Kartik Poornima e n c o m p a s s e s many legends and its origin is based upon all that has taken place in the history of m y t h o l o g y.

It is believed that Lord Karthikeya, the son of Shiva, was born on this particular day. Karthikeya is usually s y m b o l i z e d b y w e a p o n s. Being the chief of all gods, Karthikeya represents p u r i f i c a t i o n .

Furthermore, Karthikeya is always represented as being seated on a peacock.
He is seen as someone who is p e r f e c t, a n d e m b o d i e s a l l t h e virtues.

Once upon a time, the world was being ruled and devastated by a demon named T r i p u r a s u r a. He had conquered every place and defeated all the other gods. With no other way possible, L o r d M a h a d e v had to intervene and stop the menace that the demon was causing. Mahadev took on the form known as T r i p u r a n t a k a in order to defeat Tripurasura.

On this Kartik Poornima day, it is believed that Mahadev, in his Tripurantaka form, d e f e a t e d t h e g r e a t d e m o n , Tripurasaura. It is said that Lord Mahadev achieved this through the use of a single arrow alone. Thus this day was celebrated as a festival based on i l l u m i n a t i o n s as Lord Mahadev and the rest of the gods were happy with Mahadev's victory. With relations to Lord Mahadev, this day is also known as Dev-Diwali.

Kartik Poornima is also auspicious with regards to Lord Vishnu, t h e
p r e s e r v e r, as it is believed that on this day M a t s y a, Lord Vishnu's fish incarnation, one of his known d a s h a v a t a r a s(ten incarnations)
was born.

Lord Vishnu's importance with this day continues with his other incarnation, L o r d K r i s h n a. Lord Krishna and his lover Radha are believed to have danced the r a s a and Lord Krishna w o r s h i p e d Radha on this day as well.

Another belief that associates L o r d V i s h n u with Kartik Poornima is the arrival of Prabodhini Ekadashi. It is believed that with P r a b o d h i n i E k a d a s h i, the four-month period when Lord Vishnu is believed to sleep-C h a t u r m a s comes to an end. Prabodhini Ekadashi signifies the a w a k e n i n g o f t h e G o d.

Also, legends recite that, on this day, Lord Vishnu returns to his abode
V a i k u n t h a
after completing his stay in B a l i. Hence, the day is known as D e v a D i w a l i.

Kartik Poornima is also the only day of the year when L o r d B r a h m a, the Creator of the Universe, is w o r s h i p e d. In Pushkar, Rajasthan, the
P u s h k a r m e l a
which is held in honor of Lord Brahma, begins on Prabodhini Ekadashi and continues till K a r t i k P o o r n i m a.

This last day is considered the most i m p o r t a n t part of the fair.
