The day two people unite and take a vow to be with each other till death do them apart, is a momentous occasion that must be celebrated. It is more than just ceremonial, it is the union of two souls, forever bound by their undying love and commitment to each other. For most it is a life altering moment for the better and this day should be celebrated as long as the couple is still together. Or so Madhu thought, as she angrily sulked and sipped on a cup of latte. After the start of the day that she has had, there was only one thing left for her to do, to escape before she committed a crime and strangled her dearest pati to death.
She had bundled up 3 year old Arjun and 5 month old Vibha in warm, winter clothes and carried them into her new, red Cayenne Porsche that RK had insisted on purchasing for her. Madhu had strapped them into each of their respective car seats. Though car seats are not required in India, RK had them imported from Germany, not willing to take any risk with their safety. She loves his overprotective nature, the love and concern he has for all of their safety, including hers but Madhu is too piqued to give him much credit.
Madhu looked around the small, cozy caf and her keen, observant eyes notice two young couples, canoodling with each other, happily ignorant of the world around them. She snorted at their oblivious bliss. It was tempting to march over to the young lovers and take the young ladies aside to have a talk. They should enjoy all the romance now because once they get married, their husbands will forget to romance them, will take them for granted and most importantly they will forget their anniversary!
As she sipped on the last drop of her coffee, Madhu stared contentedly at her babies, taking a nap in their stroller. Most days, it's hard for her to handle hyper, needy and jealous Arjun along with Vibha. The constant crying and demanding, always takes a toll on her. But when they are quiet, as they are now, she can appreciate her babies. They are her gift that keeps giving, even though occasionally, they give her a headache, backache and all sorts of other aches. She loves them with all of her heart and their daddy too.
Madhu sighed in disappointment. Today is their 4th wedding anniversary and RK had forgotten to wish her. Instead he had literally ran out of the house without even giving her a glance. She doesn't need gifts to celebrate a day that she still considers the most important day of her life. She doesn't even need a card. All she wants is for her dearest pati to acknowledge their anniversary as the day she turned him from a caveman to a gentleman. That's all. Well RK has to be very affectionate too but at least Madhu thought with a frown, she is not asking for anything materialistic. Being affectionate just comes as being part of the job description of being a husband!
Two loud, distinctive cries pierce the serene atmosphere and earned Madhu angry glares from occupants for the disturbance. With an apologetic smile, she quickly hailed for the server to take her card and clear the tab. While she waited to get her credit card back, Madhu gave Vibha her favorite teething toy to gnaw on to sooth her pain. She also gave Arjun his favorite snack, gold fish. But in a petulant fit, much like the kind his father used to throw at the beginning of their marriage, he thrashed his tiny hands onto the open bowl in an angry howl. The golden fishes went flying out and scattered all over the floor, much to Madhu's embarrassment. After directing a stern glance at Arjun, she started to bend down to clean up the mess when the server returned with the card and a dustpan. With a profuse apology and a generous tip, she gathered up her noisy, whiny, crying babies and practically ran to her car. She didn't want to attract any more attention and tempt the serene coffee shoppers to fit muzzles around their snouts.
As she drove back home, Madhu thought, melancholically, that she will be greeted with an empty home as Radhaji had decided to visit a friend and RK had escaped early in the morning for work that could have easily waited. She is going to be greeted with loneliness because no one seems to understand and cater to her needs.
Balancing both kids in one arm, she managed to open the front door. She didn't want to ring the bell and disturb Patil and Mangesh. Plus opening the door on her own just makes her feel independent, like a big girl. Much to her surprise, Patil and Mangesh stood there, awaiting their return, with big, toothy grins. She glared at them suspiciously; silently pondering about their unusually cheerful demeanor.
Suspecting the reason Patil and Mangesh are loitering about could be convoluted, just like their Chief, Madhu decided that she is just going to ignore them. She is exhausted; the sooner she can get past the grinning duo, the more quickly she can go up to her room and attempt to take a much deserved nap. Attempt being the operative word as Arjun will soon start demanding she play with him and Vibha will soon add on and demand that she be fed. Whoever said parenting, MOTHERHOOD, is easy should be drawn and quartered!
As she walked past the grinning duo, they discreetly coughed to capture her attention. Inwardly sighing, Madhu slowly turned around, ignoring Arjun's insistent tug on her hair as he blabbered on and on about his favorite toy, Thomas the Train. Patil stepped forward and politely explained that, per their Chief's orders, they are to take the children off her hands for the whole day so she can get a much deserved break.
