Usha Khanna (born 7 October 1941) is an Indian music director in Hindi cinema. She is the third female music director to enter the Hindi film industry, after Jaddan Bai and Saraswati Devi[1] and is one of the most commercially successful music directors in the male dominated music industry. She is most known for songs like “maine rakha hai mohabbat” (Shabnam), “Hum tum say juda ho ke” (ek sapaira ek lutaira), “gaa deewane jhoom ke” (Flat no. 9), "Chhodo kal ki baatein" (Hum Hindustani), "Shaayad meri shaadi ka khayal" (Souten), and “tu is tarah Se meri zindagi” (Aap to aise na the).[2] She remained active for more than 3 decades from 1960s to 1980s. She is still active making some music for some movies and television-serials, more than 40 years after her debut as music director in Dil Deke Dekho (1959). She received a Filmfare Award nomination for composing the songs for the huge hit film Souten (1983). She was married to director, producer, lyricist, Sawan Kumar Tak, from whom she separated later on.

Born in Gwalior, her father, Manohar Khanna, was a lyricist and singer, working as Assistant Superintendent in the Water Works Department in the then Gwalior State. When he came to Bombay (now Mumbai) for some work in 1946 he by chance met Jaddanbai who was mother of Hindi film actress Nargis Dutt. On her request he started writing gazals for Hindi films by the name, Jaaved Anwar. He was getting a monthly salary of Rs. 250 in Gwalior State and Jaddanabi offered him Rs. 800 for 3 gazals which he wrote for Jaddanbai's Nargis Art Productions film, Romeo Juliet.

The popular music director O. P. Nayyar introduced Usha Khanna to Sashadhar Mukherjee, a powerful man in the Indian film industry at that time. She sang a song for Mukherjee, and when he realised that she had composed the song on her own, he told her to compose two songs per day for one year. After a few months, Mukherjee signed her as the composer for his movie Dil Deke Dekho (1959) as a music composer.[5] The film, which also introduced the actress Asha Parekh, became a big hit, and Mukherjee hired her again for another Asha Parekh starrer Hum Hindustani (1961).

After she started composing music for Hindi movies, Usha Khanna struggled to establish herself as a music director, despite producing many hit songs. She often collaborated with Asha Bhosle, who referred to Usha Khanna as her daughter, and Mohammed Rafi. This trio produced many hit songs. Some of songs sung by Mohammed Rafi under composition of Usha Khanna are in Dil Deke Dekho (1959), Hawas (1974), Saajan Ki Saheli (1981), and Aap To Aise Na The (1980).

Saawan Kumar was often the lyricist for Usha Khanna, and wrote most of the lyrics for her songs. He directed and produced eleven movies she scored the music for. Usha Khanna was married to Sawan Kumar Tak but later they separated though remained on good terms. Usha Khanna remained quite active as a composer and the last movie she has given music to was in 2003. The movie was Dil Pardesi Ho Gaya, produced and directed by her ex-husband Saawan Kumar.[6]

Usha Khanna often took inspiration from Arabic music, which she liked and she claims that she has never lifted any song directly, but that she has composed something along the lines.

Usha Khanna herself also sang a few songs as a playback singer.

Many of Usha Khanna's songs are still very popular. Some of the other movies she composed for are Shabnam, Aankh Micholi, Saajan Bina Suhagan, Souten, Sajan ki Saheli, Ab Kya Hoga, Lal Bungla, Dada, Do Khiladi, Hanste Khelte.

In 1979 K. J. Yesudas received Filmfare award for her song "Dil ke tukde tukde" in the film Dada.💔

The effort she had put earlier in life to establish herself in the industry, made her realise how difficult it was to break through, and this made her often give the chance to new singers. She gave the chance to the singers who were little known at that time – ✍️🌿Anupama Deshpande, Pankaj Udhas, Hemlata, Mohammed Aziz, Roop Kumar Rathod, Shabbir Kumar, and Sonu Nigam. Many of these went on to become notable singers.

