Re: Shakuni's discussions w/ Gandhari re: Shikhandi, as usual, the CVs got something wrong.
Shikhandi was not immortal - the only thing about him was that he was destined to be the cause of Bheeshma's death (Shikhandi was in fact killed by Ashwatthama immediately after the latter had killed Draupadi's 5 sons). That's all that mattered here. Incidentally, while it's nice of them to have introduced Shikhandini, I'm not getting the point, since Bheeshma doesn't appear here @ all.In fact, after this defeat, Drupada did an yagna for a son to kill Drona. Reason? He had 2 sons Satrajit & Vikra, but neither were considered good enough to kill Drona: in fact, in the war, both were killed by him. Shikhandi too was not considered adequate, and therefore, the yagna to get Dhrishtadyumna was performed. Also, since Shikhandi was still Shikhandini, she wouldn't have been given this role, far less be senapati. It was only after her transformation into a man that she becomes a senapati in her own right, and was one of the 7 Pandava akshauni commanders.
