AR Rahman, the young music director who has consistently been making India proud, has got many awards and accolades to his credit. Now the young prodigy will be honored with the Swaralaya-Kairali-Jesudas Award for 2007 by the Kerala based Swaralaya. This was announced by the jury which comprises The Minister for Cultural Affairs MA Baby, playback singers K.P. Udayabhanu and B. Arundhathi, lyricist Poovachal Khader and litterateur Rosemary. Swaralaya, an organization established with the aim of promoting music, honors music artists every year in recognition for their outstanding performance in Indian film music by giving them awards. Veteran music director K. Raghavan will also be honored during the occasion, for his contribution to Malayalam film music. Rahman's prize comprises cash of one lakh, a citation and a statue designed by Kanayi Kunhiraman. |

Tamil superstars to shine for charity... |
A GROUP of Tamil superstars, including the "Dream Girl" of the South Indian silver screen, Sangavi, are to perform in a charity show on February 16. The Grand Tamil Cultural Extravaganza, organised by the Bahrain Tamil Sangam Group, will be held at the Indian School, Isa Town. Other well-known South Indian entertainment figures lined up for the show are playback singer K P Mohan and singer Kovai Murali. The show is being presented by Media Gate Production and Distribution Company and held under the patronage of the Information Ministry. Proceeds will go towards the Bahrain Cancer Society. Sangavi has starred in numerous films in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada. She has co-starred with some of south India's leading actors including Ajit, Vijay, Sharath Kumar, Prabhu, Karthik, Vijayakant and Abbas. K P Mohan, who last performed in Bahrain to a packed audience in November 2004, will be appearing for the fifth time with a new team of leading playback singers. Dubbed "Junior Balasubramanian", Mohan has also established himself as an actor - having starred in hit films such as Devadhai, Priyamudan, Ullasam, Boys, 12B and Chellame. Kovai Murali promises to take his audience on an enticing musical journey to the popular tunes of the past. Another singer accompanying the troupe is Ganga, who has travelled far and wide with A R Rahman's world-renowned orchestra. Her super hit song Azhagey Brahmannidam, from the movie Devadhaiyai Kandane has made her an overnight success. Singer Sudha will also perform at the event. She has numerous devotional albums and light music albums to her credit and has recently broken into Tamil film music. "Usha of Jaya TV fame will host the show," said organisers. "The three-hour entertainment is being framed to suit the moods of all ages. More than 8,000 fans are expected to attend the show, which begins at 6.30pm.
