Tit for Tat

Pallavi looked around the kitchen. Seeing that there was no one in sight, she made her way to the kitchen. Her mission was successful. She had smartly sent Amma to her friend’s house, assigned the house help works that would keep them away from the kitchen for at least a couple of hours and busied Farhad by asking him for a detailed report of Jayati Jewels’ latest designs. The biggest hurdle of her plan was Ghamandi Rao. She had convinced him, with a combination of puppy eyes, anger and tears, to stay in the room and review the designs she made. Now, there was no one who could stop her. She rubbed her hands in excitement. Afterall Pallavi was planning this since morning and now that the plan was in action it was the time to enjoy the reward.

Pallavi, with child-like excitement, opened the freezer and began looking for the object of her interest. However, she couldn’t find it, even after searching for minutes. She closed the freezer with a bang. She would not leave the person who did this to her. Angry and upset about her now failed plan, she turned to exit the kitchen when an idea popped in her mind, “If it wasn’t there in the freezer, maybe it was kept in the fridge”. It seemed stupid to her, “What’s harm in trying though”, she thought aloud. She turned and opened the fridge only to find what she wanted right in front her. “Ice cream”, she exclaimed happily, finally finding what she wanted. “Ice cream ko fridge me kis ne rakha, I really hope yeh khane layak ho”, she spoke to herself while grabbing the container of strawberry ice cream from the fridge. Grabbing a spoon, she opened the container to get a bite of the ice cream. However, instead of ice cream, she saw chopped strawberries in the container. “Yeh kya hai”, Pallavi exclaimed in shock.

“Strawberry fruit”, Raghav said entering the kitchen and stood in front of her crossing his arms across his chest, mischief dancing in his eyes. He was tempted to give in to fulfil her wishes seeing her desperation but he quickly thrashed the thought.

“When else will I get such a chance to take my revenge”, Raghav mused.

“Vo mujhe bhi dikh raha hai. Mere ice cream ke dabbe me yeh strawberry kaise aayi?”, Pallavi asked, getting angry.

“Mai daala”, Raghav answered nonchalantly.

“Aur meri ice cream?” Pallavi asked, having a deja vu. She hoped Raghav didn’t do what she did with his whisky.

“Vo toh maine aas-paas ke baccho ko de di”, Pallavi sighed in relief for a moment but her anger returned the next moment. “How dare he give my ice cream to someone else” she thought.

“Ghamandi Rao yeh kya kiya tumne”, she yelled at him.

“Arey itna kyu bura maan raha tum, sirf ek yeh strawberry thodi hai” Raghav said while moving towards the fridge and taking three more ice cream tubs and continued, “itni saari variety di hai tumhe”, he opened the vanilla ice cream tub, “yeh banana”, to which Pallavi gasped. Ignoring her reaction he opened chocolate and red velvet ice cream tubs, “yeh chikoo and yeh tumhara favorite tazbu”, Raghav continued.

“Tazbu nahi tarbooz”, Pallavi remembered correcting him, despite her anger and surprise.

“Haan haan wahi, ab jo man karega na vo kha lena”, Raghav suggested.

“Par mera man ice cream khane ka hai, fruits nahi. Maine tum ko bola tha na Ghamandi Rao mere ice cream ke aas paas bhi nahi bhatakna. Veda manus, yeh ice creams ke tubs me fruits kaun rakhta hai”, Pallavi was seething with rage.

“Jo whisky ki bottles me green tea rakhta hai uska pati”, Raghav stated as it was the most obvious fact to which Pallavi rolled her eyes.

After a couple of exchanges of words, Pallavi was convinced that she was not going to get any ice cream. Yet she tried her last resort,

“Raghav”, she started in a tone that she knew Raghav can’t ignore, “I have had a craving for ice cream since morning, I need an ice cream now. I will just eat half a scoop. I know you won’t deny your pregnant wife”, Pallavi tried buttering him.

“Mrs. Rao”, Raghav began, “your doctor has asked you to cut down your sugar. Eating ice cream is surely not a way to do that, it spikes up your sugar really quick”, Raghav said. “Raghav, you think I don’t know”, Pallavi spat. Pallavi was extremely irritated now, first her craving for ice cream and now Raghav was getting on her nerves.

“I know Pallavi that you know and that was I planned this”, Raghav said, his calm demeanor opposite to Pallavi’s irritated one. Raghav moved towards the refrigerator, opened the freezer and took out a small steel bowl. “Yeh taste karke dekho”, Raghav offered the bowl to Pallavi. Her eyes widened for the second time as she saw the bowl containing ice cream.

“Yeh kaun si ice cream hai aur kaha se aayi?” Pallavi asked pleasantly surprised this time. Nevertheless, she took a spoonful of the dessert and ate it. “Maine khud apne hatho se banaya yeh sugar free and low carb ice cream, sirf tumhare liye. Kaisa bana hai?” Raghav asked her opinion excitedly. He had cooked something like this for the first time. He had invested time in searching for the perfect recipe, had a talk with Pallavi’s dietician and then made the ice cream last night so he could surprise Pallavi. A couple of tears rolled down Pallavi’s cheeks. “Itna bura bana hai kya jo tum ro raha hai”, Raghav attempted to humor her. “Bahut tasty hai, Raghav”, Pallavi complimented, reaching out for another spoonful. “Iss prank ke liye”, she said, pointing towards the fruits, “jao tum ko maaf kiya”, Pallavi completed haughtily. “Achha, Saree ka dukaan”, Raghav whispered huskily moving behind her and back hugging, resting his hand on her baby bump, “ab jab tum ne sab ko busy rakhne ka intezaam kar hi diya hai toh hum thoda quality time spend kar le”, as Pallavi turned around, Raghav ended his line with a flirty wink.
