After playing the romantic lead opposite Masumeh Makhija in Vishal Bhardwaj's Maqbool, moving onto television wasn't a deliberate move for Ajay Gehi. The model-turned actor has landed the lead role in the Vinta Nanda produced Miilee premiering on Star Plus from April 4. Has it been a smooth and easy transition? "I needed a good role for myself. After Maqbool I got critical acclaim but very little work. Getting a lead role on Miilee is a huge thing," says Gehi.

If Gehi doesn't associate himself with the role he plays in Miilee then that's because, "Rahul is a rich kid who gets away with anything he does. In real life I come from a very middle-class family, and I travelled to school and college in local trains."

A Commerce graduate from H.R.College, Mumbai, Gehi started modelling during his college days. "But I got labelled as the 'funny face'. I anchored Superhit Muqabla (DD) for a year, did Kinarey Milte Nahin (B4U) and Raahein (Zee)."

Television isn't where he's likely to be "forever" as Gehi quickly points out. "Ramanji has signed me for his film, Maya Mirage. 2005 looks promising."
