😛 ya i am kind of a silent reader! Not anymore
Now i try to comment everytime i read a story! This part was amazing madhu's confession seemed so pretty like she is no more bound to the formalitiesAah! She warned him! I loved that line!
Chapter 5
Rishabh Moham Kundra, the benevolent, knew he would not get much sleep tonight. He was burning the midnight oil tonight like most other nights of diplomatic urgency but the bed right next to his study seemed especially farther tonight.
"I think I am in love with you", her honey dipped words were running on replay in his head.
His bloodshot eyes could hardly focus on the piles of paper in from of him. If his lids shut for a minute he was certain he would taste the cotton fabric of her scarf and soft lips hidden from touch. He thought many times of checking up on her but abstained due one excuse or another. The clock ticked one and his heart raced now more than ever. This was her usual bedtime he'd heard from here and there. Would she be able to sleep comfortably? Or was she tossing in her bed with his picture in her hand? The latter was too childish so he restrained his thoughts and slapped his cheeks for good measure.
A knock on the door interrupted his musings. This was unusual for the palace. If he had guests, they were announced before entry and if something was amiss, one of his informers would come whisper in his ear. But neither happened. A simple knock, a minute of silence, and then a slender figure tiptoed in from behind the study doors.
The queen was still dressed in the same clothes as the afternoon, only the wear was apparent in the ruffles of her hair. It was no longer in a pony tail but tightly contained in an uneven top knot with baby hairs sticking out from either temple. The tee came half untucked presumably from all the running around the queen did earlier. But that wasn't the strange part of her appearance. Rather, what amazed Rishabh was that the always sophisticated queen walked in barefoot, no jacket in sight despite the freezing temperatures. He wanted to scold her for the flushed red cheeks, for being so foolish as to forget protection from the cold but that would mean he cared and he did not wish to give an already crazy woman more ideas.
"What brings you here?" he asked in a tone as cold as the weather outside.
"I wanted to see your face". She gave a straight answer.
"I am the ruler of this country, I don't have time for your antics so get lost, why don't you?"
"Aah, I think I can live now. Earlier, when you left me alone at the dinner table I thought I was going to die then and there. But now that I have seen what a beauty you are, I will survive".
"Don't bother me this way again", he turned away from her but she moved around to look up at him again.
"Why? I told you before I love you. So, from now on, I am going to do whatever my heart wants. I want to see you, eat with you, laugh with you, live with you so my honey should accept my nature". Her request was returned with a giant frown.
"Honey? As if. Madam queen, have you any pride?"
"Yes. Of course I do. You have no idea how proud a woman I am. But I like to hold on to my pride, I don't give it away to just any person. You must be a really special man to me seeing as I am letting go of my pride this easily".
"Are you admitting that you have no shame when it comes to me?" he suddenly felt like a deer in the headlights.
"Isn't that was being in love means?"
Rishabh's patience was running low now.
"Madhubala please leave before I explode on you"
"You look especially pretty when you're angry", she rested her chin on her palms and stared at him doe eyed.
"Shut up!" was what he said but all he could think of was why she called him beautiful and not handsome. He finally decided he should go easy on the shaving for a few days to show her his manly side.
"Don't be like that, my king", she dropped all her weight on the floor like a child ready to throw a tantrum.
"Are you really the strong willed, intelligent woman I married? How could you dissolve into a pathetic filmy girl overnight?"
"I am stubborn and you know already I can endure a lot but, there are times when even this rock can hurt. So, treat me well hubby. I will be crying alone a lot from now on". The queen held back her tears and pointed to the ipad in her backpack. "Actually, I had something to confirm with you as well".
The king rolled his eyes, pulling his guard back up. "Now we're getting to the meat of the problem".
"What do you think I did before I married you?"
"Okay may be not", all the excitement from seeing the complicated looking spreadsheet disappeared with her seemingly unimportant words. "I don't know. Some boring desk job in an embassy. A diplomat somewhere?"
"Wrong. I was a military analyst. Even now, the defense analysis I do is my yin to your policy yang".
"Your point is?"
"I was doing the boring desk job as you call it and come across something really interesting".
Rishabh's curiosity piqued.
"It's about the late king's death".
"Continue", the king gave his stamp of approval as he offered his sincere attention to the queen for the first time.
"Twenty one days before his majesty's death, 18 million dollars were deposited into twelve secure Swiss bank accounts. This could have been a routine transaction but what puts it out of the ordinary is that the exact same accounts were used to withdraw all the money on the day of the king's death. And the day my father was poisoned, six other accounts were activated and used to deposit and promptly withdraw $18 million each. Interestingly, this pattern is very similar to what happened during the late king's failed assassination attempta seven years ago. The money was deposited twenty one days before the incident but the king lived and my mother was poisoned instead so I am assuming that is the reason the money was never withdrawn".
"Madhubala ji, are you a conspiracy theorist?" Rishabh had never looked this angry in a long time.
"My lord", Madhu understood the seriousness of the situation and switched roles sitting up straight like a loyal subject.
"How can you throw around your words so carelessly when what you are saying will make our nation descend into chaos?"
Madhu bit her lip and listened helplessly as each of Rishabh's words cut her like a knife.
"I was in the wrong your majesty", she grabbed hold of the ipad. "I will let you get back to work".
