Chapter 14 - Affected
"Well well if isn't Madhu Malik?"
I looked ahead and watched as Ryan walked out from behind the bar. "Hey Ryan"
"The least you could do if offer me a smile" he spoke as he approached us.
"Hey man" Tyler held out his hand and patted Ryan's back. "Thanks for the help"
"No worries, it'll be a pleasure working with Madhu especially considering how she hates me so much"
"I don't hate you" I countered back.
"Sure you don't" he rolled his eyes.
"Well you were a bit of a dick head back in the days" I shrugged.
He shook his head at me chuckling. "I see you haven't changed a bit at all"
"Why should I? I love myself too much to change for anyone else" I replied back.
"Anyways you two can carry on with your day but I've got work to do" Tyler intervened. "I'll see you tonight" he hugged me then walked out the doors leaving me with Ryan.
"Ready for your first day Malik?" Ryan questioned.
"Yep"
"Alrighty. Let's get you familiar with the bar" he walked to the bar gesturing me to follow.
Ryan then showed me how pour drinks, how to make simple drinks, which glasses is used for which drink and so on.
By 4 in the afternoon I had learnt quite a bit and was quite excited with my first shift ever, we had another 2 more staff who were the same shift. One of them was called Nicky and the other man working with us was Craig. Both were friendly and Craig was the epitome of hotness. Damn his jeans riding low on his hips was quite a sight, his t-shirt hugging his chest was another treat for my eyes, I couldn't help but grab an eyeful of him whilst we got to know each other a little before the bar opened. Nicky was quite pretty and lean, her boyfriend Edward worked as the bouncer for the bar in the evenings.
Craig flirted with both of us which got tips coming in with our banter, he caught eyes of the women from the bar pulling in more customers. Nicky and me weren't doing so bad ourselves, with black shorts on and a black tank top we got tips coming in as well.
Rishabh
I continued to glance at my watch as I headed towards Ayaan's school to pick him up, it was time for him to come home. I sighed in relief as I parked up at the curb and noted the other parents waiting for their kids to come out as well.
I walked out and stood at a considerable distance so I could see him when he came out as well not be in the way, I turned away as my phone rung and picked it up.
"Yeah?"
"Hi bhai, hows Ayaan?" Annie questioned.
"You must really be enjoying this holiday of yours that you hadn't called till now" I retorted back, still angry at her for suddenly thumping Ayaan on me, though I hadn't minded afterwards, the shock of having to look after him all by myself was quite... well a shock.
"I really hope you're treating Ayaan well bhai, he's your responsibility so its best if you pick yourself up and look after your son"
"That is what I'm doing"
"Now" she completed.
"Look" I casted a glance over my shoulder to see whether he'd been let out or not, seeing the doors hadn't opened I walked down a litter further and continued. "You knew the state I was in, I wasn't clear and didn't recognize my responsibility" I responded.
"Bhai" she sighed heavily. I knew she was in deep thought or something. "You need to, not only do your responsibility but you need to build a relationship with Ayaan. He didn't only lose his mother but he also lost his father" she replied.
I thought back to the days I treated Ayaan, I neglected my own child. "I will" I muttered softly and turned around to see the kids padding out excitedly.
"Listen I've got to go, Ayaan is just coming out of his class"
"Alright. I'll call later on, I want to talk to him tonight" she replied.
I bid her bye and cut the call walking towards Ayaan who was walking out slowly.
"Ayaan" I called getting his attention, he smiled brightly and rushed towards me.
I lifted him as he came before me, he let out a squeal wrapping his arms around my neck.
"You had a nice day?" I questioned heading back to the car with him.
He nodded. "We painted and read a story" he responded.
"What would you like to eat?" I asked opening the door and helped him in then buckled his seatbelt for him.
"Chips" He replied back. "C..Can we go park again?" he asked me.
"Not today papa" I ruffled his hair. "You could come to office and play games on the computer okay?"
He nodded though was a little disappointed by the looks of it, but I couldn't even cancel the two meetings I had tonight, with the clients in Delhi for only tonight, I had to go through with it.
Madhu
"Yes what would you like?" I asked the customer who walked to the bar.
"Stout" he replied gliding his gaze over at my chest and looked back at my face with a smirk.
I smiled and grabbed a glass mentally shaking my head. Seriously men...
"Here you go" I passed his dark ale to him and took the note he offered and returned his change back to him.
