Chapter 1
It was a long long night, darker than any night that life had known thus far. The bitter words still hung around in the air, and with each breath, got absorbed in the blood, flowing in the veins, pricking like pieces of glass. This was beyond hurt, beyond pain, beyond tears. This was a darkness that hadn't ever been seen before, even for someone who was so familiar with darkness it was a treasured friend. Lying on the bed, lifeless and wordless, it felt like life had reduced to being an endless wait. A wait for sleep or death, whichever came sooner.
No, there were no tears. A few initial ones had dried off, the rest had frozen in reminder of how "strong" the mind said the heart was supposed to be. No, there was no room for flowing tears.
There were no thoughts either, of course. The mind had been so busy fighting the heart, willing it to be strong, that it had given up, exhausted, leaving the body numb. There were no thoughts, no questions, no wonderings, no hope, no tomorrow. There was only the present - a moment that hurt so much it couldn't be felt anymore.
And there was the past. A beautiful past. Of Madhu and RK. Madhubala and Rishabh. A beautiful loving past. Of moments that truly set them both free. Of a love that strengthened, healed and nourished.
A love which was now labelled a lie.
But was it really a lie?
As the minutes creeped by and the night gave way to the gloomiest morning RK could remember, he reminded himself, for the umpteenth time, to start believing it was a lie too, like he'd managed to make everyone else believe.
Else this wait for death was going to be way too long. RK wasn't sure he had what it took to survive THAT, left in him.
