rediff Entertainment Bureau

September 18, 2006 18:01 IST

The last year saw two great actors -- Kamal Hassan and Amitabh Bachchan -- being roped into Kannada cinema. For Hassan, it isn't unknown territory; he acted in Kannada films 18 years ago. But, it was a first for Bachchan.

Now comes the news that maestro A R Rahman has agreed to compose the score for a Kannada film to be directed by Nanjunde Gowda. The film will be produced by London-based Dr Manohar and his wife Sunanda Manohar. Currently being shot in the UK, it stars Dhyan in the lead alongside new Bangalore-based heroine Sharmeelee. Composition of the music has already begun at Rehman Studios in Chennai.

Ajith's Varalaru to open big this Deepavali

IndiaGlitz [Monday, September 18, 2006]

It's a Deepavali treat for Ajith fans. His God Father, which was lying in the cans for a very longtime will eventually hit the screens this Deepavali.

Produced by NIC Arts, the movie features Ajith in three roles for the first time and is directed by K S Ravikumar. Several financial constraints prevented the movie's release and it has been waiting for release for the past several months.

Following the State government's announcement of tax exemption for movies titled in Tamil, the producers opted for a title change and God Father has changed to Varalaru.

Now Varalaru will storm the screens in over half-a-dozen theatres in Chennai including the Sathyam Cinemas.

A R Rahman's music and presence of big names like Asin would come handy to promote the film.

Ajith is considered a safe bet in the industry considering the grand opening for his movies. He is currently acting in Aalwar.

Competing with Ajith's Varalaru, this Deepavali would be Silambarasan's Vallavan, Vijayakanth starrer Dharmapuri, Jeeva's E and Srikanth's Kizhakku Kadarkarai Salai. Sarath Kumar is planning to release his 100th venture Thalaimagan for Deepavali.

It's a hit there, what about here?

Updated: 09-29-2006 By andhracafe

The original of Nuvvu Nenu Prema starring Surya, Jyothika and Bhumika released in Chennai three weeks back and was declared a hit.

The music is scored by AR Rehman and the filmmakers think that the dubbed version might do well too. After Gazini many of Surya's movies were dubbed but none of them clicked. Hope this makes it at the box office.

Vishal-Shekhar to replace Rahman for Om Shanti Om

By IndiaFM News Bureau, October 10, 2006 - 04:33 IST

Vishal-Shekhar has replaced A R Rahman for Farah Khan's forthcoming film Om Shanti Om , which is being produced under Shah Rukh Khan's banner, Red Chillies Entertainment. It is said that Shah Rukh is not happy with the tunes that Rahman had composed. It is also believed that Rahman demanded a huge amount as his fee which director Farah refused to pay. However Rahman has a different story to say. According to him, Shah Rukh and he never had any problems regarding his compositions. The reason he opted out of this film was that Rahman wanted the music rights to stay with the Composer and the Lyricist along with the producer, something which Farah and Shah Rukh Khan didn't agree with. However, Rahman succeeded in getting a share of the publishing rights for Aamir Khan's next film, directed by Abbas Tyrewalla.

Speaking about Om Shanti Om music director Vishal Dadlani said, "Farah has approved five tunes for Om Shanti Om . We have worked with her on Jingles for the past two years so we share a great comfort level working with her. Hence, when she asked us if we would like to do the music of her next film, we agreed instantly. We are putting in our full energy in this film. We are going to create some awesome tracks, which have never been heard before." When asked about replacing A. R Rahman, Vishal said "Yes, we knew that Rahman was initially going to do the music but due to some reason the deal didn't work out. But, as you know, both I and Shekhar are big fans of Rahman ourselves and have no connection with this episode."

Global 'stand up' challenge against poverty

Posted by adminon 2006/10/13 4:26:53

New Delhi, Oct 13 (IANS) In the world's biggest symbolic event, citizens will "stand up against poverty" for a minute in the 24-hour span between Oct 15 and Oct 16 across the globe.

In India , millions of people, including school children, will stand up for 60 seconds between 10 a.m. on Oct 15 and 10 a.m. on Oct 16.

Cricketers Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, Bollywood actor Aamir Khan, music composer A.R. Rahman and lyricist Prasoon Joshi have extended their support for the cause.

The stand-up challenge, being organised by the UN to support its Millennium Development Goals (MDG), will set a Guinness record for enlisting the support of millions of people for a cause.

