PART 9:

That evening, the Malhotra's organized a party at their house to honor their special guest from Mumbai. Shabd was touched by their gesture. A tent was set up in the backyard with a halwai specially hired to cook typical Punjabi dishes.

Jeet loved to sing and was asked to entertain all the guests with his peppy bhangra
numbers.

Shabd could tell that the Malhotra's were not only warm hearted but generally fun loving people.

Mahi wore a red and golden salwaar kameez with her hair braided with a parandee. The glow of happiness on her face from Jeet's arrival made her look really beautiful that evening. Shabd looked dashing himself in a black kurta pajama.

"Shabd ….aapko Jeet se milwaaun?" Mahi asked excitedly when she saw Jeet enter their house with his brother, Veer and Raji didi.

"Raji didi!" Mahi hugged her oldest sister, "Veer jiju….aap kinne handsome lag rahe hain!"

"Tho aap hain Shabd Sareen? Bahut suna hai aapke baare mein," Veer introduced himself and shook his hand.

"Hello…nice to meet you Veer, Namaste Raji didi……main aapko didi bol sakta hoon na?' Shabd asked politely.

"Haan haan…kyun nahin….main tho sab ghar waalon ki didi hi hoon….shukr hai Veer mujhey didi nahin kehte," Raji smiled and hit Veer playfully, "suna hai aapne hamari Mahi ki bahut madad ki?"

"Arre nahin…..aisi koi baat nahin hai didi……madad tho shayad Mahi ne meri ki hai," Shabd added softly.

"Wo tho Mahi ki puraani aadat hai…….chaahe kisi ko help chaahiye ho ya nahin….. Mahi rani apni taraf se hamesha tayyar rehti hai," Raji chuckled.

"Didi!" Mahi whined and placed her head on Raji's shoulder affectionately.

"Hmmm….yeh aadat tho bahut kharaab hai phir,' Shabd teased her.

"Kya Kaha Shabd?" Mahi protested, "agar main aapke peeche nahin padhti, tho na jaane aap kisi patri par flat padhe hote!"

Everyone laughed aloud at Mahi's reply and walked in.

Shabd followed Mahi and whispered in her ear, "agar phir chaahun ki tum mere peeche padh jao….tho kya karna hoga?"

"FITTEH MOOH!" Mahi was aghast at his suggestion, "kuch tho sharam kariye ab……dekhiye Jeet ke saamne aisa waisa kuch na bol dein aap."

"Kyun? Kyun na bolu Jeet ke saamne?" Shabd asked innocently

"Wo sochega hamare beech kuch chakkar hai!" Mahi answered.

"Tho nahin hai kya?" Shabd asked mischievously

"Kya nahin hai?" she asked

"Chakkar?" he grinned.

"SHABD! Chup ho jaaiye….warna warna," she hesitated and lowered her head as she saw some guests approaching them.

Shabd grabbed her wrist and pulled her behind the walls of the tent, "warna kya karogi?' he smiled wickedly. Mahi blushed and looked away, "haath chhodiye Shabd….koi dekh lega…..chaliye Jeet se milwaati hoon."

Shabd let go of her wrist and looked frustrated, "yeh Jeet ka baccha kyun aa tapka?" he said to himself, 'chalo…..milwaao apne hone waale pati se!" and walked unhappily after Mahi. The more she ran away from him, the more attracted he was getting to her. He was in no mood to meet Jeet and almost hoped that Jeet would not be interested in Mahi at all.

"JEET!" Mahi ran to him, "kitni der se ishara kar rahi hoon main…..kahan kho gaye the?" she could barely catch her breath.

An absent minded Jeet came out of his trance from staring at Soni and looked at Mahi, "arre Mahi? Main bhi kab se tumhein dhoondh raha tha….kahan hai tumhara Mumbai waala dost?"

"Aao milwaati hoon tumhein," Mahi pulled him by his wrist and walked towards Shabd. Shabd swallowed a lump in his throat as he saw Jeet and Mahi hand in hand, "yeh mere saath hi kyun hota hai? Jo ladki mujhey pasand aati hai….wo hamesha kisi aur ki kyun ban jaati hai?'

'Hi….I am Shabd," he came forward and shook hands with Jeet.

