Chapter 13

Madhu looked around in awe. This room was Rishab's inner sanctum, noone, not the servants nor Maa had ever seen the inside of the room. She was the only one who was granted a brief view of the place, once, only because she kept bugging him with different scenarios of the on goings inside the room. One day she bugged him about being a superhero like Batman, Captain America or even Daredevil. She kept asking him ' Do you also wear your underwear over your pants? Another time she came up to him and asked if he sold meth to children too? Because obviously the only thing he could be doing in there was brewing the drug in his clandestine meth lab. Yet another time she asked him, wasn't he ashamed to be doing what he was doing, dealing with human trafficking? Because obviously he was hoarding up women by the dozen in the room. Before she could come up with yet another theory and ask him if he was into pole dancing and practising his routine in the room, he decided to make an exception and let her peek into the room for a few seconds.

As Madhu entered the room, she closed her eyes and took in a deep breath, and let the smells intoxicate her. She remembered the last time she entered the room. She knew that if she kept at it and came up with stupid scenarios and bugged him of the same, he would ultimately cave in and let her into his space even if it was for a while.

As she opened her eyes, all she could see was her all around. It was like looking at herself in the mirror. There were innumerable sculptures and paintings of her all around. Some made of wood, clay and some even of metal. The paintings were life like and each told a story of the time they had spend together. The intensity and warmth of his love, of his passion which he hid behind his abrupt and cold exterior just leaped out of his works. She looked around in awe and didn't realise when tears ran like rivulets down her face.

While Madhu ran her hand down the life like statue that Rishab had made of her recently, and she knew it was the most recent one because it was still on the work table, Rishab stared at the very first painting he had made of her after his revenge, the same night he had left her at the chawl and sighed. After that night, every time he lifted a brush or a chisel or moulded clay, the end result was the same, it always resulted in a life like image of Madhu, his Madhu. "I know that I am as bad a person as there could be. I don't need to tell you. You know that first hand. Yet you found something in me to love and I took that too away from you. But what you don't know is before you were part of my life and after I made you go away, I was dead inside. Ever since you showed up in my life I have never felt more... more alive. I don't know what it is about you that makes me want to do better, be better. It was scary for me because it was distracting me away from my goals, my revenge. I thought if I am able to get through with it, I will be able to be me again. But I realised only too late that I cannot be me without you. I don't know how to be me without you anymore. You may not want to be around me anymore but I know I cannot live without you around me anymore. I am... sorry."

Madhu continued to focus on the statue, taking in every word that Rishab said. It was like the light that had extinguished inside her was beginnings to burn again, slowly. She closed her eyes as she spoke. "Rishab I could harbour anger, resentment, hatred, bitterness, indignation against you but my love for you trumps all. That one heartfelt sorry has calmed the roaring rage inside me. I forgive you Rishab."

Rishab felt a huge weight lift from his shoulders and he finally turned and walked towards her. He held her arm and slowly turned her around. Her caressed her face lovingly, wiping away the tears and looked deep into her eyes, wanting to see her doe brown eyes, but found himself staring into the eyes he once owned. "Thank you... thank you so much." And moved forward to kiss her on her forehead.

Madhu stopped him midway, placing her hand on his chest and pushed him back a little. "Rishab I have forgiven, not forgotten."

Rishab nodded his head in acceptance and understanding of what she said. "I will do everything I possibly can to erase that memory. And there will be a day when you will be truly happy, a day when the past will take leave to never return."

But true forgiveness does not come without washing away the past. I am just happy she did not give in altogether.

I agree... But asking for forgiveness does not erase everything... amends need to be made... By saying "i have forgiven not forgotten"... she is taking the guilt away, soothing his soul... and also opening a way for him to make amends..
