u know, there may be more than meets the eye to ur stmt...SP is a Murdoch enterprise and they arent known to play fair...so their complete dominance of the Indian TV indy these past so many years does raise questions on fair play..it could be that they do pay higher carriage charges to the operators who thus distribute their channels more ...pls note i am purely conjecturing here as i dont belong to this industry but speaking purely as a business professional, it does boggle the mind given that their content is very average.

nevertheless, digital TV gives me , the viewer, the right of choice and thus focus will shift to content as all this talk of masses and classes will disappear as classes too will have to be wooed and hopefully we will start getting our kind of programming soon...

This is one very informative post! Thanks a ton.

Though I already knew some of the facts you mentioned, some others were news to me...like what the cable mafia are up to...they really are pulling the chains of the channels.

The city I come from, Trivandrum is now digitilized ..ie, there is no direct cable available...one has to use a set top box. However, channels like Zee are not available...it's a bit confusing.

Another thing about the current set top boxes is that..one can't use it if one relocates to another city...heck! it's actually useless even if one moves to another part of the same city!

It looks as though the cable cartel still holds strong. May be these set top boxes are different from the ones that will be available once digitalization takes place in Oct.

The other options are more expensive Tata Sky, Airtel etc...but the good thing about them is that you can use them all over India.

thanks, pippa!!

i think given that its early days, there will be confusion regarding packages and service providers... for now, zee has its own DTH so maybe they arent providing their channels to outside operators...but i understand there should be multiple service providers who should be giving all the key channels ..tata sky, airtel are some of these multiple providers...

in time, i am sure, the large economies of scale should reduce costs and hence price to consumer. hopefully, TRAI will also monitor these prices and packages more diligently and honestly

Just came across some more statistics related to TAM and its inadequacies...I have quoted only the important parts of the article...those which emphasis how outdated and inaccurate the TAM system really is!

TOI, Bangalore, August 2, 2012:

"..., at stake now is a credible system to measure viewership of the television industry that commands $2.1 billion in advertising revenues. The NDTV plaint points out that of the over 231 million households in India today. 148 million have a TV connection.

Of this number. 126 million own a cable and satellite (C&S) connection (including 42 million who own a digital TV connection) while 21 million households have access only to Doordarshan.

The segment of 126 million C&S households is growing exponentially with over 10 million households(or 45 million people) added in the last one year alone.

But, of this growing section, TAM only covers the urban segment. Of the 78 million households in Urban India, 69 million households have a TV connection. But TAM covers only 35% with only about 8160 people meters in 155 cities."

TOI, Bangalore, August 3, 2012:

"It is a well known fact that about 8160 boxes are used to extrapolate viewership of 625, 24 hour channels for a population of over a billion.

The TAM system consists of boxes which are installed in a few homes, which then give data on channels watched, their periodicity, etc--all of which are key inputs for advertisers, which is the lifeblood of TV channels especially since they get only one-fifth of the subscription revenue they are entitled to from the cable operators."

"The NDTV plaint too makes the point that the small sample size meant that "bribing and manipulating only a select number of homes" could cause significant change of data. The industry has pointed out that quality of such data is suspect since it was well known that upmarket homes would be the toughest ones to allow an intrusive devise like a people meter in their homes especially since data is collected manually."

@pippa...thanks for the update
I am wondering why NDTV filed a complaint so late when it really is immaterial coz digitisation would remove all inconsistencies and improve data quality as TV channels would then know exactly how many viewers tuned in for each show...
all the ad spend for whuch trps were imp, has alrady been spent and used so this case now at this stage of moving from analog to digital reallly becomes immaterial...
but well...who knows whats really going on
