"Better a good journalist than a poor assassin."

When the pen was made mightier than the sword it was not done to uphold any poetic justice. The concern was to show the world that blood could be spilled without involving longer and sharper blades because a pointed one had more area covered.

Journalism became an art of divulging the truth owever bitter it was and by whatever means it can come. Although this is an idealistic definition, most loved and maybe once a reality.
The actual artistry in today's time, lies in what all can be served as the truth, so eloquently, that one would never know "the reality" in it's true form.
But like in all grand schemes, there lie a few loop holes and that is from where at times we are made aware of the "original truth."

If viewed more academically, Journalism is nothing but a work of distributing facts, analysis and real time events to the public through written, spoken or recently, electronic medium.
One is considered to be a neutral party when he/she is conveying these news to the people and letting themform their own opinions. But because the involved parties in a news are mostly corporal like all of us, neutrality is often laid to rest.

But what's more important in all of these contradictions is that Journalism, through it's activism has brought awareness among people. By converging the whole world and it's current situations to every existing human being, it keeps us informed of all that is happening and may happen around us.

It started out as a printed sheet of affairs, dating back to as late as the second century and has kept evolving since. The print media was ruled by the fluent writers, whose opinions were liberal and hard hitting, invoking in the hearts of the public a fire of wakefulness. Later radio transmissions became a rage when they set the waves in motion and like always the spoken words made a greater impact because the exact feelings were felt rather than realized, as was happening with print media.

Television however will be considered the king of all the mediums because here it was, for the first time, that one had seen the world far away from them, a world and the people they thought existed in stories told since long. The breaching of distance and the kindling of the hope that something beyond was in reach made epics in time. And when we view the present day, internet rules all. It's a combination of all the mediums. You read, listen and view anything, anywhere, at any given time. Also you can contribute and even create a news by yourself. While the earlier champions worked with a free will, internet is but a devoted servant.

But the difference ends there. The news here too is provided by humans, it is propagated by them and of course taken in by them, thus Manipulation of data and glorification of falsehood happens here as well as in all the other segments.

One cannot be too careful around something that is run by us.

In most nations, news media is under the supervision of the Governments but a few do enjoy the freedom of the press. Although those few cannot be said to have full liberty. Transparency between the news and the public is a desired wish, which is most hard to be fulfilled.

If viewed in the past, Journalism had valued the "code of ethics," where impartiality, truthfulness, objectivity, accuracy, fairness and public accountability were held up in accumulating the news. The dissemination of information was done in a manner that brought about moral change.

While we can say that not all has gone bad, there is no way one can assume that the media is feeding us everything hygienic.

The sensationalism of information has robbed Journalism from it's ethics in a substantial way
but below we give you a view of both the facets of this intriguing piece of ingenuity, without being biased. Although if we take a look at the present scenario, Satan is definitely looking pleased.

Journalism these days... what's it coming to? It's a question that everybody wants an answer to. Thanks to the various news portals in today's world, ranging from online news blogs to gossiping tabloids, Journalistsare believed to beheroes by some, while others consider themscumbags. With the growing number of news media, be it news channels in television, online websites of popular newspapers or emerging weekly or monthly magazines, it is pretty hard to differentiate between positive, truthful & accurate journalism from negative, spiced up & partial journalism. If we are to quote the definition of good journalism from the popular book "The News about the News", we can safely say,

"Good journalism does not often topple a president, but it frequently changes the lives of citizens, both grand and ordinary."

In simpler terms we can say, good journalism reflects a sense of responsibility for the public good and holds the communities together by serving the best attainable version of the truth. It provides context, attribution, credibility & transparencyinstead of creating desired political results in order to make huge profits. Good journalism involves engaging language and fluid prose, but it is not merely a well written good story. It is not necessarily important to make it to the top of the breaking news or to be one of the most shared stories on social media. Good journalism involves stories that have importance, impact, and elements of exclusivity and uniqueness; it wrestles with issues of the day, elucidates social conditions, facilitates society in finding solutions to challenges, and is independent of all forms of power. Good journalism is rational and critical; it is infused with skepticism, but not cynicism.

Although it is difficult to effectively measure such attributes of quality journalism, it should be much easier to define and identify quality journalism providers. Among this growing crowd of free-for-all, opinionated, unchecked and biased story telling that is appearing all over the globe, there are still few quality news portals that are in favor of serving good, positive & non-manipulated journalism we can turn to.

Here are few such sites for you to check out, in case this thread of ours has gotten you intrigued.

