I didn't want to start a thread about this... but I should mention that Maayka did not start in the US yesterday (January 22). I kept checking Zee tv every 30 min yesterday because I didn't want to miss Maayka... and they didn't have it on. My sister tells me that she saw a promo for Maayka that said it will begin in the US on January 29th, which is next Monday.

Betiyaan go to their Maayka

A still from Maayka
The set of Maayka witnessed the most unusual event on the first day of their shoot. The entire unit of Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan visited the unit of Maayka, to wish them luck.

Both the serials have common directors, Romesh and Rajan Shahi. Rajan Shahi, the series director said, "I am the series director and Romesh is the episode director of Betiyaan. On the first day, I was shooting with the Betiyaan team who were shooting next to the Maayka crew. So, I went to the sets of Maayka to watch the shoot. But, I was so surprised when the entire team of Betiyaan came to Maayka's sets to wish them. I am really touched by their gesture"

It was a wedding sequence and the unit of Betiyaan beautifully fit in the crowd for the wedding. Talking about the warmth between the actors, Rajan says, "There are a lot of positive vibes on the sets of Betiyaan. The Betiyaan team gets along well. I hope, Maayaka team also turns out to be the same as Betiyaan. There is also a lot of similarity between the two sets as well; except one has a Punjabi look (Maayka) while the other one is Gujarati (Betiyaan).

On the cover

Namita Nivas
Posted online: Friday, January 26, 2007 at 0000 hours IST

After gaining immense appreciation and respect as a celebrity on The Great Indian Laughter Champion Show as Julie and his Pehchaan Kaun? act, like every aspirant Navin Prabhakar too tried his luck on the big screen. But his debut Marathi film No Problem did not reap the kind of dividends he had hoped from it. That did not deter the humorist. He continued holding stage shows and entertaining people.

Navin now has a Hindi film titled Pehchaan Kaun? which unfortunately is held up because of date problems. Besides this, he has a music album coming up for release in February. He has lent his voice for all the eight pop numbers that have been composed by Nitin Raikwar who has penned seven songs while one is by Rashid and Manoj Santoshi. "I want my mentor Johny Lever to launch my album. Whatever I am today is because of him," says the stand-up comedian who has anchored the Screen awards for two consecutive years in a row.

Navin recently worked on the promotional video with Shah Rukh Khan for Kaun Banega Crorepati though he has not featured in it. And what he is now looking forward to is seeing his picture on the cover of school notebooks. "Like Indira Gandhi, Sachin Tendulkar and others, I too have become a youth icon," beams Navin Prabhakar. Soon will we be hearing kids saying Pehchaan kaun in school premises?

Reel and Real

Mi Amruta Bolte which is releasing this week, is based on a true incident that rocked Sangli in 1996. It traces the life and death of Amruta Deshpande who was killed by a guy who tried to make her confess that she was in love with him. And when she did not give in, she was stabbed 22 times in an open market place even as about 1000 people gathered and watched the ghastly homicide. But no one dared to come forward as the fanatic had a knife in his hand.

Even as the film is releasing in Sangli on January 26, the audio release of the film as well as website www.miamrutaboltey was launched in Kolhapur on January 18. For the first time Shaan has sung a Hindi song for a Marathi film. Madhura Welankar is playing the lead role of Amruta. She is considered to be one of the most beautiful and talented amongst Marathi heroines today. Accompanying her are Rajesh Shringarpure, Pradeep Welankar, Madhu Kambikar, Dr Girish Oak and Dr Sushrut Puranik. Produced by Dr Supriya Puranik, Dr Sushrut Puranik and Dr Kamlesh Shah and Samruddhi Jadhav, Mi Amruta Boltey is a Shri Chaitanya Creation Presentation.

Platinum jubilee for Ashok Shinde

Ashok Shinde is the third Marathi actor to complete 75 films in his career. Before him, late Laxmikant Berde had a total of 150 films to his credit, while Ashok Saraf has 250 to his name and is still going strong. Now with the release of Evdhasa Aabhal soon, Ashok will have hit the platinum jubilee mark.

An electronic engineer, Ashok gave up his job to make it in films, and made his debut in 1983 with Ram Kadam's Pathe Bapurao. The film was based on the life of Pathe Bapurao who, though coming from a conservative Brahmin family became a famous shahir in the tamashas of his time. But the film was shelved for reasons unknown.

It was in 1989 that Reshamghaati came and the film was a hit. Ever since, Ashok Shinde has never looked back. As he got busy with assignments, the Pune-based actor shifted to Mumbai with wife and two daughters.

Ashok has had no qualms playing the solo hero, character actor, baddie or featuring in a multi-starrers and he has done each role with the same finesse, skill and fairness, be it films or TV. Besides Marathi, the actor even tried his hand at Hindi films and was seen as the CM's spoilt son in the Nana Patekar-starrer Yeshwant as well as Deepak Balraj Vij's Saibaba. Recently he had a role in Dil Se Pooch Kidhar Jaana Hai. And now as the actor completes 75 films to his name, like him, we too wonder, ab inko kidhar jaana hai?

