I think he knows that Madhu is far much better person then Dipali, so he says things like that, but he himself doesn't want to depend on anyone, he wants to turn back the clock to how he lived before Madhu came in his life. He doesn't want to have his happiness and wellbeing to be dependent on Madhu...That's why he has returned to drinking also, drinking to try to forget Madhu.
