Unfulfilled Dreams

Author's Note: I had this idea sometime ago and I wrote it. It's finally decent enough to be posted. Enjoy!

We all dream. Dreams give us hope, a purpose to reach our goals but what if those dreams become a puzzle that you couldn't solve? What if the two stars in your dreams that you are chasing become the anchors that weigh you down but also the anchors that lift you up? Madhubala Devkinandan has had 3 constant companions since her birth; her mor pankh and the two stars she has been chasing ever since she could remember in her dreams. In her dream world the two stars are her constant companions. The two stars had taken the place of her deceased parents in her dream world; her longings and her dreams were fulfilled by those two non faced stars. The two stars filled the void left by her parents in her life. Soon enough the two stars represented her lost parents as she passed mile markers in her life. Madhu's dreams always surrounded the what-ifs in her life and imagined how life would have been different if her parents were still alive. She always wonders how her birthdays would have been celebrated. Would her mom make her favorite dishes while her Dad bought all of her favorite things? Her Dad would teach her how to ride a bike but when she would fall, her Mom would kiss her boo boo and make it all better; then Dad would carry her around on his shoulders. He would play horsey and house with her. He would be the first man she would love. Mom would teach her how to wear a saree. She imagined her parents cheering for her as she performs in school competitions. She could imagine them beaming with pride as she achieves different stages of her academic life. The thought of her love life and her parents together always made Madhu chuckle. She could imagine her Dad being dead set against her seeing any boy but at the same time she can see him going up against her mom to let her go on a date. Oh, her Mom would never ever let her go on a date but wondered if she would mellow with Dad convincing her? Madhu knew the day she met the man she would marry, her mother would be the first to know about him. She would always be her Daddy's little girl and she didn't think he would handle it well seeing her become someone else's. Madhu imagines her wedding to be grand affair; her parents wouldn't leave a stone unturned to make her wedding an event to remember. She imagines her mother dancing at her wedding, then dressing her up as a bride. She imagines her father's eyes filling up with tears as he puts her hand in that of her husband's when he gives her away. She could see her father consoling her mother during her bidaii but then she knows he would fall apart alone later. Madhu had dreamt much of her life with her parents while she slept as those two stars guided her throughout her life. The two stars became her parents and in a way maybe it wasn't so odd, may be her dead parents had become stars to be with their daughter in a different form, may be in dreams and at night but with her always to guide her, to let her know she was, is and always will be loved by them.

I love it! I too felt the stars in Madhu's dreams were her parents. You described it beautifully.

Thank you! There were always only 2 starts so it had to be her parents. 😊