Arun Govil returns as Vitthal

After playing Lord Ram in Ramanand Sagar's Ramayan and making a place for himself in the hearts of every Ram bhakt, Arun Govil took to playing cliche roles before quitting acting altogether.

But now after a gap of almost three years, Arun Govil is back on the big screen. This time though he is making his debut in Marathi films. Going by his image, he is appearing as Lord Vitthal in Maher Majhe He Pandharpur, the shooting of which started recently in Amravati. Being made under the banner of Shraddha Pictures, it is produced by Raja N Bhaskre and Prashant Bhelande. Directed by Milind Swami, it also stars Sharad Ponkshe, Prashant Bhelande, Mugdha Shah, Bal Dhuri and Ashalata Wabgaonkar.

Hope with the blessings of Vitthal and Rukhmayi, the film hits the mark ...

Home-Bound

2006 was a good year for Urmila Kanetkar. While she debuted as the heroine in Mahesh Kothare-directed Shubhmangal Savdhan, the year-end saw her in Savalee. Even as the film and its artistes received rave reviews at the Goa Film Festival that concluded in November last, Savalee, which is a Marathi-Konkani bilingual, bagged the Best Film Award at the Screen awards recently.

In Shubhmangal Savdhan, Urmila had the august company of Ashok Saraf, Reema, Vijay Chauhan, Nirmiti Sawant and others, at the same time as she had the pleasure of working with Reema again alongwith Amruta Subhash and Pradeep Welankar in Savalee.

Now this Pune-girl will be seen in Maayka, a Hindi serial on Zee TV which stars Sudhir Pandey and Nandita Puri on (Zee TV on ). Though she is excited about the project as it will get her nationwide fame and recognition besides the chance of working for a bigger banner, Urmila is a little skeptical about her chances on big screen as that is where her dreams lie. But isn't that secondary as long as work is pleasure? And so we suggest Urmila, make hay while there is sunshine.

'Maayka'

Zee Television presents Maayka every Monday-Thursday at 8.30pm.

Maayka ..begins with Ma or mother..in other words the house that reminds you of your mother. That seemingly ordinary doorstep, next to that invisible wall that seperates a woman's present from her past.

One little step on the other side takes a 60 year old to her toddling years. It is often said that even if you leave your maayka after marraige you are always bound to it by some bitter, some sweet memories. Have you ever noticed how even the happiness in your sasural is dimmed when the maayka doesn't shine so brightly or how even the biggest problems seem easy enough to solve when you rest in the knowledge that everything is well back at home?

That is Maayka for a woman..an eternal source of strength, courage and wisdom. Maayka..that house that has its arms, heart and door always open for a woman...This story is of 3 such daughters and their family..their home.. their Maayka.

Neha Bamb with her co-stars
Neha Bamb has come up with a unique way to avoid fights on the sets of her new show Maayka. The actress, who was earlier seen in Balaji's Kaisa Ye Pyaar Hai, plays Maahi — the youngest of three sisters — on the Zee show.

Saying that she isn't really superstitious, Neha adds, "One of my friends is into gemmology, and gave me certain stones to wear to radiate positive energy. In fact, he also gave me these pyramid structures with lucky stones that keeps everyone around you in a positive state of mind. I bought a couple of these things for my co-stars and people on the set as well."

No catfights

Urmila Kanitkar (Raaji) and Arti Singh (Soni), who play Neha's sisters on the show, now carry these stones every where they go and are also making rings with these gem insets.

As for whether these stones will help prevent fights on the set, Neha says, "I don't want to get into a confrontation with anyone, especially people I work with. All of us get along well, so there isn't any major issue as of now."

When asked why she chose the show after a break of over a month, Neha says, "I didn't want to be part of a show where I am the only lead. This show is about three sisters who all have equal footage. I think the audience gets bored when they see just one protagonist on the show all the time."

Apart from television, Neha has also wrapped up a south film that's been keeping her busy. "However, I won't be able to do films for the next three to four months. Maayka is going to keep me very busy."

Vineet Raina

Tanushree Kaushal (Menka of Betiyaann) and Vineet Raina (Veer Khurana of Maayka) have been in a relationship for the past three years.

Though the couple had kept their relationship underwraps,of late, they have been spotted together at various places.

When contacted, Vineet admits Tanushree is an integral part of his life but doesn't like to talk about it much.

"Tanushree and I have a beautiful relationship going. However, I am not comfortable talking about it in public.".

Tanushree Kaushal

Serious rishtaa

However, Tanushree candidly admits her relationship with Vineet, "Yes, Vineet and I are in love. But please don't call it an affair. We are in a serious relationship. We meet every day.

We are almost like husband and wife."A source informs that Vineet often comes to the Betiyaann set. Tanushree admits, "We spend a lot of time together — on and off the sets.

We make it a point to have at least one meal together. He is a very caring and down-to-earth guy and I love him very much. We share all our problems and day-to-day happenings in our lives."So is the couple ready to exchange wedding vows?

"Of course, but let's concentrate on our work for now. I want our careers to be stable before we tie the knot. Our families know about our relationship and have no problems whatsoever," concludes Tanushree.
