A woman stood by a window, a cup of hot coffee in her clasped hands. She observed a patch of green from her spot but was lost in thoughts. Her eyes kept on getting wet and she tried to control her emotions.
A pair of hands wrapped around her knees. Quickly she cleared her expression, smiled and turned around and bent down to a little girl who hugged her.
Massi!
The woman smiled and hugged the kid back. The girl then turned and zoomed out of the room, full of energy. The woman was now kneeling on the floor. She again got blank.
A boy, little older than the girl, entered and stood in front of her.
Massi?
She suddenly realised the child was wiping her tears. When she suddenly burst into tears she didnt know. She quickly wiped her face, looked aside and cleared her throat and then looked at the child, smiling. She held him by his shoulders.
Massi, kia huya?
The child's mispronunciation of hindi amused her. She tried to laugh and hugged him. While her face was brave, her eyes were still sad.
A woman entered the room and stood at the doorway. She observed the scene, her face showing an understanding. The woman hugging the kid suddenly noticed her. The woman at the doorway smiled.
Gunjan, are you okay?
Yes, Geet.
Gunjan got up as the kid turned around.
Geet came forward and smiled at the child.
Oi pichku, go and have your breakfast! Puchki is already at the table (bending down) and if you dont hurry, she will take all your chocolate bits from your bowl!
The boy ran, exclaiming.
Geet laughed and then turned to gunjan. Gunjan was staring at nowhere. Geet kept her hand on Gunjan's shoulder and Gunjan looked at her.
Gunjan. My dear little pipsqueak (putting her arms around gunjan, she hugged her consolingly) kab tak aisi rohte lagogi. Jab bhi kuch din aatein hain, tum itni udaas ho jaate ho...
Gunjan closed her eyes, sad but not tearful.
Geet then broke away and looked at her. Gunjan shook herself and changed her expression.
Geet cchodo na! (Took her hands) thanks! Am fine now! (She bent down to pick up her cup from the floor, smiled cheerfully and left the room)
Geet stared after her and then her eyes came to rest on the window. Beside the window was a photo. Geet sadly looked at it, and then turned to leave the room.
Her phone rang. Geet reached the lounge room and picked up the call- 'Geet maansingh khurana speaking'
