Diwali
Madhu awoke and looked towards RK who was still asleep. She smiled.
She had accepted her feelings for him but hadn't confessed her feelings to RK yet.
RK was changing himself. He had begun to develop feelings for Madhu as well but refused to accept them.
Madhu had kept a fast for RK on Karva Chauth and though RK had enjoyed the thought of her keeping a fast for his long life, he never showed her how it had made him feel. He broke her fast as he was supposed to after the moon came out and they had felt connected, as husband and wife, for the first time that night.
Madhu got out of bed slowly, avoiding waking up RK, and she went to change. She noticed that RK was still asleep and she left to prepare for something special.
(30 minutes later.)
Madhu walked into RK's room with a tray with breakfast. She went and sat on the side of the bed beside where RK slept. She shook his arm while holding the tray in her lap.
Madhu: RK wake up, it's late.
RK: Mmm…five more minutes.
Madhu: RK, wake up or else…
RK opened his eyes and focused them on his wife. He turned over and sat up. He rubbed his eyes.
RK: Biwi?
Madhu: Nope, Mr. India at your service!
Madhu smiled and RK let out a slight smile himself.
Madhu: Go freshen up; Mr. India is waiting for your breakfast.
RK got off the bed while staring at his wife and thinking, "why is she being so nice to me…?"
(10 minutes later.)
RK walked back towards their bed and sat beside his wife.
Things had changed between them and so he didn't know how comfortable he felt sitting so close to her. He had been trying for the past few days to pull himself away, to not get attached to her due to his fear of losing her. But there were times where he couldn't help himself. Times like this.
RK sat close to his wife and she began feeding him. He continued to stare at her while she smiled and fed him.
"What a beautiful smile," RK thought.
RK didn't even realize that while he was lost in thoughts of Madhu that his food had finished. Madhu stared at him and laughed. She raised her hand and touched his chin to push his mouth closed.
RK blinked and then swallowed, he looked away from Madhu.
RK: Uh, thanks for the food.
Madhu: No problem patidev! Oh, and happy Diwali!
RK looked at his wife with a confused look in his eyes. He had forgotten the special occasion that he used to always enjoy with his father. He hadn't celebrated in years.
Madhu smiled and then got up to leave but RK grabbed her hand. She turned to face him.
RK: Happy Diwali to you too biwi.
Madhu smiled at him as he let go of her hand. She turned and left, many preparations were still left for what she had planned for RK.
RK left for shoot as soon as he got ready and Madhu continued to prepare for Diwali celebrations in the evening.
(Hours later – in the evening.)
RK returned home to see lights hanging around his house. He was in awe of how amazing his house looked lit up like that. He turned to look at the stairs and saw Madhu in a beautiful yellow and orange anarkali suit with her hair down in a new style. They locked eyes and it felt as though time had frozen for them as they got lost in each other's eyes.
RK didn't even realize that he had walked towards Madhu until he got close and his foot hit the first step on the stairs.
He looked away and then back towards Madhu. Madhu looked at him with confusion.
RK: That, yo…your hair, it's kind of, nice. I mean the house is nice.
Madhu smiled. RK kept his eyes away from her gaze. He began to walk past her on the stairs and then she called his name. He turned to look at her.
Madhu: Get ready quick, I have a surprise for you.
Before RK could question her, she ran down the rest of the stairs and out towards the back door. RK stood on the stairs while thinking, "Surprise?"
(30 minutes later.)
RK walked down the stairs and towards the back door. Before he could walk out, Madhu came before him.
Madhu: Close your eyes.
RK: Why?
Madhu: RK! Close them!
RK: I don't liste…
Before RK could finish, Madhu already had her hand over his eyes. She held his hand and led him outside.
RK realized they had stopped in place. Then he heard his wife.
Madhu: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1…ready?
Madhu took her hand off of RK's eyes and he saw a giant sign made of lights that read "Happy Diwali Rishabh!" He was taken off guard at first, awestruck, and surprised that someone would go through so much to make that for him.
Madhu: This isn't all…
Just as Madhu said that, a huge firework went off. The sound made Madhu jump and run into RK's arms. RK looked down at his wife who was enjoying the firework show. He admired her for a moment and then placed his arm around her shoulders.
Madhu noticed this and she smiled but didn't look towards RK. She took in the moment.
Another huge firework went off and Madhu's fingers tightened on RK's shirt. He liked the feeling of that and his fingers tightened on her shoulders. She shook RK.
Madhu: Look RK, look!
Madhu looked up towards RK and realized that he had been staring at her and not the fireworks. They locked eye. They straightened and stood in front of each other. RK with his arms around Madhu and Madhu with her hands on RK's chest.
They remained lost in each other's eyes until another big firework exploded and they looked towards the sky.
RK let go of Madhu and she took her hands off of him as well. They stood and watched the fireworks for a moment until Madhu got impatient. She grabbed RK's arm and pulled him back inside.
RK: Where are we going now? More surprises? Biwi why ar…
Madhu: Shh.
RK quieted himself as he walked into a room full of diyas which weren't lit and a half completed rangoli on the ground.
Madhu let go of RK's arm and she looked at him.
Madhu: It's time for you to celebrate Diwali again RK.
RK looked towards Madhu.
RK: Madhu...you did all this for me?
Madhu: I did it for my husband.
Madhu smiled. She placed her fingers within his and he looked down at their hands which interlocked perfectly. She walked him towards the rangoli and she let go of his hand. She knelt and so did he. They began finishing the rangoli and then lighting all the diyaas together.
When they finished, they took a step back and took in the beauty of what they had created within minutes of being there. RK looked towards his biwi.
RK: Madhu…
Madhu turned and looked at RK.
RK: Tha…
Madhu: Nuh…I don't believe in thank yous!
Madhu winked and he thought back to when he had said that to Madhu. He laughed and so did Madhu.
RK noticed that Madhu was getting closer. She placed her hands on RK's chest.
RK: What…biw…
Madhu: Shh…
Madhu rested her head on RK's chest and wrapped her arms around his back. RK stood there emotionless.
He didn't know how to react. He didn't want to push her away because it'd hurt her. He didn't want to wrap his arms around her either because he refused to accept his feelings for her. So he stood still as a statue.
Madhu felt it was time. She had dreamt of what it'd be like when she first confessed her feelings to RK. Days had gone by since she realized how she really felt for him. She couldn't hold it in anymore. So she slowly said it with her quivering voice, just as she had dreamt it.
Madhu: RK…main tumse pyaar karti hoon…I love you.
