naughty smile. She was smiling and he suddenly noticed her expression in the mirror. He looked at her and she laughed.
Sweety- Kya baat kar rahe ho jee, aap! Aap ke liye surprise khaana banaaongi aaj!
Lucky was excited- O thank you jee! Thank you! O balle balle! (He danced away and Sweety laughed)
Sweety- Luckyjee, ab aap aaraam kijiye! Main na abhi aati hoon!
When Sweety entered the kitchen, she was shocked. The kitchen table was full of mess and her children, Rocky Singh Ahluwalia and Ginny aka Gulwant Kaur Ahluwalia were in a state of mess. Sweety was in a good mood so she didn't interrupt but instead hid from them to observe them.
Rocky- Yeh kya hua!
Ginny- Bhaiyya! Maine aapko kaha ki namak daalo, cheeni nahi! Dekho! Ab sab khatam!
Sweety was amused as she watched them. They were attempting to make something which failed by all obvious means. Clearing her throat, pretending to be angry, she entered the kitchen. Rocky and Ginny, alarmed, stared at her. She asked them with her raised eyebrow and a questioning head tilt- Yeh kya ho raha hai?
Rocky and Ginny glared at each other and looked downcast as they stared away.
Sweety- Aww bachon! Jaane do! Ab mere saath naashta banao! Kyon?
Rocky and Ginny looked at her, surprised. She was not angry.
Ginny- Mamma! Happy anniversary!
Rocky- Mom! H-A-T-Y!
Sweety- Ain?
Ginny- (Completing for her brother) Happy Anniversary To You!
The children hug her and she hugged them back, and then she suddenly realized their mess was on her as well!
Sweety- Haye Rabba! (She tried to send them away to change but they stayed behind adamantly to help her clean the kitchen and make tea)
Sweety smiled and sent them to change as soon as tea was ready. She took her and Lucky's cup on the tray and went up to her bedroom.
Lucky was awaiting her, pretending to sleep. She came and he sleepily opened his eyes as she called out to him. Sitting by his side, she called him and he opened his eyes, yawned, and slowly sat up in the bed. She smiled at him as he smilingly took the cup of tea and sipped it.
Lucky then began to complain that what kind of a husband he was, that he slept on their anniversary morning, when he should have been down, helping her. Sweety smiled and told him she did not mind this today, as he got up first thing in the morning and wished her and gave her such a beautiful gift. Lucky looked at her and smiled.
Sweety- Luckyjee. Aap please Aankhei bandh karlijye!
Lucky- Kyon?
Sweety- Karlijiye na! Aur kholna mat! (Lucky closed his eyes)
Minutes later Lucky felt something heavy in his hand and he looked down. It was a gift and he looked at Sweety.
Lucky- Sweetyjee!?
Sweety- Luckyjee, aap ke liye!
Lucky was delighted and slowly unwrapped and opened it. It was a nice black-dark blue shirt and on it was a small box of a branded watch. He looked at Sweety.
Lucky- Ghadi! Woh bhi'! Sweetyjee, itna takleefh karne kya zaroori tha?!
Sweety- Yeh takleefh kya hui?! Aaj ki din aise na kaho! Theek hai. Nahi accha laga toh mein waapus dungi! (She pretended to sulk away)
Lucky- Accha accha darlingjee, sorry sorry! (He took her hand as she looked at him) Sweetyjee. Thank you! I love you!
Sweety- (Breaking into a wide smile) Love you too Jee!
They smiled and hugged each other and then broke apart.
Lucky- Har saal ki tarah Gurudwara chalein?
Sweety nodded, smiling- Luckyjee, Pehle mein bachon ke saath naashta banati hoon. Uske baad mein taiyaar hongi. Aap chai pijiye aur taiyaar ho jaaye!
Lucky nodded and took his tea cup from the bedside table.
Lucky came down, calling- Mera shere, sherni! Kaha ho tumlog! (He was in a jovial mood)
Ginny was setting the table while Rocky was in his room. She ran up to him and hugged him- Daddyjee! Good morning! Happy anniversary!
Rocky came up and hugged his dad as well-Hey dad! Happy Anniversary Dad!
Lucky hugged his children, smiling.
Sweety came forward- Oi Luckyjee! Taiyaar ho jee? Main abhi aati hoon!
Lucky- Ok jee! (He sat down to his newspaper, his children on either sides of him) Kya hua bachon? Thak gaye ho itne subha subha?
Ginny- Daddyjee, hum bas aap dono ke liye kuch banate chaahte thei lekin nahi kar paayi. Mom aayi aur kaam aur bar gaye!
Rocky- Ya Dad! I swear!
Lucky (Laughing)- Oi puttar! Ma ko dekh kar seekho! Itna kaam karte hain hum sab ke liye! Ab samajh aaye na, kaam kaisa hota hai?
The kids agreed and leant against his shoulders. When Sweety came down, ready, she found the three of them asleep. She was amused.
Sweety- Oi Luckyjee! Uthiye jee! Oi Ginny! Rocky! Uth!
Her family woke up and looked around.
Rocky- Kya hua?!
Ginny- Huh huh?
Lucky also looked around then saw Sweety standing there, her hands on her waist. She was amused.
Sweety- Kya hai yeh? Baap aur bachon! Aise nahi hai ki Aap aur yeh dono bandar subhei paanch bajei uth gaye! Chalein jee?
Lucky got up while the kids sleepily leant back on the sofa, their eyes closed. Sweety observed them and opened her mouth.
Lucky- O Sweetyjee, Rehne do na! Sone do, waapus aaongi hum aur uske baad uthaaonga mein in dono ko.
Sweety looked at him, then the kids and smiled- Theek hain jee! Jaise aap chaaho!
The couple left for the gurudwara, locking the house door.