"Thanks darling" he winked letting his fingers graze my hand as he took the change.
"So what's your name? haven't seen you here before?" he took a long pull of his drink and looked back at me with a hearty smile.
"Are you going to pay me for losing my customer?" I questioned pointing to the customer beside him who was waiting.
"Well..." he looked stunned to reply, probably because he hadn't received a response like mine.
"Then you take your seat, I've got others to serve" I rolled my eyes and turned to the next person.
"What would you like?" I smiled brightly not wanting to lose this customer knowing he'd just seen me wave away a customer for indirectly pull me in.
"Shot of whisky" he responded taking his wallet out.
"Hey you're on" Craig held me from my shoulder as he returned from his break.
"Oh thanks" I sighed in relief heading to the back for my break. I walked into the room and settled on the couch pulling out my phone and saw numerous messages from Tyler and some from Anne.
I dialled Anne first wanting to know why she'd called.
"Hey, you called?"
"Yeah. Your mom wanted to speak to you"
"Oh alright"
"Madhu" I heard my mother speak.
"Hey mom"
"What are you doing? We called so many times" she chided almost as if about to burst out crying.
"Yeah about that, I'm working" I responded.
"You're working? Why are you working for?" she questioned.
"Mom I've got to survive so I need the money" I responded back.
"But when I'm here why do you need to work" she asked.
"Mom you're not working so I doubt you're making money" I chuckled at her response.
"Well I don't need to work Madhu. I've got money"
"What do you mean you got money mom?" I straightened on the couch.
"Your dad's insurance. They transferred his insurance in my name" she informed me.
"Oh... Well he's your husband and its your money" I replied back. "I don't want anything of his"
"But Madhu... you deserve this money for what he put you through" she replied back.
"Mom I'll talk to you later about this okay? I gotta go" I glanced at the clock noting I only had another 5 minutes left and still had to respond back to Tyler. Once I bid bye to her, I checked the messages Tyler sent.
1 - Hey babe, hows it going?
2 - You working already?
3 -What the f**k answer your phone? I'm dying here, Have you Ryan already?
4 - I'm going to kill you tonight
5- So not cool babe, I'm working up a sweat here. Worried for you x
I couldn't continue to read through his texts anymore, I couldn't help but smile foolishly noting how worried he must be, I dialled his number right away.
"Oh thank God. You're alive" he sighed in relief as he picked up.
"Yeah" I chuckled. "Anyways would love to fill you in on my day but babe I've gotta get back in like 2 minutes" I informed him.
"Alright, I'll let you go but I'm coming down tonight, we'll go home together"
"Okay, will be waiting. See ya"
"Bye..."
I cut the call and stood to my feet heading back to the front to continue my shift. I dove right in back to a working pattern getting money trickling in. I had thought I would've freaked out working in a bar but it isn't so bad, I was quite enjoying the dynamic atmosphere, with my past, I had even thought interacting with men and drinks would've been a problem but I was comfortable. May be the knowledge of knowing he was dead, a part of my fear died as well knowing I was safe now.
"Madhu" Craig stepped beside me and served the customer that stood waiting.
I stepped back taking a deep breath, once he'd served the customer he turned to me.
"Hon you okay?" he asked softly holding onto my shoulders.
I nodded. "Sorry about that" I muttered.
"No its okay. Listen do you need a few more minutes?"
I shook my head, I certainly didn't want to mess up since it was my first day. "No... I'm fine"
"Sure?" he quirked his brow up in concern.
"Yep. I'll be fine, thanks" I side stepped him and walked over to the customer who walked over.
"Alright" Craig walked back to his side and continued to serve the waiting customers.
Rishabh
"Can we go see aunty?" Ayaan questioned making me turn my head to him.
"Annie's not here Ayaan" I replied as I continued to type out a response to the email I'd received.
"Not Annie aunty" he chuckled, I turned my head to him, he walked over towards me then climbed into my lap. "That other aunty" he responded.
"Which aunty?" I frowned in confusion wondering who he was referring to.
"You know..." he paused as if trying to remember something. "That aunty...um.. yesterday in park we saw her"
I then realized he was talking about Madhu. "Oh... Aunty's busy" I responded to which his smile faded. "How about I call her and find out?" I asked not wanting to disappoint him again, he was already upset with not going to the park which also made me wonder whether he'd wanted to go to the park for Madhu thinking he'd see her.
