I think too much is made of RK's traumatic childhood and the 3 betrayals. Many people lose one of their parents in childhood, lots get step parents too. Yes it does hurt a lot but if you hold on to your hurt for years and years, then you yourself are to blame.
RK got a wholesome childhood for the first 12 years of his life. He was pampered by both his parents. And when he lost his father to death, he wanted his mother to be there for him. She was too. I do feel she was wrong to remarry without first making sure that her son was okay with it or not but that doesn't change that fact that he was always her first priority. RK knows that too and that is why he was able to punish her for 16 years. He cared for her enough to take care of her materially and putting up with her husband's family but he never let her feel good about herself or their relationship.
So he got his heart broken by Deepali. Big deal. Nobody gets everything in life. He has had his share of luck too. He is a superstar. Adored and loved by millions. He wholeheartedly enjoys his stardom and the perks that come with it.
Coming to Madhu, she was the one who poked the sleeping tiger and got her family into trouble. She is quite selfish in her self-righteousness - so much so that she never stopped to think that her whole family earns its living from the film industry and RK is quite capable of ensuring that none of them ever find work again. She swept away Trishna's dreams as unimportant in front of her righteous tirade. In Sultan's case too she brought a gangster involved in a raging gangwar to her chawl, never thinking for a minute that she was endangering the lives of all the people there.
Coming back to her earlier mistake, she had to pay for her foolishness by marrying RK. In fact she got away quite lightly. The worst RK did to her was make her work as his spot and dance with her at the party. After that it was smooth sailing for her till the heartbreak. RK feels justified in his unwedding drama because breaking her was the reason he had married her. Yeah she did a lot for him during those few months but RK being RK kept a record of all her favours and carried out the unwedding only after he felt that he had returned all her favours. She saved his life so he saved her life back. She helped him with Bappa, his father's death and mother, so he forgave Mallik, got Padmini and Mallik married and tried to launch Trishna's career. RK's brand of justice! Tit for Tat - for negative as well as positive.
RK is emotionally abusive in his relationships. Madhu is extremely selfish but likes to think what she does is for the greater good. Both have huge egos. Both are crazy. And when they are together, sparks fly. We love them for what they are. Now if only the CVs will stop trying to paint RK all black and Madhu all white, it will be much more fun watching their cat and mouse games. Madhu is no angel (here's looking at you Mr. Tewari). Please let her accept it and drop all the sanskaar nonsense. Let her be a strong woman who gives it back as good as she gets and doesn't cloak her anger/ego/revenge under the veil of Ms. goody-two-shoes. We like grey. Give us grey.
