What a horror!

The hoardings of Maayka

How regressive can the small screen get? After Betiyaan, Paraya Dhan, and whatchmacallit, there's another horror on its way in the form of the new TV show Maayka (and all this while you thought it was spelt 'maika').

Hoardings plastered all over town go with taglines like Naam kya badla, rishtey badle and more inane drivel. It's okay to cater to the female audience, but why don't telly folk realise that such tripe is nauseating, to say the least?

Who wants programming that reinforces female stereotypes? Are we still living in the 18th century? Please, show us some respect.

Come home to 'Maayka'

After Hours Correspondent ;

Mix a gregarious Punjabi household with some heart-tugging emotions, all centered on the age-old theme of a girl's lifelong bond with her maternal home and the result is 'Maayka—Zindagi Bhar Ka Safar' the latest show on Zee. The show has gone on air this week.

The show could well bring back the memories of 'Amaanat' (Zee), the Punjab-flavoured 1990s show that had its own bevy of daughters carving their destinies under the benign shadow of their father.

Plot pointers

Curiously, 'Maayka' casts Sudhir Pandey (the patriarch, Lahori Ram in 'Amaanat') as the father yet again. Only, this time, he will be accompanied by actor Nandita Puri who plays an indulgent mother to the couple's three daughters, all of whom have their own distinct personalities.

Sudhir speak

Sudhir, for whom the show brings back memories of 'Amaanat', however, says that his character Brij Mohan Malhotra is quite different from Lahori Ram, although the Punjabi essence recurs. "This time, I have a wife and that adds a lot of emotional depth!" he says.

Girlie group

Actor Neha Bamb, who disappeared after 'Kaisa Ye Pyar Hai', resurfaces as Maahi, the youngest daughter, a romantic and a chatterbox. The other two sisters are newcomers Aarti Singh and Urmila Kanitkar. Incidentally, Aarti, who plays Soni, has signed up for a Telugu film, and Urmila, who plays Raaji on the show, is an established Marathi soap actor. She has already won an award for her role in a Marathi film 'Savli'. "I am barely sleeping for five hours a day, and I am used to sleeping 12 hours!" groans Aarti. But she adds that the unit shares a good bonding.

Tale watch

The show will move from the impending marriage of the eldest daughter to the travails of the others, and the bonds that tie the married daughter to her parents' home. "Mine is a sweet character, and yes, there are bound to be a few teary-eyed scenes," laughs Urmila.

"It's now up to the audience to decide if 'Maayka', the channel's first daily soap of the year, touches a chord again with the viewers," says Ashwini Yardi (Zee programming head).

Hair I come!

Back to Section Stories

Sapana Patil Poojary

She's got the look! Neha Bamb
Production houses can make unreasonable demands sometimes. And who knows it better than Neha Bamb. The actress was asked to report to shoot with unwashed hair. Obviously, Neha disagreed.

Neha says, "I was not feeling well as I had a cold on the day that I auditioned for Maayka. So I went for the auditions without washing my hair that day. As my role in Maayka is that of a girl who is outspoken and doesn't bother much about her looks, they wanted me to keep my unkempt look in the serial as well. But how could I not wash my hair throughout the serial to maintain that unwashed look?"

Creative head Anjana Sood says, "We were considering that Neha should keep long loose hair. But we finally settled on plaited hair to suit her character."

Neha gets stoned!

Neha Bamb with her co-stars
Neha Bamb has come up with a unique way to avoid fights on the sets of her new show Maayka. The actress, who was earlier seen in Balaji's Kaisa Ye Pyaar Hai, plays Maahi — the youngest of three sisters — on the Zee show.

Saying that she isn't really superstitious, Neha adds, "One of my friends is into gemmology, and gave me certain stones to wear to radiate positive energy. In fact, he also gave me these pyramid structures with lucky stones that keeps everyone around you in a positive state of mind. I bought a couple of these things for my co-stars and people on the set as well."

No catfights

Urmila Kanitkar (Raaji) and Arti Singh (Soni), who play Neha's sisters on the show, now carry these stones every where they go and are also making rings with these gem insets.

As for whether these stones will help prevent fights on the set, Neha says, "I don't want to get into a confrontation with anyone, especially people I work with. All of us get along well, so there isn't any major issue as of now."

When asked why she chose the show after a break of over a month, Neha says, "I didn't want to be part of a show where I am the only lead. This show is about three sisters who all have equal footage. I think the audience gets bored when they see just one protagonist on the show all the time."

Apart from television, Neha has also wrapped up a south film that's been keeping her busy. "However, I won't be able to do films for the next three to four months. Maayka is going to keep me very busy."