"Hi….I am Jeet….I have heard a lot about you."

"Same here," Shabd grinned and rolled his eyes at Mahi, "Mahi aapki bahut tareef karti hai."

Jeet smiled and looked down, "Mahi tho bas yun hi."

"Jeet…maine Shabd ko apni shaadi ke baare mein sab bataa diya hai…..aur ab Shabd se keh rahi hoon ki wo Soni se shaadi kar lein…..kitna mazaa aayega na phir?" she said chirpily.

Jeet's color drained at the prospect of Soni marrying someone else, 'arre ….Mahi…..Shabd se tho..tho poonch lein pehle….wo…wo tayyar hain ya nahin?"

"Shabd haan keh dee jiye na," Mahi pleaded.

"Mahi!....Chalo aisa karte hain Jeet se kuch gaane sun lete hain pehle….Jeet suna hai tum bahut accha gaate ho?" Shabd changed the subject.

Jeet was agreeable and asked the dhol and nagada waalas to start playing their drums.

The guests, Shabd, Mahi, Soni, Veer, Raji all joined Jeet in the energetic bhangra number. Shabd had never danced so freely in his life. His gaze was fixated on Mahi throughout, who was so engrossed in the dance that she could care less where she was. Jeet was too busy admiring Soni. Only Raji was the one who noticed the two men staring at her sisters; she was very happy for both of them. Raji was aware that Jeet loved Soni but did not have the heart tell Mahi about it. When she saw Mahi and Shabd having a great time with each other, she was relieved and certain that Shabd would take good care of her youngest sister.

The party lasted into the wee hours of morning. Dinner interrupted the dancing and singing briefly but everyone was back shaking their legs soon after eating a heart Punjabi meal. Shabd had gotten used to the spicy and greasy food of the Malhotra household by now and did not need hajmola any longer- just the hajmola waali was enough…..

Next morning, Shabd announced that he was leaving back for Mumbai. He had not been able to sleep all night after the party. To his dismay, Jeet was a reality and there was no reason for him to hang around any longer than was necessary. He was grateful to Mahi for saving his life and showing him how to live after all these years. He could live with those memories and learn how to face the most adverse conditions with a smile just like Mahi. He was not going to get disheartened if he could not have Mahi in his life- she had given him a lot more than he had ever bargained for.

"Aap jaa rahe hain Shabd?" Mahi was disappointed

"Haan Mahi…..aakhir apni responsibilities bhi tho dekhni hain," Shabd smiled

"Meri shaadi mein aayenge na?" she asked

"Haan….jab bhi tumhari shaadi hogi…..main zaroor wahan pahunch jaaoonga…promise!" it was a difficult promise for him to make but he could not disappoint her.

Shabd took leave from everyone and left with a heavy heart.

For some reason, seeing Shabd leave left a lump in Mahi's throat too. She had gotten so used to his presence, his little jokes, his mischief and most of all his adoring glances at her. She knew in her heart that he had fallen for her; she was happy that Suhani was out of his life. It should not matter to her, who Shabd loved and who he didn't, but why did she care?

She heaved a sigh and walked upstairs to her bedroom.

As soon as she stepped into her room, she heard some voices from Soni's room. She walked out and tried to overhear the conversation from the other room.

"Soni…..ab Mahi se baat karne ka waqt aa gaya hai…aakhir kab tak usey andhere mein rakh sakte ho tum dono?" Raji didi spoke

"Lekin didi…Mahi ka dil too jaayega," Soni replied.

"Aur Jeet? Uska socha hai? Wo kya karega tere bina? Jee-jaan se chaahta hai wo tujhey….aur tu bhi tho deewani hai uski!" Raji raised her voice.

A boulder had just hit Mahi- her world came crashing down; her heart was shattered into a million pieces at that moment………her dreams were no longer dreams…….how could she ever snatch her sister's happiness……why didn't she notice that Jeet and Soni loved each other? Mahi froze at the spot, numb of any emotion……just a dark cloud hung in front of her……

but then humara shabd hai na 😆 😆
that part behind the tent was........ 😳 😳
hope shabd n mahi get back together, just like in the movie, only sooner i hope 😃