Eyes stung with tears, Madhu smiled happily, basking in RK's sweet gesture, she forgave his forgetfulness. She handed over Arjun and Vibha to Patil and Mangesh's outstretched arms and sprinted up the stairs. Discarding her purse carelessly on to the dresser, she crawled on to the bed and sighed contentedly. It has been ages since she last had a good few hours of sleep. Snuggling deep into her pillow, her eyes shot open at the touch of paper on her skin. She sat up and picked up the folded note. Madhu unfolded the paper and took note of the bold script as a smile graced her lips.
Happy Anniversary Biwi.
Yes, contrary to what you have been thinking today, I do remember that today is our fourth anniversary. How can I forget the day you decided to give me a second chance and got married to me again? Me. The kameena who used to take great pleasure in making you suffer. Yet you never gave up on me. You persisted and chipped away at the stone that was my heart and made it alive again even when I was bleeding yours dry. Biwi you turned me from a heartless beast into one of the happiest man that I am today. You think I would forget the day you truly became mine, mind, body and soul? Never!
Now you must be wondering why I didn't wish you this morning and I have two reasons for taking such a bold decision that I knew could quite possibly lead to bodily injury. First reason being, it's rather fun to rile you up. Your nose turns red and your eyes spit fire, making you look outrageously beautiful, sexy even. Biwi you're quite sexy in your angry avatar though I don't quite relish the idea of being murdered in my sleep. I hope with the receipt of this letter, I have averted any murderous plans you have made thus far.
My second reason is more sentimental. I wanted to surprise you sweetheart. Not only are you the best biwi a man can ask for but you are also an exceptionally loving and wonderful mother to our beautiful children. You anticipate our needs even before we realize it and take care of us so well that we would be nothing without you. Rishabh Kundra, your pati, not the Superstar RK, would be nothing without his biwi. At times I forget to even acknowledge all that you do for us but always know that I appreciate it and love you for it. So biwi I decided that surprising you is the best way to go, though I didn't last long. Hence I had Bittuji deliver this letter as I did not wish for my biwi to remain upset and angry for too long.
I asked Patil and Mangesh to take Arjun and Vibha off your hands for the day because I know taking care of two young children all day long, day in and out, can be very taxing. Now that the brats are out of your hands, enjoy taking a few hours of a most well deserved nap. In 4 hours, Trishna will spirit you away to the spa to do all the girly things that you ladies like to enjoy as well as get a message. By the way, make sure you ask for a female masseuse because no male is allowed to touch my biwi even if it is in a strictly professional nature. Can't have a pervert feeling up my biwi!
I regret that I can't spend the whole day with you on the anniversary of one of the most important days of my life. As a producer and an actor, you know I have to shoulder a lot of responsibilities and some are just plain unavoidable. I know you would understand and trust that if I could have rescheduled it all that I had to do today that I would have done it.
But don't worry biwi. Tonight and for the next one week, I am all yours. If you are unable to contain your curiosity biwi, you will find a new dress in my favorite color, yellow, hanging on your side of the closet. Please wear it tonight because you and I are going on a long, overdue date. Also note that there are two packed luggage in the closet. Maa is coming tonight to take care of Arjun and Vibha because you and I are going on a trip, the destination will remain a surprise till we get there. I didn't want to tell you about the trip at all on this note but dare I forget to pack any of your essentials, then instead of enjoying our second honeymoon, I would be nursing a black eye. So please make sure I got everything.
Now enjoy your nap biwi because you won't get much sleep for the next one week. Ahaan! See you this evening.
Love you always,
Your Pati, RK
She hugged the letter close to her chest as silent tears of joy cascaded down her face. True to the nickname she has earned as a child, Glycerine, Madhu can't help but express her emotions, be it joy or sadness or anything else in between, through her tears. She thought about RK and what he would say if he saw her tears. He would insist that at with the rate of her tear falls, she would flood all of Mumbai and he would be poor as a church mouse with all the excise tax he would be charged for wasting precious commodity, water. Madhu chuckled softly as she wiped away the remnants of her tears. What she had initially thought was a bad day is turning out to be amazing, almost on par with the best day of her life. Her pati, her Rishabh, known as Superstar RK for the rest of the world, may be a kameena, but he is hers. Tedha hai par mera hai, Madhu thought fondly, that's her husband, Rishabh Kundra. She closed her eyes with a soft smile; despite the occasional frustration and the ups and downs, life, she thinks, no, she knows is very good and she wouldn't change a single thing, least of all her husband.
