01. Forced marriage
It shows us nothing more than the most desperate desire of our hearts...men have been wasted before it not knowing if what it shows it real or even possible...
- J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's stone
So was what Ragini did, when destiny brought her against the man who taught her that diabolical game in the first place. She brought him to face his deepest desire, but separated by the cold glass of rejection and accusations. His love would always be with him, but never his. And the knowledge that it was he who changed her from a soulful angel to a mere reflection of her previous form would kill him a little each day. That was the case when Sanskar was forced to marry Swara, who still viewed his love as a betrayal to their friendship. Her tears would spill out then, her anger would pour as bitter words, she would shiver, and falter in her steps...still the destiny did not give her the chance to back out. But he could not even do those things... Instead of spilling out, his tears would burn him from within, his anger would cut deep in to his conscious as he pushed it deeper and deeper down. He had to hold her from breaking, always show her there was hope, even if it was just a dream of hope...or perhaps an imagination. When Ragini was pushing her to a cage, Sankar always made sure the door was open. She could have backed out; he would have fought the world for her. But she did not, so instead he stood with her, the two of them...against the world. How beautiful is it when you reflect back to that moment, he was fulfilling his vows, even before taking them.
02. Karvachauth moments
Kitni dafe dilne kaha dil ki suni kitni dafe,
Waise to teri na mein bhi maine dhund li apani kushi
Tu jo phir haan kahen
Toh baat hongi aur hi...
Once upon a time was their first Karvachauth. And the moon witnessed a different love story bathing it's silvery rays. He was satisfied with her company, but still there were dreams, with their faint wings flattering, trying to take flight every time she would smile at him in that utterly innocent manner, when her cheeks tinted in that rosy hue, when her eyes lowered alluringly when they were close. Swara was yet unaware, that love has already started growing on her heart fields, and Sanskar was still unsure, how much deeper would he be able to dwell in to her heart, before his would broke apart. There was love, sizzling like logs that had been lit up. There were sparks whenever they shared a laugh. It's mild warmth reaching them, yet not enough to burn their doubts away. They had already accepted that each belonged to the other, but simply masked it with the safer word of friendship. One friend would fast for the other...and the other would find it completely natural friendship to return the favor. Still there were looks stolen, smiles unknowingly exchanged, hearts saying a lot when silences prevailed. How they jokingly planned their separation, how the same night, his masked slipped for a moment when he asked her was not there a possibility that she would accept the lie they were living in? The interlude of Sanskar's pain and love, as he pulled his mask back on, just to make her feel comfortable. The moon of Karvachauth which must have witness countless love stories, would have been in awe, as it peered from cloud covers.
03. Swara suspects Sanskar
"Thus with my lips have I denounced you, while my heart, bleeding within me, called you tender names.
It was love lashed by its own self that spoke. It was pride half slain that fluttered in the dust. It was my hunger for your love that raged from the housetop, while my own love, kneeling in silence, prayed your forgiveness.
-Kahil Gibran, The forerunner: His Parables and Poems
He had learned to live with her friendship, repeating to himself that she trusted him above all else. She trusted him when he did not deserve that unshakable trust after what he had done to her in his misplaced revenge. He had whipped his own soul for the pain it caused her, and the cuts healed not because she had forgiven him, but because she had trusted him after knowing his truth. But when she questioned him, his intentions and motives; simply on the basis of some misjudged evidence, something inside him broke, and the cuts reappeared and Sanskar could not swallow the bitterness anymore.
A different person would have calmly explained, tried to clarify why he had done what he did, but not someone who had shared all her battled till then. He was okay with her denying her love and friendship, but he could not take her denying her trust too. Sanskar had snapped back, bitterly, and Swara almost the same instant knew the graveness of the mistake she committed. It could have been too late in any other case. But still when he was angry, a part of him continued to love her; when she doubted him a part of her stayed bonded to him. So continued their story, the play of entangled fates.
04. Mutual confession
"Have enough courage to trust love one more time and always one more time.
-Maya Angelou
Each thought the other had given up, each thought the other would be happier without them. It was a time when the shadows of outer world was upon them, when chains of past caught hold of their dreams, when the venom of unresolved doubts slowly eat up to their love. Destiny had to intervene. Sanskar could always build his walls high, whenever he felt his conscious weakening. The same he did, when he thought he could no longer bear her friendship, when his heart desired much more. He could not take any more wounds. And distance made her realize, each day as he went a step away, deeper she fall in love with him. But the times made sure neither reached out for the other, even if the loneliness would suffocate them. She thought his lost love had returned, he though she felt nothing for him.
Still it took only a minute, a fragment of a second and a breeze of wind to break their walls down, pull their blindfolds off and shatter the chains that held them away from each other. The winds of fate coloured in the red of his love, engulfed her in that moment and his destiny found her destination. Unknowingly he had filled her maang again. And the same courage he had then, possessed both of them.
She knew it was a sign of god, that she had finally arrived where she belonged. He would never turn his back to his love, adorned in sindoor of his name. How they voiced the depth of their love, the realization that neither would survive without the other...those hugs, tearful smiles in the serene backdrop of ringing temple bells. But it was not the start of their journey; neither was the end; just a heaven midway...to cherish in memories forever.
