Actually, there is something else here. While Karna may have always been a danveer, the obsessive aspect of it - not refusing anything asked of him after his evening prayers - wasn't a lifelong deal of his. After the Gandharva debacle, he took an Asura vrath, which included all this. The reason he took that vrath was to redeem his reputation, which had taken a nose dive when he couldn't get Dury freed, but Arjun, on Yudi's instructions, did (the fact that the Gandharvas fought Karna as an enemy and Arjun as a friend is true, but is tangential to this point, since it was pointed out that the bottom line was that Arjun succeeded where Karna failed). Had this vrath been successful, he'd have been successful in killing Arjun. Observance of this vrath included giving up meat & alcohol, never washing his feet, and not refusing anything asked of him after his evening prayers. However, this vrath was a double-edged sword in that his enemies could use it against him, since he couldn't refuse even them. That's what happened w/ Indra & Kunti. With Indra, he lost the 2 things that ensured that he couldn't be slain, and w/ Kunti, he was forced to give away his right to kill her sons. The reason he refused to give up on Arjun was that that was the reason that he was doing this vrath in the first place. Were he to give that up, continuing to follow that vrath would have been meaningless. OTOH, were he to bluntly send Kunti away w/ a flea in her ear, then the success that the vrath would have guaranteed him just wouldn't have been there. So even if Karna may have let Dury down, he may not have had a choice, since Dury did want Arjun's death from him over everything else. Had Dury bound him to a looser contract - "Hey, just kill any of the Pandavas that you can, no strings attached", Karna could have kept his kavach kundala, killed Yudisthir, never have been defeated by Arjun and probably taken his revenge on Kunti by sending Sahadev to Yamalok. Although he would have had to kill Bhima as well to make Duryodhan the eldest of the Kuru princes (not counting Karna himself as one), and given that Bhima had defeated him in the Rajasuya yagna, that may not have been possible.

Krishna already planned his death and he told Arjuna about how to kill Karna on the 14th night itself. Krishna already knew that Karna cannot be killed in a fair fight, even when he had donated his Kavach and Kundal.
Here is what Krishna tells Arjuna after Ghatotkatch was slain.
"..The man does not exist in this world that could not stay before Karna armed with that dart and looking like Kartikeya in battle. By good luck, his (natural) armour had been taken away. By good luck, his earrings also had been taken away. By good luck, his infallible dart also is now baffled, through Ghatotkacha. Clad in (natural) coat of mail and decked with his (natural) ear-rings, Karna, who had his senses under control, could singly vanquish the three worlds with the very gods. Neither Vasava, nor Varuna the lord of the waters, nor Yama, could venture to approach him. Indeed, if that bull among men had his armour and ear-rings, neither thyself, bending the Gandiva, nor myself, uplifting my discus, called Sudarsana, could vanquish him in battle. For thy good, Karna was divested of his ear-rings by Sakra with the help of an illusion. Similarly was that subjugator of hostile towns deprived of his (natural) armour. Indeed, because Karna, cutting off his (natural) armour and his brilliant car-rings, gave them unto Sakra, it is for that he came to be called Vaikartana. Karna now seems to me to be like an angry snake of virulent poison stupefied by power of incantation, or like a fire of mild flames.."
Here is what Krishna tells Arjuna to do when Karna's wheel will get sunk. Krishna planned out everything.
"..There win occur one opportunity for his slaughter. When his car-wheels will sink in the earth, availing thyself of that opportunity, thou shouldst slay him in that distressful situation. I will make thee a sign beforehand. Warned by it, thou shouldst act. The vanquisher of Vala himself, that foremost of heroes, wielding his thunder, is incapable of slaying the invincible Karna while the latter stands weapon in hand.."
