Why did Yuddishtir gamble Draupadi (who belonged to all five Pandavs) and not Devika, the wife who was solely his?

Surely if Yuddishtir still had sons and wives, this game would not have ended at Draupadi? (Or Draupadi wouldn't have been staked as she was a mutual wife)?

I've the same question as yours .. Maybe Draupadi had insulted Duryodhan that's why they wanted to take revenge from her ...
But again for me no explanation or reason can justify such a heinous act of Yudhisthir .. He gave the dogs meat and then when they relished it , such a hue and cry was made ... For me Yudi was , is and will remain the main culprit in this whole thing ... She was his wife n not a peice of commodity or property to be gambled this way ... N people still call him Dharamraj ... 😡

I think Yuddhistir made one mistake, a very big one, but we can't hold that against him forever. It shows how bad gambling is. A vice that can make even the righteous do heinous things.

I know Duryodhan hated Draupadi. I am just curious why Yuddhistir chose her, when she wasn't just his, but he did had a wife who WAS just his.

Most of the characters in Mahabharat possessed a misguided sense of Dharma!

Firstly, all the wealth Yuddhishtir possessed doesn't belong to him!Its the wealth of his people, prosperity of the kingdom which solely belongs to his subjects. It was to be used for their development. How can Yuddhishtir put a stake of all the wealth that doesn't belong to him!?How can he stake his brothers who belong to their parents in the first place!?

None of the Kaurava elders, neither the people of his Kingdom nor the high learned souls were angry with him!?We don't even find Kunti saying anything to Yuddhishtir. It is highly shocking to see the other Pandava brothers sitting silently when he was about to stake Draupadi!

Almost in every chapter of Mahabharat Yuddhishtir was praised as Lord of Dharma,a virtous soul with pure conduct! But I don't understand this description and in what sense it applies to him!?

The reason Draupadi was staked was not because Yudhisthir randomly chose her over his other wives. Shakuni told him to stake her. It was pre-decided by Duryodhan that Draupadi would be staked so that he could get his revenge on her for laughing at him in the maya sabha at Indraprastha.

Vaisampayana continued,--"Having said this, Sakuni, well-skilled at dice, spoke unto all the brave kings present there of his having won, one after another, all the Pandavas. The son of Suvala then, addressing Yudhishthira said,--'O king, there is still one stake dear to thee that is still unwon. Stake thou Krishna, the princess of Panchala. By her, win thyself back.'

This question is very controversial...whether he'd have staked his wife Devika in place of Draupadi or not, is an arguable point.
But the main question striking my mind is...how could he stake her when he had lost his right on himself even! Didn't he understand such a petite thing being a Dharmaraja! Yudhisthira was not a kid and must have been well aware of the later consequences...yet he staked her.

yudi had lost himself n his bros.so i think their wifes would have automatically become kaurava slave.but still i think dury was more interested in draupadi bc she was their symbol of pride n unity.n humiliating her would always be a sore spot for them. but nothing justifies yudi action. i dont know much abt gambling but i think excitement ( i dont know suitable word) of gambling prevented yudi from seeing right or wrong.

my post limit is up hence i am adding more here. yudi thought "may be" he will win this. this "may be " dillema of a gambler led to his downfall.

Agreed.. The wives of respective Pandavas were slaves of Duryodhan by the time their husbands became slaves..

Yudishtar did not have the sole right to stake his 'wife' Draupadi she being a common wife... Sadly this argument can not release her from slavery because she was already a slave when her husbands became slaves.. Technically the last round of game is void.. Yudi can just react in two ways when Shakuni proposed.. Either admit that Draupadi was already a slave or accept the proposal and play.. He chose the second probably because the offer was huge.. he can get everything back.. that should have amused him..

Another argument is, did Yudi 'still' have the right to stake his brothers as he has already lost all his citizens (except Brahmins) in the game? They were also citizens weren't they?

PS: I had to become a Dwapara yuga creature to write this 😆

Wasn't he aware of the fact that Shakuni can't lose! 😆

Indeed Duryodhan, Dusshasan and Shakuni were guilty...but their guilt can't justify Yudhisthira's action.
