Hello everyone,
"We'll take care of her," uncle says, with a resolute tone. "If it's all right, of course."
At this time it is impossible not to be overwhelmed by gratitude. This man, who knows me less than a day, is taking the responsibility of caring for me, for God knows how long.
I would get up from this chair and go to hug him. Instead, I just nodded, trying to cry.
After I repeated for the umpteenth time, that even if I'm not being sought is highly recommended that I do not leave the island (as if you could go far without papers, no money, no nothing), the agent Mc Abby allows us to go away. Uncle walks out the door of the small police station before me, making my way, but as I follow in his footsteps my arm is blocked by a firm grip.
"If you needed anything, or if you just wanted to have a chat ... well, that's my number."
The hand of Agent Mc Abby- Harry- that grabs my arm puts me in trouble. It's too hot, too imposing, shaking too hard. I try to smile, which probably resemble more of a grin, while I struggled out of his grip.
"Thanks Agent,"
"Harry," he interrupts me. "Call me Harry. We will have about the same age, right? "
As he speaks, he runs a hand through his dark hair, and gives me a wink.
God, tell me that is not true. He is you really doing what I believe?
"Uh, thanks ... Harry. Now I have to go. "
And without giving him a chance to say anything else or to stop, I catch up with quick steps Uncle is waiting for me by the entrance.
"Are you okay?" From the grin of uncle, I can see he has seen the scene. He hands me his arm, which I gladly accept, and take a walk.
"Yes, all right. Of course, I do not expect anything like that ... "I replied. Before that Agent even put in doubt my statements (or rather, the statements of uncle: I barely opened my mouth during the whole meeting), then shamelessly he flirts with me.
Incredible. Incredible.
"Do not worry ... Harry is a guy exuberant, but all he can do is bark, he doesn't bite."
We keep walking and uncle show me the only town of the small island. A supermarket, a hardware store, a bakery. The clothing store of Megha, that I see from the window busy with a customer, a pub, a seafood restaurant. The streets are narrow. The houses and buildings, all very similar to each other. There are so many trees, so many plants, so many bikes and a few cars.
Passing the elementary school, uncle informs me that Avinash, Megha's husband, works here. It is a history teacher, and he is very popular with children.
A few hundred yards away uncle indicate me a house which is much more beautiful than the other houses that we saw this morning. It is surrounded by a white picket fence, and the large, well-kept garden is shaded by huge oaks.
"This is our home. On the ground floor I live with my wife and upstairs Megha and Avinash. "
"Oh, it's really beautiful. How long you live here? "
"It will be five years in a few months."
Five years in a few months. But Megha told me this morning ...
"So Rishabh was here when you came?"
"Arjun told you anything?" Uncle's expression is a mixture of disbelief and ... hope, perhaps?
"No, he did not say anything," I reply, and a hint of disappointment across his features. "Megha has mentioned something this morning when I asked her why Rishabh does not live in the village with you ..."
"May I know what she said?" He asks, a curiosity evident in his voice and in his eyes.
"She told me that Rishabh is the lighthouse keeper, so he must live there for strength."
It is not true, Megha did not tell me exactly. But perhaps pretending to know less than I know (little, very little) I can find something else. Why Rishabh came here to start with.
"Ah, wrong answer. Rishabh has just escaped. He hides behind the work of the lighthouse, behind the need for solitude, behind the love for nature. It's just shit, allow me the word. "
I cannot hold back the smile, curve my lips. Uncle is always so composed, so polite and attentive, it's really strange to hear him use a word like that.
"But when he put together the perfect plan," he continues, "he has not come to terms with myself. We waited for Megha to finish high school, we have arranged, documents, we sold the house, furniture and cars. And we came here. "
"It was very generous of you," Uncle looked at me quizzically. "I mean, leave everything and come here, to be close to Rishabh."
The street is quiet. It's just us, our voices and the sound of our footsteps.
"Generous? No, not really. I uprooted my family from its roots, dragging the other side of the world. I was very selfish, but I could not do otherwise. I could not afford to lose even Rishabh. "
Uncle puts his hands in his pockets, and keep walking and staring in front of him.
I would like he continue to speak. I would give him a million questions, ask who else he has lost and from what has escaped Rishabh. But when I caught his eye, I see a hint of sadness that was absent until a few seconds ago, and I cannot find the courage to break the silence.
The air is cool, but pleasant. The sun is hidden by a thick layer of gray clouds, but for some strange reason I find it comforting.
We continue to walk in silence until my stomach growls loudly. Uncle blurts out a chuckle, before passing an arm around my shoulders.
