delivering memorable love stories
on small screen. If you think romance
can be sold off only on big screen,
then think twice because the small
screen is no less in flaunting sizzling
chemistry between lead couples of
shows. Let's be a bit practical here.
Yes, our shows do cash in on
romance but aren't there some
cliched things in every love story
that the creatives put in and the
viewers demand as well? On Indian
television, the challenge is not to
make something different but to
create the same things over and
over again with a different approach.
The competition really lies on the
fact about whose story telling is the
best not that whose story is the best,
as mostly the story is always the
same!
Just like the story tellers, the
viewers also have become too
accustomed to the repeated
romantic scenes. Just when a certain
love story gains some momentum,
even the viewers start their demand
for the long awaited confessions,
rain romance, consummation, dream
wedding and what not. Once, I was
told by someone, "You search for
logic in Indian shows? Well, I watch
them for the lead actors' amazing
chemistry!". Now if that's one strong
point of Indian TV's love stories then
let us take a look at the most cliched
things that have always been a part
of almost every love story on Indian
Television.
The Rain Romance
Rain is an integral part of every
romance on small screen. Makers and
creatives are also very much aware
that at some point of time, the
viewers always get eager to watch a
rain sequence with the leads in the
show. The hero and the heroine get
drenched in the rain and then to
whatever it leads to, confession,
intense moments, awkwardness or
realisation of love, the scene
becomes completely aesthetic.
Unwanted Falls
The heroine falls and the hero
catches - that's the law of gravity
each serial on television follows.
There's one famous saying, "Gravity
should not always be held
responsible for people falling",
because as per the love laws of
television, you are supposed to fall
only to witness yourself held within
a pair of strong arms.
Carrying The Heroine In Arms
The hero is incomplete if he doesn't
carry the heroine in his arms. Or let's
put it this way that the love story
doesn't find its ultimate culmination
until the female lead is picked up by
the male lead. With all probability,
you won't find any single romantic
show on TV where the heroes didn't
have to pick up the heroine. Well, it's
god for our television actors,
especially for those who often miss
out on their gym classes due to the
hectic schedules!
An Erotic Consummation
A dreamy consummation is the last
wish of the viewers from a television
love story. Now, this is not big
screen, hence, it is a bit difficult to go
wild on small screen like we often
see in films. But one credit we will
have to give the creatives of Indian
television along with the DOPs
(Director of Photography). They
exactly know how to create the most
erotic moment on screen while
keeping the hero and the heroine
meters apart from each other. You
really do not kiss on screen but it's
the camera angle that makes all the
difference. Indian television's
consummation sequences are like,
kuch nahi dikhaake bhi sab kuch
dikhaa diya'. It gives you the feeling
of that eroticism which one might
find in those Victorian Age English
novels.
A Dramatic Confession
Love remains on the air yet the
words don't get uttered. In every
television show there are mainly
four steps that are followed while
narrating any love story;
Realisation
Confession
Expression
Consummation
Each track of a show leads to either
of the above conclusions which
ultimately becomes the climax of
any particular track. Confession is
just another turn in love stories and
often fans eagerly wait for a
confession and to satisfy their
demands, CVs also end up giving
very dramatic confessions of love on
screen.

The Dream Wedding
Weddings are always supposed to be
lavish and royal on Indian television.
Even if the show fails to earn
expected TRPs throughout its run,
you can have full faith on your
wedding track to give you back the
flourishing numbers. Most of the
shows on television end up getting
heavy TRPs during their wedding
track. And never ever any marriage
can happen without the pinch of
excessive drama. A wedding
sequence would always have some
people who would be there
conspiring about how to spoil the
marriage ceremony and some other
people who always usually turn a
blind eye to the conspiracies until
the last moment appears and finally
we will have the love birds, who are
so very much deeply in love that
they care about nothing except the
two of them getting married.