This is one of my favourite songs composed by Usha Khanna, i believe it is also one of the most popular songs composed by her

I think many of her films might not be big A-list films. They were not like downright B-grade films but they were smaller films that recognised music composers might have not had the inclination to compose for and that is just a guess, I might be wrong.

career in Hindi films,[1] and is acknowledged as one of the finest actresses of Indian cinema.[2]

Further mainstream success came with roles in a myriad of family and drama films such as Baseraa (1981), Silsila (1981), Ek Hi Bhool (1981), Jeevan Dhaara (1982), and Agar Tum Na Hote (1983).[7] During this period, she extended her work into arthouse films, a movement of neo-realist films known in India as parallel cinema, often to favourable reviews.[2] These films included Kalyug (1981), Umrao Jaan (1981), Vijeta (1982), Utsav (1984), and Ijaazat (1987). Her acclaimed portrayal of the eponymous classical courtesan in Umrao Jaan won her the National Film Award for Best Actress.[14][15] Her work during the decade included sporadic dubbing and playback singing.[16] Having credited her physical change to diet and yoga practice, she released an exercise audio, Rekha's Mind and Body Temple (1983).[17][18] A period of decline during the middle of the decade was followed by Khoon Bhari Maang,[19][7] among the first of a new trend of women-centred revenge films,[20] which starred Rekha in the role of a woman avenging her attempted murder by her husband, and earned her a second Best Actress Filmfare Award.[13][12]

Her work was much less frequent in subsequent decades. Most of her films in early 1990s mostly met with lukewarm reviews and were rejected by the audience.[21] She was cast in several parts similar to that in Khoon Bhari Maang, the great majority of which failed to leave a similar mark, except for considerable success with Phool Bane Angaray (1991).[22] In 1996, she won a third Filmfare Award, in the Best Supporting Actress category, for her negative turn of an underworld don in the action thriller Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi (1996), one of the year's highest-earning Hindi films.[13][23] She accepted parts in two controversial films: a Kama Sutra instructor in Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love (1996) and a housewife moonlighting as a prostitute in Aastha: In the Prison of Spring (1997), to critical acclaim but some public scrutiny. In the 2000s, she was praised for her supporting roles in the 2001 dramas Zubeidaa and Lajja,[13] and started playing mother roles, among which was her role in the science fiction Koi... Mil Gaya (2003) and its superhero sequel Krrish (2006). While her leading roles in the comedies Bachke Rehna Re Baba (2005) and Kudiyon Ka Hai Zamana (2006) were met with disapproval by critics,[24] her supporting part in Yatra (2006) was better reviewed.[25][26] This was followed by a long hiatus from film work, during which she appeared twice over the following decade in Sadiyaan (2010) and Super Nani

In 1990, Rekha married Delhi-based industrialist Mukesh Aggarwal. Aggarwal was a self-made entrepreneur and owner of the kitchenware brand Hotline.[168] He is believed to have had a long-standing struggle with depression and according to Rekha's biographers, she only found out about his mental health after marriage. He was introduced to Rekha through a mutual friend and fashion designer Bina Ramani who termed him Rekha's 'crazy fan'.[168] Their marriage took place on 4 March 1990, and a few months later—while she was in London—he died by suicide, after several previous attempts, leaving a note, "Don't blame anyone".[169] She was pilloried by the press at that time, a period which one journalist termed as "the deepest trough in her life."[170] Bhawana Somaaya observed the period speaking of "a strong anti-wave against the actress — some called her a witch, some a murderess," but added that soon "Rekha came out of the eclipse once again unblemished!"[171]

She was rumoured to have been married to actor Vinod Mehra in 1973, but in a 2004 television interview with Simi Garewal she denied being married to Mehra referring to him as a "well-wisher". Rekha currently lives in her Bandra home in Mumbai.

She was also famously rumoured to have been in a relationship with Amitabh Bachchan, who was married, after they first acted together in Do Anjaane, and later in Silsila.
