oh thank god , you made this post:).. I had so wanted to argue about this. and I agree with every word you have said.
There's no earthly way Madhubala and RK can ever be on the same plane character-wise. Even if it were petty revenge, Madhubala still would be justified in taking it entirely.
But again, this isnt the conventional revenge. She didn't set out with that particular intention , she didn't meticulously plan on hurting him to alleviate her own hurt. She was forced into it.
Ever since he realized he needs her, he has been impervious to her pleas and her requests. The woman was really trying hard on her own to move on. She wanted no part of him , she never answered his questions nor shared any part of her life with her.
When he forcibly brought her home, she realized that he is unable to see or hear anything which she or anyone says. in his own mind , he's the god, the judge, the people all one. The prey, the hunter, the victim the perpetrator. No wonder hes so melodramatic.
So yes, she was blackmailed by him into staying with the threat of self inflicted harm.It may not have worked had she not been a normal sane person, and had that knife scene not been so raw and disturbing. she was successfully blackmailed. Then on, in every scene she watched in disbelief and disgust how he reveled in her pain.. No one could get to him , no one could control him.and he is a man of immense power and influence.
So with that kind of a delusional powerful man, how do you get through? She was left no other recourse but to play along. and that is NOT revenge. She does not hope to get appeased by it at all. She was done with him and his games, all she wanted was to be left alone, or in the least, he realize and apologize for what he's done.
even now the intent is simply to break through that barrier and wake him up from that dreamland of his, from where he rules and makes the lives of everyone around him miserable. Only an unconventional approach can release her from him.
just my opinion.. whatever she does, i simply cant call it 'revenge'.
loved your post.
