This folks, is the bollywood version of Mahabharat, which surely would score points for grandeur, hero centricity and over-dramatized schism, but not for how best the epic has been adapted on screen.

I was glad to find this thread - I had my share of venting to do as well.

Exactly, why is Arjun leading Team Pandav? How will they be able to justify Arjun's compliance with Yudhistar during Draupadi's disrobing?

Also Subhadra and Arjun do not meet until after his marriage to Draupadi and during Arjun's self-imposed banishment for 12 years because he walked in on the privacy of Yudhistar and Draupadi. In fact weren't their unfamiliarity, until that time, the very reason why Arjun guises as a saint to go meet her in the gardens? So, why is Subhadra in Hastinapur now?

No point crying over spilt milk. However, I believe its best if they could put up a disclaimer that the show is a fictional on-screen adaptaion and not a rendering of the original epic, to the benefits of those first-time viewers.

This Kanyawaas thing is total rubbish

there was no such thing as kanyawaas in those days

males were sent to gurukul after thread ceremony after their eigth year and they remained there for 12 years

but females got all the training by private tutors at the palaces only

they learnt painting , mastering lanuages , horse riding , dance , warfare if they were interested in it there only

Madri , Kaikeyi etc showed keen interest in warfare

Gargi learnt the scriptures

what is Dushala telling i met Subhadra at kanyawaas

were girls even sent out to live in those days

stupid CVs

they r just making up words by putting old hindi words together

'kanyawaas' indeed

When you talk of story distortion, you must be sure of what the original is. The MB has been around for a very long time now, and has seen many additions and interpolations to it over generations. Traditionally, there have been different versions of the epic in different places in India.
The critical edition of the Mahabharat compiled by the Bhandarkar Institute in Pune, is believed by many scholars to be the closest to what might have been the original. (i.e minus all the later additions and interpolations to it over many centuries ) Nobody can conclusively say that it is indeed the original. What researchers basically did to compile this version was that they went through all existing versions of the epic (the epic varies from region to region), looked for themes common to all of them, armed with their knowledge of our history. I have read that even if you read the Sanskrit text, you will find inconsistencies within its narrative.

What Star Plus is doing is showing their own interpretation of the epic. One may or may not agree with it, but cannot accuse it of misrepresentation due to the above reasons. I believe there is a disclaimer at the start of the show. I do not know this for sure as I have no access to Star Plus on TV.

Nowadays, when I watch Mahabharat it is only for entertainment. The essence of the show has been lost ever since the Pandavas and Kauravas grew up.

Personally, my favorite phase of the show was when Pandu reigned as King of Hastinapur, as well as the Pandavas and Kauravas as children. The characterization of the child Kurus was far better than the adults. The distortions happening to the story now have completely put me off!

At the end of the day, the mahabharat is only a poem - the longest one in the world. That said, you still have to draw a line somewhere and have a baseline, however less than perfect it may be. So, let's go with the critical edition compiled by the Bhandarkar institute for now. I agree that character motivations could entirely be subjective - open to many interpretations - but the actual accounting of the plot line is not.

Why did Kunti go to Karna to reveal his lineage only just before the war and not earlier? - Every reader is unrestricted to imagine and formulate the why.

But its not acceptable, if I move this incident to the time in the story when the Padavas haven't left for the exile.

Such is my qualms with the part where they introduced Subhadra to Arjun in Hastinapur. And also about the part where Drona agrees to bring down rubble on Arjuna to showcase his disciple's quickness of mind and skill. Thus, in my opinion, the Star Plus version is a fictional adaptation.
