Scene 15: From Dawn to Dusk
Prithvi woke up just before dawn. He realized that he was still holding on to Damini. He didn't want to let go off her warmth. He continued snuggling upto her. A few minutes later, Damini stirred. She tried to get up and found herself trapped by Prithvi's arm. She turned around to see Prithvi's face a few inches away sleeping. She blushed slightly and with a small smile playing on her lips, she tried to pry herself out of his grip. Surprisingly, it was lot tougher than she imagined. After a few seconds of struggling to get his hand off her waist, she finally succeeded. "How can someone be that strong even when he is asleep?" she wondered exiting the room. Meanwhile, Prithvi got up and propped himself up on the bed, grinning.
It was still dawn. The sky was slowly turning a beautiful shade of red on the horizon. Damini settled in the favorite corner of the garden, with a shawl covering her shoulders and a cup of piping hot tea in her hands. Damini was always an early riser. It was her "me-time" before things got crazy. Prithvi, meanwhile, had been searching for his Damini. He wandered around a bit until he caught a glimpse of her sitting on the bench. He stood staring at her face lit up by the early morning light. Just then Damini turned and saw Prithvi staring. She gave him one of her dazzling smiles, which Prithvi always loved. "Good Morning", Damini said cheerfully. Prithvi smiled and wished her back. He just stood there until Damini nodded to him to join her on the bench.
There they sat, husband and wife, on the bench, enjoying the sunrise and each other's company as well. "This is my most favorite place in the garden", Damini said. "Why is that?" Prithvi enquired softly. "I can see the entire valley as well as the mountains from here. The beauty of this place always fascinated me. Everything seems so much in harmony..", Damini suddenly stopped when she saw Prithvi smiling. "What??" she asked.. " Nothing", Prithvi shook his head slightl,."you were saying?".. Damini frowned a bit but still continued ", You know even this place in the garden is the best, see, the roses up there give off perfect scent in harmony with the jasmines here.. and the wet earth aroma mixes perfectly with the flower scents.."
Prithvi was listening in admiration.. This was the first time he had heard Damini talk so passionately about something other than work or horses. "Don't you think, I am right?", Damini looked at him.."Yes, you are..It is amazing how we tend to forget to appreciate what we already have..", Prithvi concurred. Then Prithvi continued talking about his favourite place in Manali, with such passion that Damini wished she could see that. By now, the sun had started peeking out through the fog, filling up the valley with light, that Prithvi and Damini sat quietly for a few minutes taking in the beauty. They had finished their tea by now.
A cool breeze sent slight shivers down Damini's spine. She held on her shawl, even more. Prithvi noticed that and asked her "Are you cold, Damini?". Damini just shook her head. "No I am okey... it is just a little chilly..I probably need to get another cup of hot tea to warm me up", she replied picking up her empty cup. Suddenly Prithvi moved closer to her and looked at her, inches away from her face, and said " I know another way of keeping you warm, if you let me".. Before Damini could react, he took the empty cup from her hand and made his way to the house grinning, leaving behind a blushing Damini.
It was 11 am by the time; every1 was up in the house. Elaji woke up to find a sleeping Rosh next to her. She smiled seeing her.. She was not a least bit surprised to find her. Brunch in the garden saw Sameer teasing Rosh relentlessly.. Avni and Varun couldn't make him stop. Finally Damini yelled at him to stop. Whether she was irritated at him just for teasing Rosh or was there some other reason, wondered Prithvi grinning, recollecting last night events in the bedroom.
After a nice long brunch, the gang decided to go for a walk around the farm-house. Elaji decided wisely to use the quiet time to catch up on her book. The weather was perfect for a walk. The air was cool, with the sun peeping in and out of the clouds. Rosh and Sameer tried to convince every1 to play antakshari. Only Prithvi stoutly refused. He was not going to make a fool of himself in front of them, especially Damini.