Most people know good journalism when they see it. The clarity in communication, the unbiased professionalism leaks through on its own. But for the novice and the new, naive reader, a casual reminder in how to differentiate between good and bad journalism, is more than beneficial.

As the medium of journalism has widened over the years, a cause of great concern of following the "canons" or the ethics of journalism has arisen. Non compliance to the "code of ethics" in the recent times has severely hampered the professionalism of the journalism field. Sensationalism paves way for miscommunication and biased reporting thus creating a negative impact in the public's eye. A TRUE journalist should accurately inform the public with facts and not imbibe their biased opinions on the public. Today we survive on technology that overpowers our routine life. Journalism as a medium of providing news for the society has evolved drastically. There used to be an era where people had to wait for the daily newspaper to know the happenings around the world. Now, all it takes is a small beep! on the smartphone and we have the news right on our finger tips! Very smart indeed!
Where has the development of smart phones and apps led us to?
Yes there are good aspects where the reporters have created a wave of alertness, awareness and positivity. But has it tipped the balance for a society reformation? Even if the answer is in affirmative, it gets diminished by the professional void created by the media journalism off late. Just three decades ago, television news piqued the interest of the public with their objective, qualitative, accurate and genuine reporting. Nostalgia runs deep. But unfortunately, the idiot box has reduced to just deliver idiocy 24/7 be it through regressive illogical shows or through the snippets of conspiring political agendas with spicy interludes of celebrity break ups and patch ups. More than a news provider it's become an entertainment provider on television. A recent trend has developed where a talk show runs in between the bulletin to discuss important social or economic issues. Many times, it becomes crowded by a panel of eminent spokesmen and mediators who meddle up the topic every second, not letting the relevant arguments to be heard. Needless to say the talk ends with less talk and more fight.
Reporters, journalists, and article writers used to be hidden among the identity of their name or programs earlier. There has been a reversal now. Their work hides behind the identity of their name and their popularity in social networks as this creates more news than the information they provide.

Where does this go wrong?
As per the Code of Ethics, it is mandatory to check the reliability of news which is reported by verifying with one or more sources. But the reliability falters as the news providers run to report the news rather than checking facts. Constructive reporting has turned into competitive reporting.
Another important rule to follow is that the public shouldn't be affected by reporting. In this 24/7 news service, nearly half of the day's coverage will be on the concerned people who are involved in news. The camera's focus ismore on the people than the actual events that are happening. Filling the stomach of a curious viewer becomes more important than considering the feelings of the said people who are involved in it. A little compassion and sensitivity towards individuals and their privacy would do good.
It's important NOT to create panic among public. Honest and judiciousreporting is a must. Selective reporting should be avoided. News stories of national interests should be reported with authenticity. It's mandatory to seek the public's opinion rather than giving an opportunity to a certain person to publicize his opinion. Avoiding wishy-washy journals and concentrating on truthful judicious reports will improve the reliability. Offensive words or opinions towards a certain group on the basis of religious beliefs, should be explicitly forbidden. With the advent of social networks like Facebook, blogs , Twitter and other sites, there is a need to assert the difference between aprofessional news provider and a news sharing person.

Apart from the bad phase of journalism which is explained above there are many aspects where journalists are harmed, and forced to adhere to certain groups. There might be several setbacks but genuine reporters who brave the struggles should be appreciated too.

After listing all the good and bad things, we sure know that journalism, like the two sides of a coin, has both the positive and the negative side. Journalism, nowadays, is taken as an inseparable part of any Democratic system. The media plays a vital role in the Democratic society. People majorly depend upon the press for being informed for day to day news. Journalism has even been considered to be called as the 'voice of the voiceless'.

With the evolution of technology and the internet world, the interest of the masses from print media, is fading out. With the meteoric rise of social media portals such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, it is claimed that mankind is entering a new era where news must be delivered in 140 characters or less! This however, is an unfair assessment. Newspapers, in this new age of technology, are not sure how to keep the readers interested, and are experimenting with new methods. They are working tirelessly to keep journalism alive.

However, journalism, through whatever medium it may appear as, is a prime instrument which connects people all over the globe. The press helps make people aware of the happenings all around the world.

Journalism is hailed as the fourth pillar of democracy, and without journalism, the world would be like a slab of a stone with just three pillars, collapsing every time. It has become customary for most people to sit down in their living rooms sipping coffee while reading newspapers. Some find it fulfilling to stop their work for a while and watch TV. People can't let a day go by without getting themselves updated about the happenings around themselves. No man desires to stop gaining knowledge. As people need oxygen for surviving, we need media for informative knowledge.
