I really like this show...but why is the Priya character shown to be such a villain??

Is it so wrong for an educated woman to want to work?? And why is a woman with such a wish to be shown as a conniving bitch who has no respect for anyone?? It sends out SUCH a bad message!!

It makes life so much more difficult for women who are facing challenges at home already to see such ideas being reinforced in such a bad way on a public medium.

They can show her as having negative qualities, but why to show that she is villain just because she is ambitious?!

Even I had the same thought... She is fighting but her reason is valid. Priya wants to work let her join business, but don't give her too much power. What comes across wrong in her case is her arrogance of her degree, class and looks down on other professions like that of her husband. She thinks just because she has degree and wants to do business and her husband doesn't makes her superior and him inferior.

Here he is following his mother's wish.its never shown he is against Priya.he wants to help her but not know how.even in his brother's case it's vidhi story who helped him.secondly author showing two phases of a women ,one vidhi who wants to work but with her family blessings without harming their reputation. Second Priya although she is highly qualified but full off arrogance.such type of obstinacy make people think twice before allowing them to work.when she is not working then she keeps reputation of her family below her.if she is so much interested to do work then why she wants all business for her own.if one is so much talented then dude start from grassroots level.its easy to put label of your own on others achievements. If she is talented then she can move forward with carrying her partner with her.but the words she used for her husband dude that is literally ear tearing.to gain respect first u have to give it.🤗

I think Dev doesn't mind Priya joining the business but he requires permission from his step-mother, who herself is bound by promise to her deceased husband of not allowing women to join the family business. Dev does have female employees but he doesn't like the intertwining of personal and professional life and what goes on in both areas of his life. If it was in his power, he would've liked to allow her to work --- they are bound by their kind of promise. They are referencing such similar incidence to what happened in Mahabharat.

Just in the case of Abhi working in his preferred field (even if its entry level job), the mother gave permission to work whereas Priya wasn't allowed to work due to the promise to Dev's father. He might not want to go against chaos against the step-mother or cause further turbulence in personal life.

Priya has the choice to walk out of the marriage if she feels caged as opposed to being hell-bent on working and living in delusion when her father was told of women not allowed to work.

Maybe we should also consider that shows are not trying to "give messages" all the time. Maybe they are just trying to tell a story? 😆.....Have people paused to consider that before trying to find a message in everything from how Priya is shown to how Vidhi is shown? 😆

Maybe....just maybe, all the makers want to show is a contrast of the kind of approach different people use in this world. Priya wants to work and so does Vidhi....but their approaches towards getting a job are very different. Because all kinds of people exist in this world...ambitious and non-ambitious ones. The show is not saying that ambitious women are bad....it is Priya's behavior that is bad - she is one woman, not a representative of all womankind that we need some "message" from her.

How come I never see people wondering about how Vidhi's mom is being shown balancing home and work so well? All the fixation is only on the "message" coming from Priya and none from Vidhi's mom? 😆....is it because people always focus on the negativity and the person who makes the loudest noise?

Ultimately this is just a power game between the different characters in this show....nothing to do with any message on working women.

Agree that ITV shows are often for entertainment, rather than to give any message. But every story always gives out subliminal messages, that we may not consciously recognize, but when we constantly see stories being told in a certain way, it can make us interpret situations in the same way, even if that way is wrong.

And I agree that Priya's behaviour is wrong. But that's my exact point - they are showing a rude, arrogant person to show an ambitious woman and a docile, agreeable person who gets a job but would be happy to not do a job at all. It's very subtle but it is still a very binary way of showing things. I was, in fact, happy that they were showing that her husband wants to do things other than business, and feels oppressed under family pressure. When they can show that sensitively, why to make Priya such a villain?

@bold: Who is "we" here? Isn't it presumptuous to think that what is subliminal as per you will also be subliminal for everyone else? Isn't that a subjective thing? Then why speak for the collective here?

I don't count myself in this "we"....Priya comes across as a pretentious character to me not really fighting for any equality but using buzzwords to make this about her so called oppression. Where has the story shied away from clearly saying that Satyavati's perspective about women not working and Vidhi's father's perspective about women not working is regressive? They have already openly shown that but somehow all that gets forgotten cuz Priya is screaming the place down in every episode to paint herself as some lone crusader for women's equality....which she hardly is. She is not a "villain' because she is ambitious or educated. She is criticized for her lack of manners....which has nothing to do with education or drive. Vidhi is educated but lacks drive. Vidhi's mom is not as educated but she has the drive and savvy to still find a way to work and navigate her husband's regressive thinking. Drive isn't defined only by an educated woman screaming to be a CEO.

Maybe all the screaming works as subliminal messaging for some folks....doesn't work for me.

First of all this is a discussion forum, so obviously everyone is going to write their opinion the way they say it. I am not asking anyone to see the show the way I am seeing it. I simply opened a topic for discussion. And it was clearly a good decision, as it has brought out many topics.

I don't think I claimed in any of my above posts that Priya represents equality or is right in any way. I am saying exactly the opposite. Again, I did not make any mention of Vidhi's mother because I feel she deserves another thread altogether. It takes a lot of grit and compassion to be a woman like her.

Also, I do not appreciate how you made your counter-response to mine more like an attack instead of a healthy discussion. Please understand that this is supposed to be a discussion forum where all viewpoints, whether one likes them or not, are welcome and deserve their space. In fact, I do agree with a lot of what you have written, even if the tone was irksome.