Undeterred, Rosh and Sameer started the game.. Avni and Varun also joined in whole heartedly.. the group wound their way through narrow trails surrounding their farm. Their singing, sometimes scaring off chipmunks, was getting louder and louder. Damini and Prithvi were enjoying the surroundings as well as their siblings antics. They came up on a small stream..Rosh was undecided as to how she would cross it, Varun immediately helped her balance on the rocks, and held her hand till she crossed safely. Sameer went a step ahead. He carried a blushing Avni in his arms across the stream.
Prithvi glanced at Damini, and raised an eyebrow. Before he could say or do something, Damini raised her hand and said " No worries, I can handle it. " And she went, gingerly, stepping on the stones. Prithvi followed her from behind, ready as ever to catch her if she fell, in fact he was secretly hoping that she would. But Prithvi had no such luck. Damini crossed the stream and then turned around and gave a victorious smirk to Prithvi. Prithvi could only roll his eyes and pout a bit.
The singing four and the silent two continued on their way. Rosh would look at her muddied shoes, and complain. But then she was all ok with it, when Damini and Avni assured her that now she can buy new shoes. The antakshari continued until Sameer decided to pull his Bhaiyya into it. They had stopped at "Ma". "Bhaiyya, you have to sing.. Come on..", Sameer started. "Yes, Jeej, you have to...", now Avni and Rosh supported Sameer.. Varun was just smiling. He wasn't sure how Prithvi would react, so he was being safe.
"Damini Di, ask Jeej to sing...puhleeeezz", Rosh now whined to Damini.. Damini was enjoying Prithvi's discomfort. "Its ok Rosh.. what can one do if he can't sing", she said with a twinkle in her eye. Prithvi pursed his lips and looked at Damini. "That is not the reason,, ", he said.." O Really, then why don't you prove me wrong", Damini said laughing looking at Prithvi's annoyed face. She turned and started walking ahead when suddenly she heard
Main to jantar se hi darta hoon
Bas pyaar ka mantra karta hoon
In Chakkar mein na padta hoon
Haaye Rabba yeh kya ho gaya
Kya pyaar kiya kambakkhat ishq
Main to haar gaya kambakkhat ishq
Mujhe maaar gaya kambakkhat ishq
Haaye rabba yeh kya ho gaya
Damini turned around in shock and saw a smiling Prithvi singing. The others were just gaping at him with their jaws wide open. Prithvi grinned seeing their reactions and stopped singing. "Now are you all happy? Shall we return back to the house? It looks like it will rain", Prithvi said pointing towards the sky. "Wow Jeej, you sing amazingly well... way better than Sameer Jeej", Rosh said.."Heyyyy, what do you mean? Better than me.. mayb almost as good as me", Sameer protested. Avni pushed Sameer slightly. "Prithvi Jeej, you have a fabulous voice.. Isn't it, Di", she said turning towards her sister. Damini, who was still staring at Prithvi, could only say " Huh.. yea whatever".. Prithvi grinned and started marshaling his troops back to the house.
The group had barely made it back to the house when it started raining. Elaji greeted the group warmly and was listening to all that had happened or at least trying to make some sense out of Rosh's continuous yapping. When she heard about Prithvi's singing, she smiled at him. Prithvi blushed slightly and pretended to read the newspaper.
"Now what should we do?", Sameer as usual said taking charge. Avni said softly, "Mayb we should watch a movie?" Sameer smiled sweetly at his wife "Of course, my dear.. which movie should we watch?" How about "transformers"?
"Ewww.. no science fiction", Rosh whined. "I have a nice movie. We should all watch that", Rosh continued. "Its called the Notebook". Sameer rolled his eyes " I am not watching some sappy movie", he declared. "But Sameer Jeej, Goldie said it is a nice movie and that I should definitely watch it", Rosh whined further. "Goldie.. Goldie... Lord no.. then we will not watch it.. ", Sameer groaned. Roshni looked around the room for support. ELaji smartly took herself out of the picture by going to her room to take a nap. Avni supported Roshni. "Let us watch the movie Roshni wants. It will be way more soothing than the science fiction. that other movie might not be good for the baby, Sameer"." Awww.. now how can I say no.. okey.. the sappy pix it is", Sameer said resignedly.