"Come on, let's go. It's lunchtime. "
When we get home, Megha and Rishabh are already in the kitchen. Rishabh seems very relaxed, and I find myself smiling as I watch them prepare lunch. Rishabh cut vegetables, and Megha is busy going around him. But I am busy watching his long, beautiful fingers hold the knife, and imagine them on my skin. I'm hopeless.
Uncle and I briefly tell what happened at the police station. When uncle informs them that I'll continue to stay with them until the situation is resolved, Megha runs towards me, throwing her arms around my neck.
"Oh, it's perfect, it's perfect! I was so worried, I feared that you would be sent somewhere! You'll see, you do not have to worry about anything, we'll take care of you. "
The embrace of Megha almost choking me, but it gives me warmth and makes me smile.
I know she's talking from the heart, and I know that they will take care of me as they have done until now.
So I gave a tight hug with all the force of which I am capable, thank her and give her a kiss on the cheek.
"You want to come and stay with me? The house is not large, but there is a room where you can settle down. I mentioned you to Avinash, he wants to meet you. We could organize a dinner together tonight. Oh, and during the day you could come with me to the store ... "Megha speaks with a speed that almost scares me and prevents me not to understand everything she is saying. She is asking me to go and stay with her, and help her with the shop. She tells me about her husband, making sure that I'll adore him, and plans to show me the island.
It is a good proposal , and is undoubtedly the best solution given the situation.
That's why I do not expect the words coming from my lips. That's why no one is more surprised when I tell of the undersigned.
"To tell the truth I'd stay here at the lighthouse ... With Rishabh. If it is not a problem, of course. "
Instantly, three pairs of eyes are on me.
The astonishment that I read in the green of Rishabh is not a surprise. Neither is the fun in that of uncle. What surprises me, however, is the satisfaction that I find in those of Megha, accompanied by a satisfied grin that draws her lips.
I should take back everything, and accept the offer of Megha.
Obviously, I do not.
"Rishabh, it's okay ... if I stay here with you?"
Rishabh nods quickly and looks down, a reaction that now I'm learning about.
He agreed. He said yes, I will stay with him.
I feel simultaneously relieved, excited and terrified.
I just hope that the smile appears on his lips is not a figment of my imagination.
"We need a name!" Megha's words remind me of my thoughts.
"How?"
"We need a name for you. You're staying with us for a period of time not yet determined, we cannot keep calling you 'honey' or 'darling' or some other stupid nickname. We need a name, and I refuse to call you Senorita, Chulbully . I want a real name. "
"Well, it may seem absurd, you're right," Uncle's voice was almost amused when he responds to her daughter. "Any proposal?"
"Well, do not look at me. I forgot my real name, I cannot invent a new one "I say, and it's incredibly liberating to be able to make a joke about my condition. I can see Megha and Uncle laughing, but it's the smile that Rishabh gives me that makes my heart beat.
"So ..." Megha puts a hand on her hip, while the index finger beat gently on the chin. The expression on her face is very concentrated and fun, and I realize that we're all staring at her with a smile.
"Oh, I found it. Perfect, just perfect! "
"Let see, what would this memorable name?" Rishabh chuckles, making further widen my smile.
"Radz. You shall be called Radz. "
At the very moment in which Megha pronounce that name, the face of Arjun turns. Every trace of fun disappears, leaving only a ... Anger.
"Megha."
"Oh, Rishabh, come on. It's a lovely name. "
"Megha." Rishabh's voice was hard and cold. He keeps his eyes closed, his hands balled into fists.
"Radz Radz Radz. I like it, it's perfect for you. "
To speak now is uncle "Megha, honey, there are so many names ..."
"Yes. And Radz is what I want. "
"Megha. In my room. Right now. "Rishabh voice is almost a growl now, and even Megha has not the courage to contradict him. In a few seconds they are out of the kitchen, and the sound of footsteps on the stairs is followed by a door slamming.
Uncle approached me, shaking my hand gently. He opens his mouth to speak, but he do not have the time.
"Megha! What the hell are you doing, huh? "The shout of Rishabh arrive to the kitchen, and I stiffen immediately.
For a few seconds the silence fills the room, but it only lasts a very short.
"I know you, I know what you're trying to do. Well, I'll give you some news: futile attempt. And if I have to send away the girl to prove it, I will not hesitate to do so. For the last time Megha: mind your own business. "
I realize that I left the hand of uncle and I'm clenching my fists only when I feel the nails sticking in the flesh. The burning eyes tells me the tears are coming, but I'm not going to cry in front of uncle this time. He does not deserve it after all he did for me today.
"I ... I'm going to get some 'air," I can say before the sobs make their way into my throat.
Uncle tells me something, but I cannot figure it out.
I close the door behind me, and I do the only thing I can do.
Run away.