"All children must go to school and everyone should get drinking water. These are basic necessities and the millennium goals promise that. The stand up against poverty challenge is a great way to bring attention to the millennium goals and everyone should participate," Aamir Khan said in a press statement.

Yoga guru Swami Ramdev has been invited by the UN to attend a 'stand up' moment at Times Square in New York .

Swami Ramdev told IANS: "In this world 1,100 million people face hunger, every second child dies due to lack of health facilities, 3,000 million people live below the poverty line and the per capita income in developing countries is less than one rupee a day. You can't even buy bread in that!"

"Every sensible and knowledgeable person must stand up against poverty. In fact, it is every person's duty to do so. We cannot expect everything from the government," he added.

Rahman is expected to attend a 'stand up' moment in London. "We must all participate in the stand up challenge if we want poverty, hunger and disease to end. We must ensure that our governments deliver that," he said.

Millions of schoolchildren will join the campaign.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan will lead an assembly of 50,000 people Oct 16 at 7.30 a.m.

Approximately 100,000 members of the National Conference of Dalit Organisations from Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Pondicherry have also promised support.

The initiative will be a reminder for 189 world leaders, who agreed in 2000 to end poverty and achieve the eight MDGs. These goals range from halving extreme poverty to halting the spread of HIV/ AIDS and providing universal primary education by 2015.

"The challenge to stand up against poverty has captured the imagination of people around the world. We are standing up for the goals, we are standing up to hold leaders to their promises; we are standing up because until we meet the goals, we will not give up," said UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, in a press statement.

There's no fight with Shah Rukh: A R Rahman

Friday October 13 2006 17:52 IST

IANS

MUMBAI: Composer A R Rahman has opted out of Shah Rukh Khan's production " Om Shanti Om ", but he insists the parting is amicable and certainly not final.

"I'm not doing Farah Khan's ' Om Shanti Om '. But that doesn't mean there's any quarrel with her or with Shah Rukh who produces her film," Rahman told IANS in an interview.

"Farah and I go back a long way. We did ' Bombay Dreams ' together. In fact, I did some tunes for ' Om Shanti Om ', which Farah has now returned to me, not because she didn't like them but because we just couldn't agree on my terms."

Rahman's new policy for music composition is simple. "I just want to push for the financial rights of composers and lyricists, even producers. It's not as though I'm saying I want to be the sole proprietor of the songs I compose. But I want a share. There's nothing wrong with that. I can't run to music companies like T Series and Sa Re Ga Ma every time I need to use my own song."

Unfortunately, not too many producers in Bollywood are willing to share Rahman's demand for a share in the royalty for a song.

But Rahman holds no grudges against anyone, least of all Aamir Khan or Shah Rukh from whose productions the composer has opted out on this issue. "In fact, Shah Rukh tried his utmost to see and to put forward my point of view."

Unfortunately, T Series, the music company, which would market the music of " Om Shanti Om ", would have none of it.

Laughs Rahman. "I realise I've a huge fight though I don't see it as a fight. It's not like the British rock band Queen, which owned sole copyrights to all their songs. But I won't run to music companies in Mumbai for the rights for my songs every time I want to perform them at the concerts.

"Music companies must recognise the changing ground reality. Today the conventional outlets for music sales are drying up. Soon all music will be free while the performers and performances will be paid for."

Rahman is ready to take on the flak. "Any change is frowned at. But I'm standing up for what I think is right. Yes, producers will back out. But that's fine. This gap gives me the excuse to work on my private album. For long I've been asked why I'm not doing a non-film album. Now I've the time to do that."

What could complicate matters for Rahman in Mumbai is his selective attitude to the copyright issue. While he has chosen to assert his financial rights over Aamir and Shah Rukh, Rahman has exempted Ashutosh Gowariker's " Jodha-Akbar " from the copyright net.

"It has to be flexible. I can't draw a net on all my assignments and draw up a uniform code. At the same time I'm not insecure about my career. If I lose out on some assignments in Mumbai, I'm ready to bear with the loss."

Here are some exclusive pictures from Mani Ratnam's forthcoming film Guru … and remember you saw it first only on IndiaFM .

Check him out in his polished suit in this title role. On the right corner is him again in another look, however this time being more casual with a cap on.

In the picture in the middle we see Abhishek and none other than Mallika Sherawat on a horse carriage somewhere in Europe. This is taken from the special 'item number' song that has been picturized on Mallika. The song is the only part of the film where she will be prevalent.