Damini and Prithvi didn't have a choice anymore. That is how the entire evening continued, with Sameer consoling a sobbing Avni, Varun consoling a crying Roshni and Damini and Prithvi laughing at them.
But by dinnertime, Damini was almost losing control. The incessant bantering and chatting of Sameer and Roshni was driving her crazy. She also had successfully restrained her urge to gag both of them. "Damini Beta, there is a treat for you", Elaji suddenly said after dinner looking at her frowing eldest daughter. Damini looked up to her mom. "Guess, what is for dessert?", Elaji said smiling. Damini frowned a bit and then suddenly yelled " Mama, don't tell me.. is it molten fudge chocolate cake???"
Elaji nodded laughing.. "Awesome... I love you Mama", Damini squealed with laughter. That was her most favorite dessert. She loved her molten chocolate. Eagerly she took the plate and went outside. She wanted to enjoy her treat in peace. Thankfully, the rain had stopped some time ago.
She settled on the bench, sitting cross-legged, digging her spoon in the gooey cake and taking a bite. "Ahh.. heaven", she said softly as the warm chocolate delighted her senses. Suddenly she heard a rustle behind her. She turned back to see Prithvi standing behind her. She smiled slightly at him and then continued taking another bite of her dessert. Prithvi needed no invitation this time. He sat down next to her . They sat in silence for sometime, observing the beautiful scenery around them. The valley was twinkling with the lights; the sky was glowing in the twilight.
" You sing well", Damini suddenly said breaking the silence. Prithvi looked at her with a naughty grin. He looked adorable to Damini when he did that. Damini blushed slightly and put her plate on the ledge next to her. She smiled and said, " I didn't know that you sang ". Prithvi gave a small laugh " There are many things you don't know about me, Damini", he said looking into her eyes. The intense stare flustered Damini and her hands searched around for her plate.
In her confusion, she knocked off the spoon on her plate, and the gooey fudge splashed all over her face.." Damn it..", she screamed, glaring at the upturned spoon. She started to wipe off the chocolate mess on her face irritated, getting angry that her favorite dessert was on her face rather than in her mouth. Prithvi was still staring at her.
Instinctively, he moved closer to her and touched her face with his fingers to help her wipe the mess. Damini looked upto him at his touch. Seeing her face lit by the twilight, Prithvi couldn't help himself. He cupped her face in his palms and moved closer. Damini was now sitting still and she continued staring dazedly. Prithvi leaned in and started gently caressing her cheeks with his lips, eating off the chocolate. Damini closed her eyes. Prithvi continued his trail of kisses along the cheek, her forehead, her chin. Damini was completely lost in those wonderful sensations. After a few moments, Prithvi looked up surveying his handiwork. Damini still had her eyes closed. He smiled slightly looking at her face. He saw few more bits of chocolate close to her ear, and leaned in to take care of those as well..
"Jeeejjjjjjjjj", a faint voice called out from the house.. Prithvi looked up slightly, hoping against hope that Rosh was calling out for Sameer and not him. Damini had still not heard anything. Just then, Prithvi noticed the last bit of chocolate tantalizing close to her lips. How can he leave something half 'done. He leaned in again, gently caressing her lips with his. Damini nearly swooned with pleasure. He continued for a few more moments.. until he heard the dreaded words "Prithviiiii Jeejjjjjjjjjjj". He groaned inwardly. He loved Rosh, but that girl needs to stop interrupting.. By now, Damini had heard Rosh as well.. She disengaged herself somewhat from the kiss with great difficulty. Prithvi looked at her, a slight smile playing on his lips..
Then he got up and started for the house, grinning and mumbling, "That was very tasty".Damini still sat glued to the bench,, recovering and then suddenly groaning to herself seeing her empty plate " Dammit, he finished my chocolate"..
