I agree that Padmini has been a good mother in terms of providing for her children and keeping the fighting spirit up to face life. But when times come that situation requires BRAIN along with brawn, she is a failure. She lacks mental sophistication to deal with complexities of life.
She herself had burrowed her way into the Sultan related problem and instead of providing a solution has add onto it. She should have been strict with Madhu to keep away from Sultan at any cost. It's a mother's job to rectify a child's wrong doing. After the Holi sequence viewers could see her sympathy lay with the gangster and she didn't stop Madhu in any way to help him against the law. The next deed by her takes away the cake. She met up and persuaded the gangu to convince Madhu and take her away to safety. This showed her not having correct judgement regarding human nature. She simply didn't have the idea what shadows this will cast on Madhu's honour or reputation and the resulting situation at Madhu's sasural. She was never shown to try to understand the subtle undercurrents in RK madhu's relation and the changing dynamics after their unwedding fiasco.
Present condition where Madhu's character is blackened by Marathe with the underlined question as to what the gangster was doing with the bride on the wedding day in isolation is 100% Padmini's doing.
This is my opinion and I appreciate people may have a different POV.