I pulled out my phone and dialled Madhu's number.
Madhu
I pulled out my phone from my pocket as it vibrated and noted it was Rishabh who was calling, I looked around the bar seeing the bar was a little calm since majority of them were served and were now talking and drinking.
"Craig" I called.
"Yeah"
"Mind if I take this call?" I asked pointing to my phone.
"Sure.." he smiled, I walked to the back and answered the call.
"Yeah?"
"Madhu its me"
"Yeah I know" I chuckled. "I've got your number"
"Madhu... um.. Ayaan wanted to speak to you"
"Oh... Well then I'd like to speak to him as well" I smiled just at the thought of him.
"Hello" I heard him respond tentatively.
"Hey pet.. how are you?"
"Will you come see me?" he questioned right away surprising me.
I didn't know what to answer to that. "Um..."I chewed on my lip pondering for an answer. "Why don't you ask papa to bring you over?" I questioned back.
"Papa aunty said you should take me" He told Rishabh.
"Give it here" I heard Rishabh say before taking the phone and then spoke. "Madhu?"
"Yeah?"
"Is that what you said?"
"Not in so many words but yeah. Why don't you bring him over to mine?" I asked.
"Why yours and not mine?" he questioned back.
"Seriously Rishabh. You're so confusing, you don't mind me spending time with your son but it should be at your house? Do you like inflating your ego in some way?"
"It's just a question" He replied back.
"I'm sure you get pleasure from annoying me, you annoy me 24/7. If not awake then when I'm sleeping you annoy me" I huffed out in annoyance then bit down on my tongue cursing my mouth.
"When you're asleep huh? Do you dream about me?" he question, I could just imagine the look on his face, he was probably smirking right now.
"Zip it Mr Inflated Ego!" I countered. "Now... I won't be free till Saturday night so bring him over on Saturday"
"What are you doing for the rest of the week?" he questioned.
"Well like I told you, I work"
"You really work in a bar? I thought you were just saying it to brush me away"
"haha... You're not that special Rishabh that I'm going to make excuses to not see you, I do work in a bar"
"Why didn't you just apply for a job in an office or something?"
"None of your business" I turned to see Craig waving me over. "Listen I'm needed back at the front. I'll talk to you later about Saturday night"
"Alright" he sighed and cut the call.
I somewhere guessed he mustn't be pleased with the news of me working here but then his opinions didn't matter to me. I couldn't let his opinions affect me in any way, I'd let my father do that and it resulted in him powering over me, I couldn't let Rishabh do that to me. Will building this little relationship with Ayaan affect me? Because I knew somewhere I was letting Ayaan slowly be a part of my life, even if it is a little part. I shook away the thoughts and headed back to the front to continue with my shift.

Chapter 15 - Anxious
"Does this piece of ass really work here?" Tyler whispered eyeing Nicky.
"Ty do you love your life or that piece of ass more?" I questioned back quietly leaning over the bar.
"That's quite stupid Madhu. Obviously I love my life more" he replied taking a gulp of his beer licking his lips savouring the drink. I wondered how much he can drink so much.
"Then babe its best if you unglue your eyes from her ass, her boyfriend is working the doors" I replied gesturing to the door.
"Seriously? He's like that f**king ogre" his eyes widened as he found it hard to believe Edward was Nicky's boyfriend. "Doesn't she choke underneath him in bed or something?" he asked curiously in a slurred way.
"Ty!" I hissed as other's kinda heard him and eyed him. "not interested in knowing about others sex life"
He chuckled lifting his hands up as if surrendering and I knew for sure my little friend was pretty drunk.
"How many did you take?" I took away his beer and replaced it with a bottle of water.
"Heyyy... I want that" he pouted.
"Zip it and drink your water"
"Bitch" he muttered jutting his lips out more making him look quite adorable.
"bas***d" I muttered back and grabbed his face pressing a tight kiss to his cheeks. "That's for looking so damn adorable"
He laughed shaking his head. "I love you babe" he said it dreamily and rested his head on the bar.
"Is he asleep?" Ryan walked out and looked at Tyler.
"Think he's tired" I responded and walked over the customers who just walked in and started serving.
"Ty come on man. Get upstairs and sleep it off" I heard Ryan say, once I passed the drink to the customer I looked towards Tyler and saw Ryan helping him up and walk to the back where I guessed he was taking him upstairs to sleep it off.
"Madhu" I heard the all too familiar voice call out making me halt in place. I turned around to see Rishabh leaning against his car with a smile playing on his lips.
"What are you doing here Rishabh? Do you even know the time?" I questioned shaking my head. It was already 3 o clock in the morning, my shift ended at 1 am and it took an hour to clean up the bar along with that the drive was taking even longer with the accident that'd taken place on the main road which delayed traffic for a long time. Tyler was a little sober from sleeping off for a few hours but he was tired.
He looked behind me and I guessed it was at Tyler, I looked over my shoulder noting Tyler was looking at him with a bored expression as well as tired.
"Um Ty why don't you head up? I'll join you"
"Sure?"
"Yep. I'll be fine" I assured him.
"Alright, you've got 5 minutes, if you're not there I'm calling the police to report murder" he shouted over as he headed inside stumbling over his steps.
I looked back to see Rishabh glaring at Tyler's back. "Won't do you good Kundra. He can't see you" I responded.
He looked back at me sighing heavily then slowly approached me. "Look..."
"I am looking" I replied back. "What are you doing here?"
"I went home and all Ayaan did was talk about you" he sighed heavily brushing his hand through his hair.
"And that's a bad thing?" I quirked my brow up in amusement.
"I..." he paused looking down at the ground as if it was the most interesting thing. "I don't know" he straightened looking right back at me. "I don't know Madhu"
I nodded tearing my gaze away and looked around. "It's late"
"Madhu" he called me softly stepping closer.
"You don't need to say anything. I understand. No need to build a relationship with him when I'm not going to be permanent right?" I turned my head to him facing him directly.
He shook his head. "I just want to know one thing"
"What?"
"That no matter what you wouldn't hurt Ayaan" he spoke so softly I'd thought I was imagining his voice for a moment. "That whatever we have" he pointed between the space between us. "It will never get in the way of you building your relationship with Ayaan. Even if we hate each other or whatever comes" he sighed heavily. "I've hurt Ayaan many times and I can't let him get hurt any more. He..." he exhaled sharply rubbing his face then rested his hands on his hips. "He likes you a lot. I don't know what it is, I don't know if he's trying to find Annie in you or is he trying to Maahi in you, I don't know"
"Rishabh" I stepped forward, he turned his head looking at me, for the first time I noted a helplessness in his eyes that spoke volumes. "I won't ever hurt him. I like your son as well. He's cute and very adorable" I chuckled softly. "Even when I want to kill you many times, I still won't let anything affect Ayaan no matter how bitter how relationship might be, though we don't have a relationship" I winked hoping to lighten him up a little. He was just too... um detached and almost as if stone hearted but I might be wrong.
He nodded with a smile. "I'll head off. Thanks for your time" he turned to walk away but stopped. "How was the first day?" he looked over at me.
"Why Kundra?" I responded back with a question.
"Nothing wrong with asking is there?"
I studied him for a moment then shook my head. "Nope. Nothing wrong. It was good, actually too good"
"Really?" he turned to me as if intrigued to listen.
"Mmhmm" I hummed nodding my head. "I found the love of my life" I grinned at him.
"Guess I missed my chance" he winked laughing.
"Guess you did"
"So who's the lucky guy then?"
"That is for me to know and you to find out" I winked and headed towards my building, I sensed he was staring at me but I didn't look back I didn't want to give him any indication I liked him, even if I hated him most of the time, there's something about him.
"Oh thank God! You're fine" Tyler pulled me and wrapped me around his arms. "I was planning to call the police just now" he sighed.
I pushed him back shaking my head at him. "Sure you were"
"I was" he replied. "After waiting for another 5 minutes" he muttered and I heard it.
"Right off to bed, I'm hell tired" I stretched out my arms yawning. "I think I regret starting to work there" I looked at Tyler as he walked into the kitchen pulling out a bottle of cold beer from the fridge.
"Why? Thought you liked it" he looked back at me taking a large gulp of his drink.
"I do" I replied and walked towards my room. "But I don't know. The hours are kinda long innit?" I spoke and knew he was right behind me following me into my room.
"Well you wanted a job and you have one so deal with it" he responded and slumped himself down on my bed.
"Hmm... at least I don't start till the evening so it's alright" I grabbed my big shirt which was really Tyler's, I liked it so I stole it from him and he pretty much let me get away with it, I walked into the washroom and stripped off my clothes, once having a quick shower and drying myself I slipped on my shorts and the t-shirt then stepped out.
"Ty..." I called seeing my room was empty.
"My room" he called loudly.
"K... I'll sleep in my bed tonight" I responded and pulled back the covers and lied down, the last time I slept here was a few days back and that night I'd had that awful dream and went to sleep with Tyler since then. I prayed I didn't have to go through something like that tonight, a part of my fear had faded because somewhere in my mind I'd registered my step dad won't be able to hurt me anymore. He couldn't, he was 6 feet under the ground.
I gasped waking up, I blinked a couple of times to adjust my sight, the last I'd woken up was to my step dad and this time I'd woken up to dreaming about Rishabh.
I rubbed my forehead as the dream that I'd just seen was somewhat now blurry but I remember little bits of it, for some reason I touched my neck thinking of seeing some sort invisible mark, I shook my head convincing myself it was all a dream. He wasn't here, he couldn't be here. I brushed my hand through my hair in frustration hating Kundra right now. Unable to sleep I pushed off the covers and walked out of my room, I settled myself on the sofa and switched the tv on hoping I'd get bored and feel tired again.
I hadn't know when I dozed off because the next time I'd woke up was around 12 in the afternoon, the silence hanging in the apartment told me Tyler had left for work, I got up from the sofa pushing away the blanket which I guessed Tyler had placed over me in the morning and stood to my feet. I freshened, changed and ate quickly then done some cleaning up before getting ready for work at 4. The evening went by pretty much the same way as it did last night except this time I hadn't heard from Rishabh at all.
However over the next few days I'd gotten calls from him asking me about Saturday, when to arrive, whether he should bring anything and what desert do I like. Though I hardly spoke back because my work schedule was tight and tiring, I'd hardly had the energy which I guess Rishabh understood because he did let me go after a quick chat about Saturday.
I knew what I was going to do for Saturday, since they were coming over I guessed a movie night in and some dinner together should be enough, I don't want to be working too hard or else Rishabh might take it as something else since he had that problem of assuming things and making an issue of it. A part of me was excited whilst another part wondered whether I should be allowing them into my life.
Rishabh
Saturday evening was already here, I looked at Ayaan who was quite excited, we'd spent some time together over the week, I'd cleared my schedule and left an hour or two open for him and I note Ayaan was pleased with it. He'd opened up a little more and enjoyed the time we spent, whether it'd be a drive or just going to the local park he loved it.
"Papa come on" I looked at Ayaan who waiting by the car for me.
I smiled and locked the door behind me and walked over, I unlocked the car and helped him in.
"Can we buy pwesent for aunty?" he asked as I started buckling his belt.
"We'll get something on the way" I replied and closed the door and took the driver's seat.
Madhu
"Where the hell do you think you're going?" I grabbed onto Tyler's shirt stopping him.
"I'm not staying here, it's too much drama" he replied yanking himself away from my grasp.
"Ty!!! I don't want to be here alone" I grit out.
"Don't worry Madhu. You've got Ayin to stop his dad from jumping you" he laughed.
"bas***d" I muttered.
"Babe seriously I don't think I can do with a night in" he sighed.
"Well go then. Who's stopping you?" I turned and walked into the kitchen.
"Madhu... Madhu" I could hear him follow me calling my name."Dammit you woman" he turned me around scowling at me.
"What? I thought you wanted to go" I countered angrily.
"Like as if you wouldn't kill me" he mumbled shaking his head. "Anyways I'll make you a deal, I'll stay in but I'm still going out" he said making me confused.
"Meaning?"
"I'll go out now and come back in 2hrs time, that way you'll be done for dinner and I'm sure he wouldn't jump you then and you wouldn't jump onto him as well" he replied.
"Not interested in jumping anyone" I pushed him away and checked on my spaghetti which I had cooked.
"Deal?" he waited for me to answer.
I thought about it taking my time just to piss him off which did make him frustrated.
"Madhu!" he yelled angrily.
"Alright alright. Deal asshole" I threw the towel at him to which he caught it and chucked it back at me before turning on his heels and headed for the door.
I looked around, food was cooking, I was decently dressed, the place was tidy and all I was waiting for now was Rishabh and Ayaan who were going to be here soon.
